People criticize Nutting as being a terrible owner. However, if you consider that his main goal as a businessman is turning a profit, he’s doing a great job. I believe that the baseball players Union is by far the strongest of all sport unions - with that being the case, why hasn’t the union campaigned harder for a salary floor for teams?
Jason Mackey
12:57
I don't think they would get a floor without a cap, and they definitely don't want a cap.

Goodwin is NOT young - he's 30. He is NOT tradable - he just signed a minor league deal meaning anyone could have had him for the minimum and PASSED. Every AB steals development time from Alford. His signing isn't team-building - he won't be here next year. If he is a back-up, fine. Anything else is a waste of reps for younger players.

The guy hit 17 home runs in 2019 and was TRADED last year. Yes, he stunk with the Reds. But do you really think that, if he has a strong start, someone wouldn't be interested? We can disagree on philosophy here, but you saying he would be not tradable ... you don't know that, and you can't predict that.

Are we to the point with Frazier that he could be traded toward the end of spring training after teams have a chance to see what their internal candidates look like and/or injuries occur?  Seems like where the value would be outside of midseason.

We're at the point where we've always been with Frazier -- he can be traded at any time. Tough situation for him, but I can only feel so bad for someone making more than $4 million to play baseball. He'll be fine.

If no Major League Baseball due to work stoppage, will minor leagues play ( assuming COVID under control)?
Jason Mackey

Interesting question. Technically, no. Those teams signed Professional Development Licenses with Major League Baseball, and they would be theoretically crossing the picket line by affording an opportunity for players to do the same, no? I don't know how that would be viewed. I also don't think it would happen.

I always think of a “Pirates Mt. Rushmore” The first three are probably fairly obvious... Clemente, Stargell, Wagner. If you agree with those three (or even if you don’t) what would yours look like? Who would your fourth be?
Jason Mackey

Would probably have a tough time not including Paul Waner, but it's also tough to think of a Mt. Rushmore for the Pirates without Maz on it. Better question, the Mt. Rushmore of the Pirates post-1990? Bonds, Cutch, Kendall and ... ? I don't know. Giles? Van Slyke? Drabek? Burnett?

What do you think you get for 2 good months of Goodwin after every team passed on him when he was available for nothing? A low-grade A-ball pitcher? The prospect (Alford) is here NOW. He is 26. The time to determine if he is useful is NOW.

Well, the Angels got Packy Naughton and Jose Salvador from the Reds last summer. I would be fine with that sort of return for Goodwin in 2021. I think the Pirates would, too.

Who will be the announcers and color guys this year?
Jason Mackey

Not sure yet. Still TBD.

Ralph Kiner

Can't agree, Mark.

Who do you see as being "leaders" among the players?
Jason Mackey

I think Stallings will be one. Maybe Brault because he's outspoke and goofy. Perhaps Cole Tucker, Frazier if he's here, Goodwin if he produces. Hayes will have respect from everyone, but he's quiet and learning his way still. That's a lot to ask.

How about the DH, Jason?  Are you against it in the NL?
Jason Mackey

I've made my peace with it. It's gonna change in 2022. What are we clinging to now?

Jason, say hi to Brian.  I've noticed that I've never seen the two of you in the same room together.  If Yasiel Puig were to take on the '27 Yankees by himself, clearly he would win.  My question is, if you took off a foot of height, at what point do the Yankees win?  A 5 foot Puig?  4 Foot?  3?
Jason Mackey
1:11
Ha. I will. Brian's a good man. There's no way Yasiel Puig loses anything. Ever.

I completely understand the frustration of many fans.  I also am very aware of how painful it has been since 1992, but I am glad that they have picked a direction and gone full rebuilt.  I think that is the best way for them to build a legitimate team to complete.
Jason Mackey
1:11
It's the only way. And if they make smart decisions with this rebuild, it can happen. If they make dumb ones, it won't.

OK, folks. That will do it for this week. Thanks so much for participating. Talk to yinz again next week.
