why dont they bring up gonzalez and send castro down he cant his and is fielding needs work
Jason Mackey
12:57
You may see it. But I think we need to wait longer than four games to make that move.
Dave

I think you’ve confirmed this sense a few times, but just to be sure: do you think there’s no chance that an increased financial offer would cause Reynolds to forgo any opt out? Back of napkin math would suggest to me that another 10-15M on the deal might get him close to what he’d get in free agency in a few years. I think he could still get paid, but he’s also going to be 32 in free agency, which doesn’t bode well for a corner all around good OF.
Jason Mackey
12:58
Correct. Sense I get -- again, these are negotiations, maybe they move off the spot -- is that the Pirates weren't willing to go much higher because an opt-out. I see your point, though.

RE: the CF 2024 question.  I was really just asking you who you like long term for that spot, sheesh.
Jason Mackey
12:58
I know. It's just tough to be constantly be giving crystal ball answers. Then you say something, and it gets brought back to you. And we're doing it without as much data as I would like.

Any assistant coaches who you think have a future as a MLB manager? If so why?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I think Donny Kelly will be a manager. Smart. Relates well to people. Gets the human element of baseball, the analytics and how they converge. Hugely respected. Wouldn't be surprised if this is his last season as bench coach, especially if the Pirates improve.

Why not structure a Reynolds contract with as a four year deal with multiple options. For example, make the first four years guaranteed at 11 M per year and then have a a team option for four additional years at 18M if exercised. If the team declines, Reynolds can exercise a 4 year player option at a 11M per year. That way both sides win. Reynolds is protected against poor performance and or injury and the team is covered by getting a good rate if Reynolds turns into a star or simply maintains his production through his early to mid thirties.
Jason Mackey

It's an interesting theory, but I don't see them doing it. At that point, Reynolds could just go to free agency and leave. Then he has leverage. Team already has something close to that, and they're left with nothing if he fails. I don't know. I guess you're saying a mutual option? Interesting concept, though. I'm sure there are 100 different ways we can spitball a contract from here. We're also not in the room.

Obviously the high draft picks we are paying close attention to, Gonzales, Davis, priester and endy via trade. Are there any under the radar prospects you have your eye on that you think could shine?
Jason Mackey
1:03
Sure. Does Ortiz count? I like Malcom Nunez. Swaggerty, unless we're not considering him a prospect. Curious to see what Mlodzinski and Nicolas do this season. Jared Jones is another who could be really good. Bubba and Solometo at High-A.

Should we be concerned about Hayes hitting a lot on the ground? Thought  that was fixed in the spring.
Jason Mackey
1:03
I don't think so, no. It's been four games.
Marc from Germany

I actually am from Germany and really just started to look into it!
Jason Mackey

Uh huh.
Ed
1:03
Do you think because Cleveland is paying their players that it exploits other teams who use the “small market” excuse?
Jason Mackey
1:04
No, I think they're in a different stage. I think as this moves along for the Pirates, they will do business differently. They already have to some degree, one would argue.
Too Old for This....

just don't believe this ownership/management can get it done, nor are they trying. Think vgas is more right than happy talkers in pittsburgh....hate what they have done to my Pirates.
Jason Mackey

You're certainly entitled to your opinion.

Surprised to see Owings at ss in AAA rather than Peguero.  Any insights into decision on these placements? Thanks
Jason Mackey
1:05
I think Peguero could benefit from more work. No issue there. Owings is filling a depth role. He showed some stuff in spring training. I think they view Double-A the way a lot of teams do: more about development, where Triple-A is more of a stable for MLB callups.

It looks like our off season spending spree on free agents , was a total bust

After four games? Come on now.

Why is it assumed that if a Brey deal isn't done that he needs to be traded, even in his last year of control?  If' he's till performing a QO can be issued getting us a pretty decent draft pick if he goes elsewhere.  We could possibly resign him at that pint as well if he's still performing.  Comepetion may not be as strong due to the gact that he will be in his 30s and a corner OF at that time.
Jason Mackey
1:06
My guess would be that people expect them to leverage the remaining years of control, but you're right. There's nothing that says that have to trade him should they feel to reach a deal.

What are your thoughts on Holderman as the Setup man?
Jason Mackey
1:07
I like it. His stuff is excellent. He needs reps in that role. He set up Diaz at times in New York. I think he absolutely can be that guy. Just needs more experience doing it.
Running

Jason, with the new "engagement" rules and the speed we have, why doesn't Shelton get more aggressive send more runners to steal?
Jason Mackey
1:07
I think we will still see more guys run. They need to get on base more first, however.

Hi Jason…who is better defensively…Bae or Castro?
Jason Mackey
1:08
I'd probably say Bae. I like his versatility to move to the outfield.

  1. Since you're a Crosby, Stills & Nash fan, I have to ask--Couch Album or Boat Album?
  2. What do you make of Edwin Uceta, the pitcher the Pirates picked up when they put JT Brubaker on the 60-day IL?
Jason Mackey
1:08
Not that much of a Crosby, Stills & Nash fan to give you a decent answer, sorry. ... He's a guy. Not sure I have a strong opinion either way. Didn't know of him and haven't seen him pitch once. Tough for me to say.

Clock impact has been interesting.  Do you think teams try more pick off attempts from catchers as pitchers are more limited in holding runners?
Jason Mackey
1:09
Yes, I do. That's something Hedges has talked about in spring. That back-picks will be more of a thing than they have been. I think we've already seen it to a degree.

Re: Reynolds, thanks Jason. I guess part of what I am wondering is if both sides would potentially be open to a higher offer than 106.75. Say 8/120? That's more of a guaranteed haul for Reynolds, but only 2M or so per year for the Pirates. If the Pirates aren't willing to budge on the opt out (which makes sense), they have to budge somewhat on AAV. The 8/106.75 is close to their initial AAV, so I guess I'm holding out hope that they give a slightly bigger commitment to Reynolds. If they are willing to do 106, 120 isn't really going to sink them any more or less if Reynolds underperforms or gets hurt. If Reynolds is looking at 30M or so in arbitration, then he'd need 90 in free agency to break even with the offer. At 32, that seems like a tall order, especially if he's permanently out of CF. Just seems like more money could help both sides, but maybe both sides are unwilling. Thanks again for chasing this and all the questions- I am sure you are more ready than anyone for it to be resolved.

Yes, very much so. An answer either way would be great, to end the speculation and random contract formulation.
