Again, I want to semi apologize for the tone of my first post. It's not directed at you at all. I feel like I should be glad I can watch baseball again but I'm actually trying to think of other ways to fill up my summer evenings because I just don't want to watch yet another season of loss after loss when we could be given something better while we're waiting for the kids to fix it all.
Jason Mackey
12:26
I deal with people who yell at me because they're mad about the Pirates and want to see good baseball before they die on a daily basis. Usually several per day. It's cool.

So now that he has sold the Pirates and the ever dwindling fanbase up the river like the rat he is by voting for the CBA, is Bob Nutting the most evil man in Pittsburgh now or the most man in Pittsburgh ever ?
Jason Mackey
12:27
Bob Nutting sold his fan base? I'm gonna need to look into that. Hopefully he got something good for those fine Yinzers.
Justin

Ben Gamel's line as a Pirate last yr was .255/.352/.399.  Do you expect better, worse or pretty much the same this yr?
Jason Mackey
12:28
I would say about the same, maybe a little better. Believe he kinda slumped toward the end. But I see Gamel as someone who's completely serviceable -- a third on a bad team, a fourth on a good one. Would have no issue if that's what his line ended up looking like.

Hi Jason!
Jason Mackey

Hi Hunter.

I read that Volgelbach got a club option for a second year. When was the last time the pirates gave a option and is this going to be more common as the young core comes up?
Jason Mackey
12:29
I wouldn't read too much into the context surrounding his option. Gives him some more security. I think it would make sense for the Pirates if he winds up becoming a productive leader or something of that type.
How ?
12:29
How does Ben Cherrington keep a straight face and not laugh out loud when he speaks of "Bob Nutting being committed to the Pirates and loving Pittsburgh" ? I guess if you repeat a lie often enough you almost believe it ?
Jason Mackey
12:30
I think Cherington was in a very tough spot. I mean, what is he gonna say? But if we don't ask, it's immediately, "How do you not ask?" Now, I do think Nutting has made a lot of changes to their development, how they operate, coaching, tech, etc. Enough? Time will tell. And I wish he would spend more on major league players. Cherington also isn't going to publicly trash his boss.

How excited should I be to watch Mitch Keller this year?
Jason Mackey
12:31
Wanna see Mitch pitch more in games, obviously, but I've been very encouraged by his practice work and attitude thus far. Seems like he matured a lot this offseason. And I'm happy for him. He's a really, really good kid who I think has put way too much pressure on himself. Seems he's relaxed some.

Good afternoon Jason how has Bednar and everyone looked can’t wait for the season to start soon let’s go Bucs
Jason Mackey
12:32
Good afternoon, Ryan. I missed Bednar throw yesterday because I was watching Mitch and Peters on the main field. Catch and long toss has been fine, but that doesn't actually tell me anything. Of the concerns I have about the Pirates, believe me when I tell you that Bednar is not one.
12:35
OK, folks. Will be quick here because clubhouse opens at 12:45.
Jack
12:35
Just want it to put it out there for all Pirates fans upset about the last few years and are sick of the process to read the book "Astroball."
Jason Mackey
12:36
Thanks, Jack. I have that at home. Need to actually read it.
Jack
12:37
I know he's not loved by most Pirates fans but how would Pujols fit in with the Buccos this year? Good clubhouse present, not very expensive, and can dominate lefties, etc.
Jason Mackey
12:37
I don't see that happening, Jack. Talk about redundant skill sets with Yoshi, Vogelbach ...
Justin
12:37
When all of the beat writers tweet that sources say the team signed someone within 30 seconds of each other such as yesterday when Hembree signed, what is going on in the background?   Does the same anonymous source send out a mass group text?  Does the anonymous source send out individual texts to the writers?  Do all of the writers kind of think this dynamic where they all tweet the same thing at the same time is funny/silly in a way?  I really truly don't mean this in any mean spirited way.  It's legit curiosity about the reporting end of things.
Jason Mackey
12:38
Yes. It's not uncommon for someone privy to details to let writers know something -- I.e. contract details. It's about thinking anything is funny -- although it is -- but just about us doing our jobs. It's almost sadly reflexive to get a text or a piece of news and tweet about it.
John
12:38
My take on it is that Nutting should have voted no. At least show the fans here that things need changed in Baseball no matter how cosmetic that vote would have looked. I
Jason Mackey
12:39
I don't think you're wrong, John. At least then you can look your fans in the face and say, "Look, I let it be known where I stand. I can't help what the other 29 do."
John
12:39
(cont) I don't think Bob Nutting has ever sabre-rattled anytime at a Baseball League meeting.
Jason Mackey
12:40
Are you implying that Bob Nutting should show up to meetings swinging a sword like an actual Pirate? Because that's an unbelievably hilarious visual.
Forlorn Hope
12:40
I have the Pirates with 130 losses this year. Too low ?
Jason Mackey
12:41
Too high. (Whaddya mean too high? ... Who gives a shit? It's gone.)
Jack
12:41
Next year the Pirates make the playoffs prediction?
Jason Mackey
12:41
2024.
Joe Palooka
12:41
Ugh. I thought I'd never ask this question - Who you think is DHing for the Pirates this year Jason?
Jason Mackey
12:41
Vogelbach to start but rotating with Yoshi.
Jack
12:41
What level will Henry Davis reach this year?
Jason Mackey
12:42
I think he will get to Class AAA. Quick High-A, bulk Class AA, late-season promotion.
Dr Evil
12:42
Does Bob Nutting have an evil lair and if he does have you ever been there ?
Jason Mackey
12:42
I don't know. But I have not seen it.

Can you tell us about a catcher in low A I believe who is said to be a strong hitter so far? His name escapes me...
Jason Mackey
12:43
Guessing you mean Endy Rodriguez? Top-10 kid. Real fun personality. Gonna bounce around and play some other positions. Still growing into his body but has a bunch of power and makes solid contact. Like him a lot.

I do not understand, so please enlighten me, why won’t the Pirates spend, say $100+ million on payroll NOW? They have ~$60+ million to spend to get to a $100 million payroll. Seems to me they could make bets on a core group NOW and sign them for serious money?  For example, similar to the Penguins (Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Fleury for a while) locking up a core group THIS YEAR? How about Reynolds, Hayes, and a couple of proven, big name free agent position player(s) and a pitcher(s) signing NOW? Show fans they are serious about competing NOW rather than in a few years if/when MAYBE enough of the so-called prospects actually sniff the big-league roster? I get it that free agents have to WANT to come and Reynolds, Hayes, etc. have to WANT to sign here. But seriously, in real life and sports, money talks and BS walks.
