Where do you see Hayes hitting when he comes up?  2 or maybe 5-6-7?  Cant see him higher/lower.
Jason Mackey
1:50
Seven at the highest, honestly. I'd put him in a low-pressure situation to start and let him get comfortable.
Alan
1:50
Why not draft a catcher now and then?
Jason Mackey
1:50
They argued they were taking best player available. That's fair. They need pitching. But, yeah, they need more catching prospects. Or any.

Does Nutting ever crawl out from his rock to appear at games or does just stay home in his Lair of Evil ?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I believe he crawls out from under his rock. Occasionally he'll hang out under the bridge, too.

I must commend you on your writing, your objectivity, your thoughts, opinions and insights on the Pirates this year! In the past, I must admit that I found you a bit of a "homer," whether right or wrong on that opinion. That said, why do the Pirates, either with their current management team or the past one, refuse to use the word "REBUILD?" Although we all know that this is exactly and currently what they are doing, maybe just maybe it would appease a number of rightly upset fans?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Thanks, Matt. I appreciate the kind words, I think. I asked Ben Cherington that exact question in February. This should help clarify, even if I don't completely agree: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/02/gm-ben-cherington-pirates-plann...

Brubaker looks like a legit #4 starter.  Agree or disagree
Jason Mackey
1:52
Small sample size. I wanna see more.
Alan
1:53
Who is your favorite major leaguer and why?
Jason Mackey
1:54
I don't know if I have one, honestly. I feel like that has been beaten out of me with the beat. I like catchers. I like watching Adam Wainwright pitch. Max Scherzer, too. I like seeing what goofy stuff the Rays can come up with. I loved watching/listening to Vin Scully. I just like the sport. I don't know if I have a "favorite player."

If Craig Meyer were to bat against the Bucco bullpen, then is there any doubt that he would hit one over the wall?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Only doubt would be how far over the wall.
Alan
1:54
Will the Pirates still be in PGH in the year 2030?
Jason Mackey
1:55
I don't ever see them leaving. They have a lease with the city! (Actually I don't know if they do or not. I just wanted to type that line.)
Mr. Happyface
1:55
Do you think Mr. Nutting belongs in State prison or Federal prison for his criminal behavior ?
Jason Mackey
1:56
Neither one. It's a free country. He's allowed to run his team the way he sees fit, and you're allowed to vote with your dollar. If you're mad, I would encourage you to do that -- or write a letter telling him how you feel -- instead of making meaningless jokes in a chat.

Another concussion for me. Am I approaching the MLB record? This is #8.
Jason Mackey
1:56
I'm sorry, Francisco. Get well soon.
Dan
1:57
Would you trade Trevor for Clint Frazier + an alright prospect? Would the Yanks?
Jason Mackey
1:57
It would depend on the prospect. My hunch: I'd hold out for more than they were willing to offer.
Drew
1:57
Are you getting any feel for whether Cherrington might make a flurry of trades on the day of the deadline or if the deals could happen any day now?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Hard to say on timing, but I am not going to be surprised if he's fairly busy
DaGama

After watching the play Sunday where Moran was injured, sure glad he didn’t choose to play pro hockey or football.
Jason Mackey
1:58
I don't know what makes you say that, but I'm not going to make light of a situation where a guy's brain is involved, if that the route you're taking this down.
Tony
1:58
What happened to Bill Brink? All of a sudden last year he leaves the Pirates beat. I feel like there is a lot more to that story that hasn't been let out.
Jason Mackey
1:59
None whatsoever. Bill took a job as our enterprise guy, succeeding Stephen Nesbitt. Then he wanted to get out of the business and works for Carnegie Mellon University. Bill has a little baby and didn't wanna do baseball with a little one -- their first -- on the way. I get that. This is a hard, hard beat with kids, and I struggle with that sometimes. Mine are 6 and 21 months. I miss a lot of stuff with them. But there's nothing we're hiding. Bill wanted to do something else. That's not a crime.
Mr. Happyface

Should fans and the people of Pittsburgh just face the fact that there is no hope or there will never be any hope whatsoever for the Pirates. Ever ?
Jason Mackey
2:00
Personally, I don't think so. But it's not my job to tell yinz how to think or what to think. MLB teams win on smaller budgets, but they have to do certain things well. The Pirates were not doing those things well, so a change was made. I do think Cherington and others can do them well -- draft, development, etc. -- but it won't happen overnight.

Thanks for the extra long chat!
Jason Mackey
2:01
You got it!
Mr. Happyface
2:01
Tougher job ? Bomb Squad technician or the guy who is charge of the Pirates social media who has to try and create a positive spin on anything this team does ?
Jason Mackey
2:02
Haha. I don't know, but I don't envy their social people. They're just trying to do their jobs, promote their team, and they get crushed by people trolling them all the time. But, hey, my answer on that is to win. Look at the Penguins. You win, you invest, you win more, you invest more, it's a cool cycle. If they would win (and invest) this would be an incredible baseball town with the sport's frequency, how much people love their teams here and how starved Pittsburgh has been for a winner. Look at 2013-15.
Tony
2:02
If the Pirates get no-hit again today, will we be the laughingstock of professional sports teams? Would that even embarrass Nutting?
Jason Mackey
2:03
Wait, they're not that now? J/k ... Yeah, it wouldn't be great, I agree. I also don't think the odds are very good that it happens.
Tony
2:03
Okay so we have a surprise in Stallings who is hitting .300 right? Pirates had 2 days off, play Tuesday night and John Ryan Murphy starts!! Why Jason? This is why people are already fed up with Shelton!
Jason Mackey
2:03
Because he wanted to play Stallings today -- the day game after a night game with travel. Then they'll split the doubleheader Thursday. That's it.
2:04
OK, folks. Looks like that does it for this week. Gonna go watch the game. Thank you, as always, for participating. Look forward to doing this again next week after the trade deadline.
