Very possibly, John. They don't have a lot of depth. I'm iffy on their pitching and power. Their bullpen has more question marks than steady contributors. The good thing is I think they will be interesting this year. A lot of guys making their MLB debuts. Maybe they surprise. But, yeah, challenging for the worst record wouldn't surprise me.
They stink
12:54
Even if they only play 120 games, the Pirates still lose 100+. Agreed ?
Jason Mackey
12:54
You really think they're gonna go 20-100? I don't see how they win 20. ... Nah, I'm just kidding. It's not gonna be that bad!

Why is there so little interest in MLB to protect small-market teams? Is it a decision at the top that that's where they make their money or is it that small-market teams are raking in cash regardless of whether they win, so the small-market teams are content with that?

Good point, 1960. I think it's more the type of thing where, the more money you have, the greater influence you have. And I don't even know if that's wrong. But someone, or a group of people, should have the sense to realize that the best thing for the group is to put some rules in place like a cap and floor. But I don't see it happening.

Jason, thanks for the chats, you do the best job of any of the PPG staff of answering any and all questions thoroughly!  Also we as subscribers need some spring training as we are off our game!  Only a handful of sign Cutch and no "Nutting is cheap", "Nutting needs to sell the team", "fire everyone" or "I am not paying money to watch this" questions/statements.  We''ll do better once the games start!

Haha. Thanks, Wayward. I really do like these. And yinz are the reason I get to do what I do for a living. I always try to appreciate and remember that. ... Also, it's spring training for everyone, me included.

I'm fully supportive of a cap and floor system. But that's going to require the owners to open their books. And I've seen no indication that any of these owners are willing to divulge their true financial picture to the players. Call me nuts, but I think if the owners would come clean the players might actually go along with a capo and floor.

You could do a cap-and-floor system without a total opening of books. I know what you're saying -- and you're right. No way they'll open 'em if they don't have to. But I don't think that's the issue preventing a cap and floor.
Why ?
1:02
Why are the local government leaders so in love with the owner that they refuse to demand he open his books ? He gets tax money. I guarantee there are financial misdeeds occurring. Don't boycott. Call your State Reps and demand they make him accountable. Hell force him to sit in front of State government hearing and answer questions

What power would local government leaders have over Major League Baseball? Believe me, I wanna see the Pirates open their books. I wanna see all teams open their books. But as Peduto told me a couple years ago, they have no legal authority to do anything about it: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2019/10/17/bill-peduto-pit...

And again, I'm not defending Nutting or the Pirates. By all means, call away, take up government officials' attendance over baseball spending, doesn't affect me. But it's not like Ed Gainey is gonna walk over to PNC Park and be like, "OK, Bob. People are pissed. Gotta show 'em."
Why ?
1:05
He gets taxpayer money. He should be required to open them
Jason Mackey

I agree he/they should be required. But should be required and having a legal mechanism to do something are different. I think it's in the article, but Peduto/Gainey can't just demand Giant Eagle open its books because they don't like how much they're charging for milk. That's not how government works. Or shouldn't work.

OK, folks. That's gonna do it for this week. Have a Thursday story to work on and a lockout to monitor. I may have to pack and fly to Florida for a month tomorrow, which is nuts. But in any case, thanks so much for doing this, as always. Talk to you next week from ... well, somewhere.
