Because he's a really good player and would help the Pirates win. It would also send a message to fans that they're serious, not always going to trade their best players and this rebuild is gonna be different. To me, that outweighs any potential return. But, yeah. You're right. They absolutely could get a lot.

No reason, Dan. Couple things at play and just keep in mind there's only so much I'm gonna discuss here. ... I have been trying to be on Twitter less. I don't find it terribly productive and mentally exhausting more than anything. So there was a period that week -- which was especially bad with stress, long hours and negativity -- where I did try to preserve some sanity. Same time, it's a fine line for me. Obviously I believe in the P-G, the need for that story, etc. I'm also the one who's there every day, who has to maintain relationships, who gets yelled at when folks are made. I also answered the questions Mark had for his story. But I thought it would be most beneficial if I didn't comment or tweet or get more in the middle than I already am because I do need to worry about covering the team effectively.

I agree with you, Jason. I'm not so cynical that I think we're absolutely angling to avoid Cruz winning ROY at all costs, but I think it's not a great precedent to sit around too much with Cruz. At the end of the day what I'm thinking is that even if he struggles, get him the max MLB ABs so that he's in a better position to catch up to the game and impact things next year and beyond. I get going for the extra year of control, but I hope they throw caution to the wind and have him up in another couple of weeks, and if he does win ROY, then yeah, let's see about a similar deal to Hayes in the winter.

Yeah, I mean, if he plays really well, awesome. Extend him. That should be a no-brainer for me -- extending guys who deserve it, want to be here, and there's a need for them to be here. Especially at a reasonable rate like they could have Cruz for in that scenario.

Given that starters aren't likely to go past 5 innings for the win, making being meaningless as a result.  Aside from that, who do you see leading the Pirates with wins? A piggy back starter?

Probably Quintana or Keller because I think they'll have the most frequent shots at earning them.

Jason - seems like the recent PG expose of the pirates finances really blew the cover off this sham of a team. why bother with covering what's on the field if we know they're only going to spend as much as they make in ticket sales and concessions?

Because the P-G pays me to cover what's on the field? To me, it's important to note the revenue-sharing component here. The Pirates allege they're spending their RS money on coaching, tech, minor leagues, etc. I don't know if they are or aren't because we can't see their books. No one does. That's what I want to see -- documents audited by MLB's third-party accounting firm that show what they've done with RS money. Then we can really know if they are or aren't taking money. But I agree, the optics in the P-G story don't look great.
