Yeah. I think they can. Their issues have been confined to a couple things/instances/pitchers. Like Cahill blowing up twice. Keller struggling. Way too many walks to start the year. Over the past nine or so games, they've actually be OK outside of Cahill and Keller. If they get those two even remotely figured out, they're going to be better than last.

What’s so bad about the Pirates keeping everyone this year? The division is down this year. We might have a chance to win it! How many prospects do you need anyway. Rebuilds don’t have to be five-year projects. The Pirates were bad in 85 and 86 but were competitive in 87. Let’s follow that model!

The Pirates are not going to compete for the division. I mean, I'm definitely on the more positive side of Pirates writers when it comes to predictions and expectations. If they have individual performances that are tradable and you can mortgage those into assets for 2023-24, I'm absolutely sticking to the plan and doing that.

If Colin Moran keeps up this hot start, do you think he will be a candidate for a contract extension or for trade?
Jason Mackey
12:49
Yes, I do.

Is it time to find some offense for the bench or wait these guys out?
Jason Mackey
12:50
I think you can wait these guys out. Oddly, the Pirates are tied for the major league lead in pinch hits. I don't feel any sense of urgency there.

At this stage of the rebuild, should the 2021 priority for the Pirates be to get a top pick in the 2022 draft and player development vs winning a bunch of games in 2021? This Elijah Green kid looks like he would be a huge get for us to potentially pair with Lawler/Rocker/Leiter. Thanks!
Jason Mackey
12:51
You're here now. You can't tell professional athletes -- whose livelihood depends on performance, which contributes to winning -- to not play well. And if you're the Pirates, you're not going to pay guys NOT to play. So, again, we're here. They are what they are. I think they will still get a prime pick. I wouldn't worry about that. And they need not miss on it.

Would you be in favor of Goodwin/Oliva split in CF? Do you think the Bucs have Oliva in their plans?
Jason Mackey
12:52
I don't know what those guys are doing at the alt site since I haven't seen it and there are not stats. I know I'm in favor of doing something in center. If it's Reynolds and Evans shifts to left, I'm fine with that. If Oliva or Goodwin has been hitting and he deserves a chance, I would be fine with that, too. What I don't want is for Dustanthony Allfowlerd to get any more chances without producing. I've seen enough.

is Elijah Green living in Ben Cherrington’s head right now?
Jason Mackey
12:52
I don't believe so, no.
Gabe
12:52
When I look at rebuilds, especially recently with the Cubs and Astros success, it seems they do it with young position players while piecing together the pitching staff. Pirates had that success too in ‘13-15. I’m talking myself into Lawler
Jason Mackey
12:53
That's fair. I don't have an issue with the pick. But I also don't have an issue when you have two tremendous pitchers, when the college season is done, picking the better of the two. If it doesn't work, whatever. The process was sound.

Heard a couple of rumors about Mason Martin hitting a 500+ ft HR at the alt site. Any truth to this? Also what are your general thoughts on him, is his power for real?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I was asked this on Cook & Joe because John Dreker said he heard this happened at Pirate City. I would like some context. Martin has a ton of power. He's huge. But a 550' home run even for the most powerful baseball player in a controlled setting is nuts. Was it with an aluminum bat? If it was wood, I have a hard time believing it.

Jason- the last couple months of the year id like to see a rotation of Keller, Brubaker, Yajure, Crowe, and Bolton. You see any downside to that?
Jason Mackey
1:00
None. As long as those guys are pitching well. I want them to pitch who gives them results. Simple as that. And if they trade some veterans who do that early, great. Give the kids a chance. And I'm fine not reacting to Cahill struggling. It's a long season. We can't make a determination based on two bad starts and one good one. But to your point, if those guys earn the chance, then absolutely I would love to see them.

This pirates team has surprised me. They could easily be a World Series caliber team with Puig
Jason Mackey

I think they'll realize that soon enough, Ricky.

OK, folks. That does it for this week. Have a Neil Walker Zoom call at 1:15 for which I need to prepare. Thank you so much for joining, and we'll do this again real soon.
