Jason Mackey's Pirates chat: 04.02.21

Hey Jason...who do you think the Pirates will draft, Rocker or Leiter and why?  From what I’ve seen and heard, the Pirates will get a quality pitcher.  Thanks.
Jason Mackey

Too early to tell, Carl. Honestly, there's a college season left, a lot of innings for these guys to pitch. I do think the Pirates will take one of the two. They have shortstops. Catcher, maaaaybe. But not at the expense of these guys, who look to me like generational talent. I think the reason of the season will potentially create some sort of separator for them.

How long of a leash do you think guys like Alford, Fowler, and Polanco have?  Obviously they'd ideally give them all at least a few months, but Stokes Goodwin Oliva and maybe even eventually Swaggerty and Cruz might all deserve to be evaluated as well.
Jason Mackey

I would think about six weeks, minimum. If there's nothing there by mid-May, I would be OK acting on something. But certainly not anywhere close to now.

You wrote: "It's not an accident that Cole started throwing more spin pitches -- with much greater results -- once he got to Houston. And the Pirates know exactly why that happened, believe me.)"  If the former front office knew this, why didn't they change their cookie cutter approach?  Arrogance?  Incompetence?  Busy looking for change in the couches?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I don't know. I don't think the people in charge -- like way, way up -- knew how bad it truly was, until Cole and Glasnow were gone and the moves were made. And they should have known beforehand, absolutely. That's on Nutting. Buck starts and stops with him. He shouldn't have let this go on as long as he did.

Since the pirates are on track to go 162-0, are they the new WS favorites?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I don't know how they're not.

Remember when Oakland planned on drafting Tucker, then had to settle for Matt Chapman?  The prior drafts are killing this team.
Jason Mackey
1:11
I do not disagree. Huge part why a change is needed. They drafted some solid players but not enough. And they didn't develop the ones they did have.
Sammy

Which current or former player did you enjoy interviewing the most?
Jason Mackey
1:15
Hey Sammy. All kinds, really. The former regime was so good -- Taillon, Musgrove, Bell, Archer, Kela. The current group is a little different. I like Reynolds, Newman, Moran and Frazier as people, but they are quieter. Some of the prospects are really good. Guys like Priester, Gonzalez, Martin and Peguero. Their future infield could be hugely quotable.

Building off of opening day, is it realistic to expect the bullpen to be this readily available all season?
Jason Mackey
1:16
Umm ... they probably shouldn't expect to have to cover six and strike everyone out, but generally do I think the bullpen will pitch a lot and pitch well? Yeah, I think you're going to see that plenty this season, for sure.

Jason: Are you aware of any plans to honor the 50th anniversary of the 1971 World Series champs
Jason Mackey
1:16
Not as of now, but I would have a tough time believing the Pirates would let that one slip by. Right now there was a lot of get the season started with COVID stuff. In time, I'm sure.

Hi Jason, do umpires review their calls after each game, periodically or at the conclusion of the season if at all?  Thank you.
Jason Mackey
1:17
Yes. They are continually reviewed, absolutely. Which I guess makes the entire process even worse. Ha.

Fun things to do in Chicago on an off day?
Jason Mackey
1:18
Right now -- work. But hopefully I can finish at some point and go for a run along Lake Shore Drive. That's my favorite. Wish I had more time, but I've been working since this morning and still have more to do.

Shouldn't the 3rd base coach share some blame for the Fowler blunder yesterday?
Jason Mackey
1:19
I mean, yeah. I suppose Joey Cora could have been screaming louder. But what he's he supposed to do? Grab Fowler and put him on third? Obviously they don't coach that. I'm pretty sure the coach -- who's watching the catch -- isn't thinking the runner is inexplicably gonna go halfway. But yeah, there's always some.

jason. yesterday when kuhl got on base he turned down his jacket. it was 35 degrees and he was coming off surgery. what are your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:20
I saw that. To each their own, I'm not Chad Kuhl, I don't know how his body and arm are feeling. I think there has to be trust placed in the player. If it's me, I'm taking the jacket. But I'm also cool respecting Kuhl's space.

OK, folks. That's it for me. Gonna go finish my off-day story. Thanks so much for doing this. Happy to be back on a regular schedule, too. Talk to yinz again next week!
