You are right that I've gotten this/these a lot. There's certainly a chance. But I don't know how good it is. Roansy is out of options. Jared Jones isn't on the 40. People won't like it, but wouldn't surprise me if the Pirates slow-played this and gave someone else a chance.
Steven
11:27
Any chance at a Bednar extension before the season, or most likely not and maybe they get something done after the season if he continues to be dominant?
Cullen
11:29
What is Jared Jones ceiling/floor as a pitcher?
Jason Mackey
11:29
This is for the Bednar question: There's certainly a chance. I don't think they wanna lose Bednar, obviously. But they've also been leaning on the years of control.
11:30
Floor would be, what logically, Triple-A? And he doesn't advance because he gets hit and/or throws strikes? Ceiling, I think he can be really, really good. How else to think about someone who throws 98-100 mph with confidence and four legitimate pitches?

So, Edward Cabrera?
Jason Mackey
11:30
Yeah, crazy. Seemed close, then Braxton Garrett gets hurt, price goes up, doesn't work. I wish they would have done more to address the starting rotation.

Hi Jason.  After Mitch, in what order will the rotation be filled out to start the year?
Jason Mackey
11:31
Popular topic this week ... would go probably Gonzales, Perez, Roansy ... then you've got choices Priester, Ortiz, Jones, Falter, Anderson, Lauer, Fleming. A lot to determine.
Cullen

What are some of the considerations that go into the decision making on how quickly to move prospects? Seems like we have some guys like Termarr, Solometo, Jones, etc on the fast track and are way ahead of the typical age for the level. Then international prospects seem to be slow walked. Do you agree with how aggressively they are challenging these guys? Seems to be completely different vs the Huntington era of needing X at bats at each level.
Jason Mackey
11:38
I don't think it's meeting X at-bats or X innings. I think it's about how quickly does someone take coaching and translate it onto the field? How quickly can they adjust? What's their aptitude for learning? How does their preparation look? ... I think the international thing is more because of the age where they start, like 16 or so. They just have more to learn when it comes to simple stuff like the language, culture, life as a pro, etc.

I see Peguero as the 2B, Nick in minors. The bench as Triolo, Bae and Joe. Which leaves one of Oliveras and Palacios as the RF starter. In this scenario, only one of Olivares and Palacios can make the team, the other headed to DFA limbo as both are out of options. Who do you think will win this RF battle?  (No, I'm not betting money it will shake out this way.)
Jason Mackey
11:39
I would be surprised if they DFA'd Olivares. Dude has a 109 OPS+ over the past two seasons. He hasn't done much in spring, but so what? I wouldn't have Triolo on my bench. Not sure what Bae has done to earn a regular job. They don't have to decide now, thankfully.

Jason, based on results so far who is your 5-man rotation now and potentially how do you see if actually working out.
Jason Mackey
11:40
Probably gonna skip this one, guys. Hate doing that. But I've answered it a bunch, and we only have limited time today.
Steven
11:40
For the die-hard fans, how should we view this upcoming season? Should we be expecting a potential playoff berth? Watching for continued development of the young guys? What are some things to watch and keep an eye on this season?
Jason Mackey
11:41
Steven, you absolutely have asked me more questions today than my wife. ... I would expect over .500 and flirting with a playoff spot. Offense should be better with Cruz back and Hayes in a much improved spot. Think Jack Suwinski is gonna be a big part of it. Bullpen should be solid. Worry about the rotation depth.
PhillyJake
11:41
Assuming neither gets hurt, is it 100% that Marco and Martin are both in the starting rotation? Is it 100% that both are on the 26 man roster?
Jason Mackey
11:41
Yes.

Best GD keyboardist ever - Pig or Pig? And kudos to Ms. Mackey for her great health related articles.
Jason Mackey
11:42
Ha. I do love me some Pigpen. I wonder which direction the Dead would have gone had he not died. I will let Abster know. Thank you for that.

