The announcement was weird, so was Alldred actually selected before yesterday's game? Or was it after?
Jason Mackey
1:06
Yeah, there was some confusion there. I don't have the exact timing of the transaction, but it did happen yesterday.

good to see lots of responses -- anyone who says Pirate fans don't care doesn't get it.  Thanks for taking time :-)

Jason. With the current roster as of now. If you were the manager, what would your lineup be 1-9?
Jason Mackey

LF Gamel ... 3B Hayes  ... CF Reynolds ... DH Vogelbach ... 1B Yoshi ... 2B Chavis ... RF Suwinski ... SS Castillo ... C M. Perez.

I was coming up to ask isn;t it time to give Castro a shot and saw the story that he's on his way. Good! I think we've seen enough of Tucker and he can work out hitting L only in the minors. Doesn't it make sense for them to give a lot of these MIF a shot as they start working through roster moves to come?
Jason Mackey

I'm fine seeing what guys have, absolutely. We'll see on Cole. But totally fine with promoting players to see what they can do.

Hi Jason, no question. just wanted to say how much I enjoy your reporting. I look forward to your work all year. Best thing about following the Pirates right now is reading your stuff.

Man, James. You're too kind. Thanks so much. Seriously. Pirates fans are the best. One of the many reasons why I love this beat and these chats.

not that I’m trying to get rid of anyone, but is Vogelbach turning into a trade candidate? Or is he someone the Pirates can hold onto for the future?
Jason Mackey

He could be, yeah. Would have to think a contending club would be interested in a 30-homer guy, an All-Star having a great year who's beloved as a teammate. I would see value in keeping him, too, but if the offer is good enough, I think they would have to move him.

Castro has perfect record of homering for his 1st five hits post callup so we have that to look forward to!
Jason Mackey

That is accurate, Ed.

What qualifications got Oscar Marin his job?
Jason Mackey
1:11
A lot. I know you're mad about Oscar. I get this a lot. I will say, Oscar is very good with tech and developing game plans, sort of the new age-y stuff. Now, would I like to see some guys get better with Oscar coaching them? Yes. That's fair. It's also fair to acknowledge with whom he's had to work.

You don't even need to share this in the chat.  Just to reply to your question about "why would you DFA Tucker? He has options," players with options get DFA'd all the time.  The answer would be "to get a better player on the 40 man" I suppose.  Cal Mitchell, a better player who was DFA'd by a different team, etc.
Jason Mackey

That's fair. I just don't think they would do that if they didn't have to given what has been invested in him to this point.

Thoughts on this lineup

Thoughts on what lineup?

Do you think the current player development approach could be accused of a square peg/round hole situation with regard to their preference for positional flexibility? Maybe it's an unfair charge, but I just look at the Cruz situation and see a head scratcher. For starters, he makes spectacular plays as well as routine plays at SS, and some errors like many of the high end MLB SS. A SS with his bat potential is absurdly more valuable than a corner OF. But setting that aside, even in AAA they've only had him in LF 3 times, DH twice. I just don't see what the plan is for their most talented prospect, outside of a failed hope that he'd have an ok offensive start by this point so that they could call him up. I agree with the point you've reiterated a few times today that it's way too early to panic about anyone yet, but they seem stubborn on their thinking in this regard. I don't see what the problem is with stapling Cruz at shortstop and then calling him up when he's had 2-3 good weeks.

I don't agree with you, DJ. They have another top-five prospect who plays shortstop in Liover Peguero. You can't play two guys there. I wouldn't want to waste Peguero's athleticism and Cruz's arm. So, someone has to move. Trying to shift the guy who can move across the outfield in like three strides, with a crazy strong arm, to right field ... it's not nuts. Now, I do think they need to relax here. We'll see if they do. But I get why they'd want to try it.

Will the eventual return of Greg Allen lead to Suwinski being sent down?
Jason Mackey

We have several weeks, AJ. Allen isn't due back for another month. That's like 17 years in baseball time.
OK, folks. That's it for this week. Gotta shower and head to the park. Thanks so much for doing this as always. Love it. Talk to yinz next week from Chicago!
