Jason Mackey's Pirates chat: 08.04.23

Lip Service
12:45
Tim Benz wrote that Ben Cherrington's words about winning quickly are merely lip service if Bob Nutting isn't willing to pay. We know how is owner works. All talk no action. Is this more of the same and nothing will change ?
Jason Mackey
12:46
I didn't read Tim's column and am not about to criticize another reporter's work. I also don't know what you're asking me. They extended Hayes, extended Reynolds, brought in some free agents this offseason. Hasn't worked out great, but it's also not inactivity.

It bothers me that so many Pirates strike out on third called strikes. Recently Henry Davis saw six pitches and didn’t swing at any. He was called out on strikes. Last night the Pirates struck out ten times, six of them were on called third strikes. If its obvious to me that Pirate hitters need to be more aggressive at the plate, why doesn’t Pirate management do something about it?
Jason Mackey
12:46
That's the approach they want. Be married to an approach. If a pitcher beats that approach, so be it. I agree with you. I hate it and wish they would be more aggressive. It's not working out. But that's why.
Open the books.
12:47
Is there anything local leaders can do to force Bob Nutting to open his books ? He does get tax money. Shouldn't he be required to have his finances thoroughly examined by the Commonwealth before he gets our money ? Are local leaders afraid of challenging this man ?
Jason Mackey
12:47
Short answer: no. I actually talked to former Mayor Bill Peduto about this very thing a couple years ago: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2019/10/17/bill-peduto-pit...
12:48
We've also investigated the Pirates' profits and whatnot using Freedom of Information Act requests, plus info from the SEA crossed with payroll and revenue numbers for this story: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2022/04/10/pirates-ticket-...
12:49
MLB does not require teams to disclose how they spend revenue-sharing funds, and the Pirates are considered a private business that rents PNC Park. In other words, there's only so far you can legally go.

Jason, should I be concerned if we lose 94 or so and the youngins look bad, this rebuild could rightly be considered a raging dumpster conflagration?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Depends on how they happen, I suppose. But I've maintained that a win total in the 60s wouldn't sit well with Nutting & others ... and still feel that way.
J. Mayer
12:50
Jason, which of my Jerry renditions are you particularly fond of? I know, there are many. And my body is still a wonderland.
Jason Mackey
12:50
Thanks, John. Big fan of a lot of them. St. Stephen > The Eleven might be my favorite.
TV
12:50
Watching the game on national TV and the announcers said glowing things about this team. I'm not sure what they were watching because it seems like there is no hope of success for this franchise in any living beings lifetime. I think MLB is telling them to not speak the truth for fear it will hurt the sport
Jason Mackey
12:51
You think announcers speaking positively of the Pirates is going to save baseball? Not sure about that one.
Stash
12:51
Jason, why is this Cullen B person getting all the glory? Nepotism? Some other strange reason?
Jason Mackey
12:51
Ha! I answer every question. He did ask a lot of them. I'm working through the others.
Bigfoot
12:51
These "great prospects" in this teams farm system seem to be like Bigfoot or UFO's everyone claims it exists but nobody has actually seen it
Jason Mackey
12:52
Good one. They're young kids. They take time. Oneil Cruz was pretty good. There have been positive signs. There has also been some crap. Let's see where it lands.
Judy

I think back to 3 of the Pirates' former #1 Draft Picks... namely Tucker, Craig & Swaggerty. Is Gonzales the next name that could get added to that list? We all better hope the list doesn't grow to include Henry or Quinn or Termarr too. More Prospects don't make the Show than do... right? Depends if you view the glass half empty or half full. Hey Jason, at least they'll have one sure thing in Skenes for 4 years before he prices himself out of town and the next window opens.
Jason Mackey
12:53
I think we're going way down the road on Gonzales. Sheesh. Give the kid a little more than this before rushing to judgement on anything. I would hope they have more than Skenes.
Gregory P
12:53
Jason, just wanted to give Henry some encouragement and let him know I’ve seen worse defense in right, up close and personal, Take care.
Jason Mackey
12:53
Thanks, Greg. Hope you're well.

Good afternoon Jason who is the next player called up will it be the pitcher we got from Philadelphia to pitch tomorrow or will it be the guy that’s hitting good in Indy go Bucs
Jason Mackey
12:53
I think Falter will start Saturday, yes. Next player called up? Other than Falter, might go with Andujar, ending our national nightmare.

good afternoon jason - thanks for all your great work - stupid question/comment - should the pirates have made skenes pick a number (his preferred 20) and start to market it ?
Jason Mackey
12:54
Ha. There's plenty of time for that. And we should know soon when he starts in affiliate ball, right? They'd be wise to start printing jerseys with Skenes 20 on 'em.
Surley
12:54
Why doesn’t the pirates  have promotions on early weekday games? Bobblehead on a Saturday night with the Phillies in town. That game would have been close to a sellout without a giveaway.
Jason Mackey
12:55
Not sure, Surley. A little outside of my knowledge base. I hear what you're saying, though. A way to kind of spread the attractiveness. I think they like weekend games in the summer to create an event, but you make a fine point when it comes to attracting crowds for less than attractive games.
Codger
12:55
Hasn't 20 been retired (Pie Traynor)?
Jason Mackey
12:55
It is. Good point. Wasn't thinking straight when I typed that response. Thanks for catching that.
Hank
12:56
Jason is Termarr Johnson better than the prospects that have been recently promoted?
Jason Mackey
12:56
Eventually, yes. But he's still young and has really only seen High-A pitching. I think Termarr is going to be really good. He just needs more time, IMO.

Hat tip for a great job covering the many stories around the trade deadline for Pirates.  There's so much noise this time of year and you really brought clarity to process. Your coverage was WAY more on the mark than a lot of the national coverage.  Well done!
Jason Mackey
12:56
Thanks so much, Will. Appreciate your kind words on my coverage.
12:57
OK, folks. That does it for this week. Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope you enjoy the game tonight!
