I'm fine criticizing Derek Dietrich for how he plays the game. I don't have a problem with it, but I can see why some do. Bringing his dead grandfather into the discussion? I think that's taking it a little too far.

Wathching the braves, it struck me - is Matt Joyce's production gonna have to pick up for the Braves to make the playoffs? Is he the missing piece there?
Jason Mackey
12:19
I think the Braves are gonna be just fine with/without Matt Joyce.

Jason,  likelihood of Marte being traded as opined by Joe Starkey?  Actually makes a great deal of sense - lost track of the fact that he is 31.  Thanks!
Jason Mackey
12:20
I don't think it's tremendously likely, but I agree with Joe, in that it's an option they should be exploring. And if there's no market for Marte -- there might not be -- I would be open to moving Polanco, Melky or Dickerson ... anyone to get a pitcher or two.

I understand that you are a bit of a baseball historian and having read your chats I know that Jim Thorpe comes up a lot. A lot of folks bag on him cuz he only hit 7 home runs over the course of his roughly 10 year career, but wasn't 7 kind of a  high number for the 1910s? Thanks, Jason. Love the chats!!!
Jason Mackey
12:21
Enough with the Jim Thorpe stuff, please. It's not gonna get pushed through next time; let's just save everyone's time here. Thanks.

Some call what Huntington says spinning; I call it lying, much like what a politician does. Huntington talks about how difficult it is to make trades at this time. Yet the Phillies and Braves seem to make trades while the Pirates sink lower and lower. Does the so-called BMTIB really want to win, actually know how to build a winner, or  are these geeks simply jerking the baseball fans in Pgh. around?
Jason Mackey
12:22
I get what Huntington is saying. You need to look at in context of what he's allowed to do. You can make trades this time of year, but you need to be OK overpaying a little bit. The Penguins have done it, and it's OK because they need whatever they're getting and understand that it may cost a little more. That's not how the Pirates roll. So, I don't think Neal is trying to pull a sell job; it's just reality if you're in his seat.
ratso
12:22
All you need to know about Huntington is that he turned down a chance with a real MLB team in San Francisco to stay with an owner who has no intention of winning--meaning Huntington has no intention of winning and no competitive spirit--he just doesn't have what it takes to really compete!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jason Mackey
12:22
Do you really think Neal looked in the mirror and said, "Gee, I can win, but losing is soooo much fun! Let's do that." ... C'mon.

Bucs announcers getting a bunch of national grief lately over comments about Dietrich and Acuna. What's the deal with that?
Jason Mackey
12:23
I'm not quite sure. They do seem to be unfairly targeted, although I do think Wehner went a little far on his Dietrich comments.

In your opinion, what would it take for Nutting to open his wallet and start caring about the success of the Pirates?
Jason Mackey
12:25
I don't know if such a thing exists. And I think he cares. He just doesn't care probably as much as he needs to in the current climate, where you have to spend money because of baseball's ridiculous salary system. If don't wanna pay to play, I don't understand why you wanna own a team. ... Say Mark Cuban somehow buys the Pirates. He's gonna plunk down the necessary money. Probably Ron Burkle, too. ... Why you own a team -- when there are plenty of other people with a bunch of money who would buy -- but don't wanna spend what it takes to compete with the best, I don't don't get it.
Jim
12:25
Why is it that all Pirate writers.announcers and studio hosts fail to attack BOB NUTTING for destroying the Pirates? He is very clearly the cause of this debacle we have. He and the rest of management are complicit in destroying baseball in Pittsburgh! I am tired of the BS! Can anything be done to change this. The Post~Gazette does not even daily publish attendance comparisons anymore. Are you instructed not to?
Jason Mackey
12:26
Jim, I think you may need to breathe. ... One, the guys you watch on AT&T SportsNet have a relationship with the team; they have to be positive. ... Which external writers -- meaning the P-G, Trib, Athletic and DK -- are not critical of the team? Gimme a break. We publish attendance every day in the box scores. Do you really need me to write it in the story, too? I don't because it's in the box score.

Jung Ho hitting .400+ in Indy. Is he tradable or will he prompt a trade?
Jason Mackey
12:27
I don't see how anyone else would want that. He might add some infield depth, which is great, but I think if they make a trade it has to involve an outfielder. Jung Ho really doesn't affect that.
Ed
12:27
Joe Starkey brought up trading Marte. I agree.  Your thoughts on who would be interested and what we may be able to get?  A starting pitcher would definitely be welcome right now.
Jason Mackey
12:28
I could see the Phillies being interested, and it makes sense to get a starting pitcher back. ... Anyone who needs an outfielder should at least check. I can see not paying a ton, and maybe that kills a deal. But Marte, at minimum, is a legit major league outfielder who can hit and run ... even if sometimes he struggles to think.
MT Seats
12:28
Do the announced attendance figures have anything to do with reality? I see lots of empty seats watching the other teams players run around the bases...
Jason Mackey
12:29
None, in my opinion. And also atmosphere -- people actually giving a crap about what's happening. There wasn't a ton of that last night, although it was a weeknight game against the Braves.

Thanks for the chats!  good piece on trading Marte to Philly, any idea who we could get in return?  doubt red hot team is willing to disrupt whats working
Jason Mackey
12:29
Fair point. And they might just not wanna deal with Marte's propensity for making mistakes at key times.
DJ Spin

I'm sure there will be lots of questions about trades, but the Blue Jays seem willing to sell and could be a match for trading pitching for some upper level prospects. Could there be a match here, and would Huntington risk being even more aggressive than last year after the Archer trade has backfired so badly?

A blockbuster of Stroman + an RP (Biagini?) would be a dream for Pirates fans, but how steep do you think the cost would be? Could Craig be the centerpiece, or would we be talking Keller + Craig?
Jason Mackey
12:30
I don't have the first idea what the Blue Jays would be looking for, but I'm starting to sense you guys want a trade, eh? Could see this on Pens. Everybody starts concocting scenarios, about .0001 percent of which actually play out. They need major league arms, not prospects, right now.

Two part question. Will the Pirates look to give Josh Bell an extension so that would buyout arbitration years as well as a few free agent years? And would Bell be receptive?
Jason Mackey
12:31
I think they will try. If I'm Bell, there's no way in hell I'm doing it. He should bet on himself, keep trying to produce and make all he can. He's a Boras guy, too. I'm pretty confident that's what he'll do.

I think we should dangle Newman or the guy with the cool hair. No place for both of them. Concur?
Jason Mackey
12:32
Only if you inform other GMs if the guy available is the one "with the cool hair." Then you see what sort of offers you get. Surely they would be incredible.

Will Mitch Keller be back this year? Also American Beauty or Workingman's Dead?
Jason Mackey
12:32
Yes. And I think soon. ... American Beauty ... but not by much. More to the point: Anything live over any studio albums.

Two weeks ago I went to the AAA game here in Austin, Texas, which is the Astros’ affiliate.  Four guys who played in that game were called up and helped Houston beat the A’s last Sunday. The Astros and its farm team are both loaded, so why were the Pirates fleeced in that Cole trade? Unacceptable to not get a legit bat from Houston and two players from the AAA team. Does Neil know how to negotiate?
Jason Mackey
12:34
I think they felt like they had to trade Gerrit and wound up getting ho-hum return. I do like Musgrove a lot, and I think Moran has gotten better. But, yeah, they could have gotten a lot more. I don't think that's a referendum on Neal's negotiation skills, but they could've done better, for sure.

Is it time we start looking forward to the 2020 season when everyone is *hopefully* healthy? This season with the pitching struggles seems to be a wash and a waste of a great season for Josh Bell so far.
