A fair thought, Mr. Costanza. Now, it is in incumbent on the Pirates to do a smart deal for them. These things take time. But I do agree that if you want the player (they say they do) and he's not asking for an insane amount of money (he's not) ... then let's just do this because fans deserve it.

Does Bae crack camp as Super Util?
Jason Mackey
12:47
I think so, yes.
KP
12:47
Who do you think is on their last chance, either in spring training or this season?
Jason Mackey
12:48
Umm ... maybe one of the catchers, Plawecki or Heineman? Andujar? Underwood Jr.? Lot of young outfielders (Swaggerty, Mitchell, CSN) who could fall into that category, too.

Would Reynolds possibly entertain a 6-year deal starting in '24 (since he already signed a contract for this year) at a higher AAV than what they previously offered? That could be some middle ground if he wanted 8 and they offered 6
Jason Mackey
12:49
Not sure. I've asked that same question and haven't gotten a straight answer. My hunch: yes ... provided the total dollars went up enough. Like six years at Reynolds' originally desired rate. Do that or eight at the Pirates' number. Maybe seven at the midpoint of those two figures.

What does brubaker need to do to take a step forward?  he has the strikeouts and a relative lack of walks necessary to be good, but has had issues with the longball.  Any changes to address that issue?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Yup. Better curveball and changeup. That's what I want to see from him. He reworked his curveball grip. Believe he tweaked his change, too. Sinker-slider like he is, he really needs something else to keep guys honest. Changeup would be huge.

Do you think Cutch would be good in the #2 spot in the order?
Jason Mackey
12:51
I contemplate that. Could be, yes. When I listed my Opening Day lineup, that was definitely something I considered. I do side with Shelton on this: We make waaaaay too much out of the lineup. It changes all the damn time.

One way or another, the team needs to find a CF of the future (Reynolds will either be gone or age out of the position in the next yr or two, id think).  Would you put your money on Bae, Swaggerty, Suwinski, or Triolo (or someone else in the system!) being that player, or is the "cf of the future" not in the org today?
Jason Mackey
12:52
Umm ... I don't know if I need a Capital-C Center Fielder. I'd like a good outfielder. Could be Jack, Could be Bae. I don't think it'll be Swaggerty. Could be Cruz. They could rotate a lot.  I do think the majority of their future outfielders are in the organization.

did you ever hear any actual reynolds trade offers off the record?
Jason Mackey
12:52
No. But that's not uncommon.

Not really a question I just wanna say thanks for the great coverage during spring training. Also It makes me really excited that the whole tune of the Bryan Reynolds situation has changed. If they get it done it will turn a lot of head around here.
Jason Mackey
12:52
Thanks, Canyon. Appreciate you following along.

Have you seen much of Dauri Moreta yet? He was absolutely lights-out outside of 2 blow-up outings last year and his stuff is nasty. I think he should be in the bullpen from day 1
Jason Mackey
12:53
I watched him throw yesterday and came away with the same impression. His slider is tremendous, but he's also wild. I expect him to start in Triple-A. You'll see him at some point, but I don't think he breaks camp with the big club.

Hey Jason can you look into Tyr issue of the expired contract between stub hub and mlb? We can't list our tix?
Jason Mackey
12:54
I have no idea what you're talking about. Email me: jmackey@post-gazette.com.

Jason, do you think that there is any chance that Shelton might move guys around to different positions to give guys looks like Joe Maddon did putting Bryant in the OF or Schwarber at different positions?  Given the guys on the horizon at C and the middle infield, it would be good to see how versatile certain guys might be.
Jason Mackey
12:54
Bill, have you been following the Pirates under Shelton? Just kidding. But, yeah, I expect him to do this. He does it like changing his socks.
Justin
12:54
Do you know if the pirates already have scouts at, say, LSU and Tennessee games this early in the year?
Jason Mackey
12:54
I would imagine so, yes.

Hey Jason, thanks for the chats.  I’m curious if you know the current health status of Parker.  Also, what are his HOF chances?  Thank you.
Jason Mackey
12:56
I do not. Good reminder to check. Sadly, probably not very good. And that's ridiculous. Should've been in a long time ago. Watch: The Hall and those responsible for allowing him in won't come to their senses until its too late for the Cobra to actually enjoy it.
OK, folks. Gotta head out here for the start of this one. Thanks so much for chatting. Let's do this again next week!
