Good afternoon Mr. Mackey.  I saw your response to the question regarding Mr. Groat and respect.  Since he was an analyst for Pitt basketball for so many years, it might be a good PR move for him to be a guest in the broadcast booth for an inning or two giving his opinion on today’s game and how it was when he played.
Jason Mackey

I understand what you're saying. However, I think there's plenty of respect and admiration for Dick. Groat that exists independent of whether he joins the Pirates broadcast.

September call-ups are limited this year, roster expands to only 28. The 40 man rosters were too much but MLB should have set it to expand to 30, not 28
Jason Mackey
12:53
Agree, 100%. The September callup rules are dumb.

Any idea when we are going to see the electronic strike zone in the majors? Is it inevitable? If so, your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:53
Outside chance of 2022. I think more likely 2023. It's coming, though.

How do you like your steak cooked?
Jason Mackey
12:54
Haha. Love this. Medium, please. And any sort of seasoning, I'm in.

Do you think signing Bryan Reynolds to a long term contract will bring a lot of fans back to the team?
Jason Mackey
12:54
I can't say what it will do for fans, but yeah, I do believe they will get something done with Reynolds. I think they need to.

Although I understand the logic and importance of "getting the calls right," part of the "enjoyment," folklore, history and excitement of sports is the human element in it. That is true for baseball as well as every sport. Not sure that I want computers ruining that aspect of the game?
Jason Mackey
12:55
A big part of my brain agrees with you. Then my eyes watch how many blown calls there are -- because it's damn hard, right? -- and override my brain. Or something like that. I just feel like, why are we putting up with this if we don't have to?

Has anyone given any indication whether Tsutsugo is a free agent after this year or not? I'd think he would have agreed to that in his original deal with the Rays, which seems to be the norm for foreign players, especially of his age. Basically, he does he come with contractual control or not?

I'm trying to obtain clarification on this from the Pirates and will pass along when/if I get it. Follow on Twitter @JMackeyPG to make sure you see.

In honoring the Pirate staff member who played for team Israel in the Olympics, I notice that Bob Nutting was there on field to congratulate him. Just curious, how often does he actually attend Pirate games? If you recall, McClatchy was there behind home plate almost every home game.

He's there most games. And he/they ask for him not to be shown because he doesn't want to be a visible part of the broadcasts. Fans take that to mean that he's not around or doesn't care. He was actually walking around on Federal St. this past Sunday, mingling with families.

Hi Jason!  What did management see in Castro that he skipped AAA and came up to big leagues.  What is it that he has that others in AA don’t?
Jason Mackey

I think they saw an advance ability for contact -- which we're obviously seeing wane now. His defense has been consistent. He's athletic. He's a mature, confident kid. Sometimes minor league structure is also about playing time, making sure there's enough of it for everyone, and also working with certain coaches. I think that stuff had more to do with why he was in Altoona than some sort of referendum on talent or results.

As to the Tsusuga signing is it true that Tampa Bay is on the hook for most of a 2 yr $12M contract? If so, and he becomes successful here, that should be some solace for those still fretting about the Chris archer trade.
Jason Mackey
12:59
Could be, although he'd have to hit about 4 billion homers. Ha. Seriously, Rays are on the hook for most. Working on clarification about after this year. It's a good, low-risk move. Why not, right? But it's not gonna undue the damage of the Archer trade.

Can the Yankees catch the Rays?
Jason Mackey

I wouldn't be surprised if it happens. I think the Yankees are gonna get really hot down the stretch. It's already started.

OK, folks. That does it for this week. Thanks so much for participating. Good chat. Let's do this again next Wednesday from back home!
