Bob’s hatred for Cole Tucker aside, he was fun to watch at short last night. Nearly pulled off that diving play to his left and the double play was smooth too. I’d rather see Newman play some 3rd and scale back on Erik Gonzalez some.

I'm fine with that. I think you need to see what you have in Tucker, as I said.

Comments like the one Bob just sent in are blazing examples of the utter parochialism of Pittsburgh sports fans and their total laziness in doing analysis. There are numerous top prospects who have struggled to adapt to the MLB level -- look at Adell last year, or Lux earlier in this year. To say Tucker has had 7 years to show he is an MLB hitter or not is total obfuscation (does this mean Hudson Head is currently showing us in low-A at 19 years old whether he is an MLB hitter???). The guy obviously has some good raw tools, has put up solid exit velocities, and was the subject of some special mechanics training to try and tweak it out of him. Will it all come together? Hard to say, but the guy is still 24, has barely had any extended run in the big leagues, and put a nice swing on one of the better lockdown relievers in the league in an important spot. Please get a friggin grip with this kind of laziness. I get and share the frustration over roster filler like Vargas, but geez.

A very logical way of looking at things. Now that you said that, I might have to ask you to leave ...

Have you heard anything from sources about Ponce being a trade candidate? Longenhagen at Fangraphs mentioned earlier in the year that he could be an attractive under-the-radar guy as solid SP depth which still has an option remaining.
Jason Mackey

I highly doubt they're going to trade Ponce. And, no, I have not heard anything to that end.

Did you get a chance to check out what Jared Jones did in his debut last night? I like that kid’s upside a lot

I saw the numbers, no video. Was trying to spend a rare off-night with my family, but I did check out some numbers. Jones is a stud. Can't wait to see more of him.

I think that's an important point to make--I'm not saying you haven't, but it needs to be made clear that just because the Pirates may go under slot on 1.1 it's not "being cheap". There's a pool of money that they will spend in its entirety, and they are just allocating it differently.
Jason Mackey

I've tried to make this point numerous times. In the end, the Pirates WILL spend all of their draft money. It's just how they spend it.

Hello Jason.  No question for you today.  I just want to express condolences to the Stennett family.  Rennie Stennett was a good player who played the game as it should be played.  RIP Rennie.  Thank you Jason.

Thanks, Yuri. That's appreciated. His loss hit a lot of people hard.

Jason, just a positive note for all the bucco hand wringers. If they had Austin Meadows they'd just have another .200 hitting outfielder. And if they'd kept Archer and Kela they'd have 2 more arms on the IL. Let's give what we have a chance to season a little before we blow the whole thing up.
Jason Mackey

I'm not sure I'm opening that whole can of worms. Bottom line, you can do a little of both. Keep your guys. Give them chances. Develop the right way. Don't make horrible trades. It's not all about this guy or that. It's big picture. And I think the Pirates are in a better spot with that stuff.

Regarding earlier question about Craig, I dont think he should replace Moran at all but i think he could take Evans spot and role.
Jason Mackey
1:28
They could share a role, too. But Craig has to be able to do more than play first base.

This team is not winning anything this year.  I would absolutely have Keller pitch every five days and only think about changing that perhaps next year, and maybe not even then.  Now is the time that you let him learn and grow at this level.  If anything, I would look to find another starter just like him and have them both in the rotation
Jason Mackey

I agree with you, Mike. I have no issues. Granted, I wish we could see more progress. And it's confounding how he takes a step forward, then a step back. That's frustrating for him, for us, for fans, absolutely. But to me, that's what this year should be about for him. I think people are losing sight of that.

how long of leash do you think tucker has at the big league level? i personally would rather have him get AB’s everyday in indy than play sparingly here
Jason Mackey

I would like to see him play here. Why not? Who do they have who's setting the world on fire right now? Again, I might get creative. Perhaps try him in the outfield. But he's a first-round pick who just did a bunch of developmental work. I'm OK giving him a chance to show off his progress.

OK, folks. Looks like that's it for this week. Thanks so much for participating! Hope to do this again real soon!
