What's the upside in releasing him? You're already paying him. Deal is guaranteed. I suppose they could, but I doubt they will.
Austin
12:35
Who are the final two rotation spots going to go to? (Sorry you’re probably going to get this question a dozen times.)
Jason Mackey
12:35
One has to be going to Jones -- and, yes. Have gotten it a bunch. Other ... not sure. Anderson maybe, Ortiz maybe ... not Ro, not Falter, doubt Priester.
Penny Kickett
12:35
Jason, quick FYI, I just put my former 'burgh casa on the market for a smooth $2.7M.  I'm thinking with your move to PG columnist, this is right around where you'd be looking. Let me know. Thanks.
Jason Mackey
12:36
That's gonna be a hard no, Penny. Not sure I could afford the garage.
Mateo
12:36
Is Jared Jones getting a spot in the opening day rotation?
Jason Mackey
12:36
Depends a lot on tonight, but it's tracking that way.
Caelan
12:36
When can we expect the opening day roster to be announced?
Jason Mackey
12:36
Given how this group typically does things ... on opening day.
Scott
12:36
Who is the final bench spot going to go to?
Jason Mackey
12:37
Not sure. That's gonna be a philosophical choice. And they might wanna see the final few games play out. Assuming Joe, Delay and Olivares, it's basically between Peguero and Alika. Got into the why there just now -- playing time for Peggy versus Alika sitting.
Zach
12:37
Why does it feel like when the starters play, Henry isn’t in the lineup? Just a coincidence?
Jason Mackey
12:38
He has played a lot of road games, you're right. Not sure what to make of it, if anything. But he has barely played at home.

Do you believe that Cutch is worth keeping as a DH only with the occasional start in right field? Seems like his best days are way behind him and he may be taking a spot of an up and comer. Or his experience and ties to the city and ballclub too important to ignore?
Jason Mackey
12:38
I mean, they signed him for the season. And, yes, I think he occupies a very important role. He deserves to go out right, and this is that. No issues with what they've done.

12:38
Jason, why pray tell is Starkey responsible for you needing a bathroom break at 12:35? Was it that homemade chili he brought in the other day?
Jason Mackey
12:39
He's having me on his show.
Brucelet
12:39
After being in Bradenton all month, we have tried many restaurants on your list. I didn't see Beach House on it and we're thinking of going. Have you tried it?
Jason Mackey
12:39
Are you sure? I love Beach House. It should be on there. Do it. Sunsets are gorgeous.
12:55
OK, back to it.
Gregg from Shaler
12:56
What do s your projected opening day lineup/batting order?
Jason Mackey
12:56
Cruz, Reynolds, Hayes, Tellez, Suwinski, Cutch, Triolo, Davis & Taylor.
Frank
12:56
I asked last time about Shim and where he was, said you would ask around, you find anything out?
Jason Mackey
12:57
Darn, that slipped off the radar. Gimme another week? My apologies.
Q

I believe the Pirates have the lowest max team home run total in a year of all 30 teams at 171 in 1999. Do you think we could see this year’s team approach or surpass that mark? It’s not too pertinent to hit a lot of homers as a team to be successful as evidenced by the ‘13-‘15 teams, but I would imagine keeping up a decent home run pace like this spring would help cover the potential starting pitching woes this year.
Jason Mackey
12:58
I think they'll hit a decent amount of homers, yeah. Having Cruz helps. I don't understand the phrasing of the first thing you're saying, though, but I do think they will hit more homers.

The Pirates did due diligence in the German signing; do you know if they did the same thing for Trevor Bauer?
Jason Mackey
12:58
I just don't think there has been any interest in Bauer, enough to justify taking a closer look.

12:58
Hayes ended last season really well. Has he continued that through spring training?
Jason Mackey
12:58
He has. He has looked outstanding.

Re outfield alignment - it's just the first time I've heard this alignment .  Granted I've been distracted this week and unable to watch, is this how they've been aligning it this week?
Jason Mackey
12:58
Yes, it is.
Justin
12:58
Just being there every day, does the talent and / or vibes feel significantly different (ie, better) than the last handful of years you've covered the team?
Jason Mackey
12:59
Yes, much. It also doesn't guarantee anything.
Wayne
12:59
Are they REALLY still debating whether Davis should start the year on the 26-man?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I just think people are interested in the topic. Nothing wrong with that.
Justin
12:59
The off-field issues on German have justifiably taken the front seat, but do you get any feeling like  they're internally very happy about the arm they just got and the price they got him at?  To me there's no great reason to like his talents any less than the crop that got 14 mil per year over 1-2 yrs.
Jason Mackey
1:00
I'm sure they're intrigued by what he can do. But from what I can gather, they wanna see a lot more off-field stuff and just solid citizen stuff before talking about the impact of the arm.
Justin
1:00
You think Triolo and Peguero end up going 50-50ish at 2b?
Jason Mackey
1:00
End of the day, no. I don't think that's what is best for either guy.