11:42
I'd bet on Preister being a starter, either in the majors or Indy. Not in the pen in the majors.
Jason Mackey
11:42
I agree with you. Though I think they could use a bullpen spot as a piggyback starter. Two sheltered starts in the same game.

Hi Jason,  I know the Pirates won't do it but what would Hayes bring back in a trade?
Jason Mackey
11:43
Oh, come on. No, they're not doing that. Would imagine at this point, he would bring a nice return. But it ain't happening.

If Joe is going to be in a platoon with Tellez at 1B, where does that leave Olivares and Palacios? Platoon in RF? Does Olivares get some play in CF? ZiPS like Olivares a bit, projects .270/.326.432 from him. Do you think Joe playing in CF is anything more than getting him reps in camp?
Jason Mackey
11:44
Could be. This is one of those things that's still TBD. Olivares had an .857 OPS against lefties last year. Would imagine they're gonna have him in there against LHP. Joe in CF is probably only getting reps, but it may not hurt. I didn't think Joe was a liability, don't know about you. If there's a lefty, it might make sense to rest Jack and stack righties.

Hi Jason... I'm making loud noises with my bat, pitchers are saying I'm doing a good job catching them, and I broke a car windshield during BP. Is this really a "competition" for the catcher's job or is that just the front office trying to motivate me?
Jason Mackey
11:45
I'm not sure. But if it was a motivational thing, my hat is off. Nice work.

First, I was saddened to hear the passing of Ed Ott. I'm old enough, just barely, to remember the 1979 team. Ed Ott was one of my favorite players from that team. Now, with respect to David Bednar's injury, is it me or are the Pirates being coy with the severity? If he starts the year on the injured list, does Chapman become the closer, or would it be more matchup driven?
Jason Mackey
11:46
I don't think they're being coy. They're being cautious. Pretty sure Bednar threw today. Need to check after with Shelton. Not worried about this in the least.

Is your impression that Luis Ortiz has looked downright good and that Roansy is a little more iffy?  And has Falter looked bad?
Jason Mackey
11:47
Haven't been impressed with Falter. Don't totally agree with your assessment on the other two. Have liked both. I like that Ro's velocity has returned. Ortiz still feels a start away from 5 earned and 6 walks. I wanna see more out of both.

Can you explain the various timetables involved in potentially calling up Skenes. How long to preserve an extra year, when/what is Super 2 etc. and when those potential opportunities/dates for calling him up might be? Complex question now that you are a big time columnist instead of a lowly beat writer :)
Jason Mackey
11:48
Oh, gosh. Yeah, this could be long. Let's try. Year of control: 15 days. Would be long enough to stop him from earning a full year of service time. (Trying to stay out of the weeds here.) ... Super-2 means the top 22% of service time accrued this season. We don't know the exact cutoff, but it's around mid-June. There estimates done based on service time earning, trends, etc. Super-2 means players can go through arbitration four teams versus three; they get there a year earlier than they otherwise would because of service time accumulated. That make sense?

Who wins the second base and RF jobs?
Jason Mackey
11:49
I think Triolo wins something. Let's start with that. Right now, same time, I think Peguero has been good enough that he would be difficult to turn away. He plays 2B. That means you'd probably have to get creative with Triolo. Also in RF, we need a larger sample size. Palacios just returned. Cutch hasn't done much. Olivares has slumped, etc.
Steven
11:50
If Termarr destroys AA, could you see him be a September call up? I mean he was drafted the same year as Jackson Holliday and some Os fans think he’s going to be on the major league roster early this season and be a mainstay. I know, two different players but Termarr looks to be for real.
Jason Mackey
11:50
I could maybe see it. Certainly hasn't looked out of place this year. But where? If things go well for the Pirates, Peguero, Triolo or someone should have 2B fairly locked down.
Justin
11:50
How do you think playing time for Hank is going to map out?   3-4 games at C per week, 1-2 at DH (Cutch rests or chips in at RF), 1-2 resting?  Seems like the RF days are over, given the lack of time there this spring.
