Baby Bucs. Ha. Yeah, inevitably. At least for Gamel and Vogey, they'll displace people. Who? That's TBD. I think they're going to give Tsutsugo a chance to prove himself once he's past this injury. I don't need to see any more of Hembree. I would rather give his reps to Crowe or Yerry or Alldred or Bolton ... or literally anyone who I think is actually going to be a part of this thing longer-term.

Everyone talks about Oneil Cruz’s defense as an issue, I’m not saying it’s not a concern but shouldn’t people be concerned with number of errors the presumed long term short stop Peguero has?
Jason Mackey
1:18
Kids making errors in the minor leagues. It happens. Mentioned before, Derek Jeter once made 56. I'm not giving either a pass, believe me. But I'm not freaking out and thinking they're horribly inadequate defenders either.

Really love beating the dodgers. How many guys on that team make more than our entire roster?
Jason Mackey
1:20
None, technically. If you look at MLB payrolls, per Spotrac, Pirates are at like $69 million or so. But your point is a fair one. There should be a cap and floor in MLB, absolutely.

Hi Jason. What role, and how much so do you think, players agents will have in the Bucs getting future key free agents. i.e. really top players listing clubs they will or won't play for?
Jason Mackey
1:21
Hi Steve, not a ton, honestly. Agents want to do what's best for their clients. I respect that. If the Pirates are winning and paying people, then agents will want their clients to come to Pittsburgh. If neither of those things are happening, then they won't.

Will we see the Pirates give out multi year deals to anyone this winter?
Jason Mackey
1:22
It wouldn't shock me if they extended Bednar. There's a good relationship there. He wants to be here. He's pitching his ass off.

Hi Jason.  Curious what your thoughts are on the Pirates season so far.  Have they exceeded your expectations or are they about where you thought they would be?
Jason Mackey
1:23
Certainly exceeded expectations. I could go a bunch of different directions, but given their injuries and lack of performance in key spots, I'm really impressed with what they've done. I like their bullpen. I think Reynolds is coming out of it. I'd like to see a better catcher and more prospects. But all in all, it's been fun.

I know you said by Mid June for Cruz, but any chance we see any guys promoted for the upcoming home stand this weekend ala Cruz, Martin, Swaggerty, Bae, Bolton, etc.?
Jason Mackey
1:24
It would surprise me if any of that happens. Sorry. I'm guessing you have tickets or are thinking about buying tickets. Cruz has the ankle. Martin still developing. Swaggerty over whom? You still have Mitchell and Suwinski. Have they done enough to get demoted? Maybe Bae over Castro, who has been up here some. Bolton at some point. Don't know about this homestand.

Just wanted to point out on Sunday, Cruz and Martin had more homers than the entire starting lineup
Jason Mackey
1:24
It was one day out of 180 or so. Believe me, I wanna see them up here, too. But let's at least use logical arguments.

Any chance the gurus bring up a catcher from the minors to replace either Heineman or Perez?
Jason Mackey
1:25
Jamie Ritchie could get a call when he's healthy. Heineman had three hits last night. Who knows? Maybe he just needs to play in front of his entire family every night.

Jason is this stretch out west a sign that the team could string together a decent season and maybe end up high 70’s in wins? Or just a fluke stretch?
Jason Mackey
1:26
I don't think it's a fluke stretch. I think they're probably a little better than most thought. Now, are they gonna consistently hang around with the Dodgers? Of course not. I had them winning 62. If we step back and reassess, if they got into the low 70s, I don't think it would shock me. Not saying it's going to happen, but it's more possible  now than I originally though, obviously.

why not bring Cruz up and use him  as a DH and work defense with him pregame? You would have your best coaches working with him them and allow his bat to impact games?
Jason Mackey
1:28
Well, he's got a bum wheel at the moment. I honestly think their concerns with him are more offensive than defensive. Or at least they were. He was hitting under .200. Don't know if he still is or not, but he's had a really good May. He has cut down on the strikeouts and chase, which has been a bigger point of emphasis than anything with his glove.

Do you see the Pirates employing the same draft strategy this year that they did last year?
Jason Mackey
1:29
It's too early to tell -- this time last year, Rocker was the unquestioned No. 1 -- but I'm not sure I see this draft being as deep as last year's. Could be wrong.

last years lineup on May 31st was 1. Frazier 2. Newman 3. Reynolds 4. Stallings 5. Polanco 6. Craig 7. Ka'ai Tom 8. Gonzalez 9. Tucker.
Jason Mackey
1:29
Ha. That's a good one, BVA! 1 for 9.

Will mlb ever step in about Bob Nutting, because he does every  3 to 5 years telling everyone look at our farm system while pocketing millions and millions of dollars.? This organization can't develop players anyway.
Jason Mackey
1:31
This seems like a backhanded accusation that Bob is pocketing millions of dollars in revenue-sharing. I don't know if he is or isn't, but I would hope that MLB -- with all of its heft -- would be auditing its organizations. I know it does that, through a third party. But I would hope those revenue-sharing dollars are being accounted for, even though it's not made available to the public.

last nights was 1. Hayes 2. Reynolds 3. Chavis. 4. Castillo 5. Castro 6. Chang 7. Suwinski 8. Heineman 9. Marcano. To me a much better lineup
Jason Mackey
1:32
Don't know if I would agree with that. I think I'll take the first one. That said, I don't disagree with their direction. I'm also OK with them sucking this year. I just think you need to do it in a way that fans understand -- in other words, play the kids and talk about what you're doing, ask fans to be patient with you and be reasonable with them. They're doing some of that, but not all of it.
OK, folks. That's it for this week. Gotta work on off-day and Sunday stuff. Thanks so much for participating. Talk to you again next week.
