You could definitely start to sense some frustration. Shelton has talked a lot about teaching moments, yada, yada, yada. By the end, I don't think anyone was in the mood for teaching moments. They were pissed.

Hayes is tied for 25th in all of baseball in WAR. A lot of that is from his defense obviously so he flies under the radar by not putting up huge flashy numbers. Should the 25th best player in baseball deserve more attention?
Jason Mackey
1:47
Probably, yeah. But he's on a bad team and earns his living predominantly by defense -- an unnatural vehicle for flash. In due time.

Is it fair to say this is the most important draft for the pirates and the longevity of their success, given they have 3 picks in the first 43? Also is there any word on where they might be leaning strategy wise
Jason Mackey
1:48
No word on which way they might be leaning. There won't be. And it's important because it's the next one. No one draft is more important than another. They need to get talent out of all of them. The only way for them to sustain being good.

Would Vogelbach be your first pick if you were starting a tavern league softball team?
Jason Mackey
1:48
No way. Taking Cruz every time.

Why do you think national media types are so quick to assume Reynolds is getting traded? It doesn’t even make logistical sense for the Pirates, in my opinion.
Jason Mackey
1:49
Probably because they haven't taken time -- and I get it, the Pirates don't warrant a bunch of national attention right now -- to dig into the nuance at play. Or, hell, to talk to Reynolds or the Pirates about him. Why would Nutting bother spending actual money if he planned to trade Reynolds?
PrinceBob

What will the Pirates do for a starting catcher at the beginning of 2023? I don't see projections that Henry Davis will be ready then. Or will he? And in the compare and contrast mother's styles, mine would never have said better late than never. She'd have died rather than be late.
Jason Mackey
1:50
It won't be Davis. No way. I don't see him being ready at the start. I could see them re-signing Roberto Perez. That would make sense. Could also get a FA. But they need to address the position in some way with an actual starter heading into '23, IMO.

Hi Jason. So you can't tell me the Pirates aren't a tad worried about this Hayes contract right? I'm sorry but he's been pretty bad since April. He's hitting .220 the past 30 games and .177 the past 15 and has little power. He's doing next to nothing offensively. I think in a few years just like the Polanco contract it will be perceived as a bad one. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I think you're wrong, Tom. No, I don't think they're the least bit worried about his contract. They signed him to what they did because they thought he would grow into the offense. His defense has been incredible. There have been injuries. And he hasn't been as bad as you're suggesting.
PrinceBob
1:51
How long will it be until Indianapolis needs a new nickname.
Jason Mackey
1:51
We've been through this. I don't think they're changing it. At least I don't think they have any plans to change, should say it that way.
Jim
1:51
Why won't Nutting or Williams give any interviews? I'm sorry but there is no way Nutting will spend in free agency like we keep hearing we will.
Jason Mackey
1:53
I don't know, Jim. It's a good question. It's far beyond the period of time where they should have spoken. They've been requested, I can tell you that.
PrinceBob
1:53
How has attendance so far this season compared to what you expected it to be at the start of the season?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Yeah, I can't say I've been too surprised by any of that.
Melky
1:53
Hi Jason. An acquaintance of mine indicated the Pirates have a better chance at a winning season in 2027 than 2023. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:53
We're comparing two things that don't exist? Awesome. Sounds fun.
Kyle
1:54
Because of Ke'Bryan Hayes defense you said the Pirates aren't having buyers remorse? So they paid $70 million for kid with good defense? Bro the dude CAN'T HIT!! HE NEVER HIT IN THE MINORS EITHER JASON!! Why do you feel the need to defend this? Hayes has so far been an utter disappointment.
Jason Mackey
1:55
You can yell at me as much as you want, Kyle. I'm not sweating the Hayes contract. Neither are the Pirates. He's played 68 games on his current deal. I don't see how that serves as a referendum on a seven-year deal.
Hal
1:55
why did u write some fluff piece on Diego Castillo when he's hitting under. 200? Who cares if he hit a few HR's recenty because he still stinks in the field and hasn't hit in 2 months. Stop with the ridiculous fluff pieces please on players that don't deserve them.
Jason Mackey
1:57
Can you link for me the piece you're referencing? I really hope it's not the one where he's been apart from his mother for three-plus years and you're saying that's not legitimate enough because of his batting average. Also, I'm gonna do my job in a way that's critiqued by my editors, wife and people who are actually there for every step of my career. Not random people with no vested interest in the outcome. Happy to chat and answer questions. But as far as which "fluff" pieces I do -- we call them features -- I'm not really accepting advice on that. Thanks.

How quick do we see Henry Davis? Could it be as early as next season?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Could be. He has a long way to go first, though.
Phil
1:57
Someone should trademark Cruz MIssile. I get half the proceeds.
Jason Mackey
1:57
I love it. I try to use it as much as I can. May need to find a new bit, though, and get some variation going.
Ace
1:58
No disrespect to Reynolds and Key because I think they’re excellent ball players, but neither seem to be very marketable personalities. Cruz on the other hand just seems to have that “it” factor. Gotta hope the Pirates can take advantage of a talent like this to help build the interest back in this city. I guess there’s no question in there, just a long winded observation
Jason Mackey
1:58
Yeah, fair. They're not dynamic personalties. Great guys, but you can't exactly picture them doing endorsements. Cruz is fun. You need guys like that.
Paul
1:58
How is that we can possibly talk about needing a catcher for 23 less than 24 hours after Roberto Perez day!! (kidding)
Jason Mackey
1:58
Do you mean Michael Perez Day?
Guest
1:58
Do you see the bucs having interest in reacquiring Stallings?  He seems to be out of favor in Miami.
Jason Mackey
1:59
It would depend on the ask, but man, would that go over well.
Have not seen anything that says they're dangling him, though.
Althea
1:59
Who plays first when we're a 500 ball club?  How come Cruz never mentioned as a first baseman?
Jason Mackey
1:59
You saw the throw he made in his '22 debut, right? That's why.
2:00
OK, folks. Gotta get showered and head to the park for the game tonight. Thanks so much for doing this and adjusting on time. Talk to yinz next week!
