Would imagine it has everything to do with Hayes' outstanding August.

Matt Gorski has power, speed, and defense in CF. Hit tool is still not great, but he profiles with more upside than Suwinski. Why not give him a MLB shot?
Jason Mackey
12:29
I'm all for giving Gorski a shot. However, they don't really have consistent playing time available. I'd also like to see Gorski play more at Triple-A before considering anything further. Would disagree with you that he has more upside than Suwinski as well.

I see that fans’ favorite favorite AAAA player, Miguel Andujar is being recalled. Even if he does well, can we trust anyone’s Sept stats? They are notoriously misleading.
Jason Mackey
12:30
Yeah, even if he came up and crushed it -- which I don't think he will do -- I don't know if that would change my opinion on Andujar given what we've seen from him since 2019.
Jack
12:30
Jason, should that hitting guru from Altoona be taking a look at my action? Gracias.
Jason Mackey
12:30
No. You've been working a lot with Haines, and that's great. I've seen positive signs from you, Jack. Just need you to swing the bat a little more, please.
Daniel Sametz
12:30
Hi Jason,
I saw the Pirates being more swing aggressive on KC.
Do you think it's a change in aproach or just for that team in particular?
Jason Mackey
12:31
I think there are a couple things. Maybe not change in approach but realizing they need to be more aggressive ... yeah, probably something there. Also true that Kansas City isn't good. There were pitches to hit. And there's probably also a little of young hitters just maturing and getting better.

12:31
Do other teams around the league look at the Pirates development system as being way behind the curve?
Jason Mackey
12:32
No, they do not. The Pirates have certainly missed on guys. But other teams do as well. The Cardinals let Johan Oviedo get away.

12:32
Is Gonzales the odd man out now? I waited for him and love that power. Why are others getting called up/playing time over him?
Jason Mackey
12:33
The odd man out is an odd term, no? So much changes in baseball. Is anyone ever really out? Just step back and think about how many moves or changes occurred to this season. Nick has actually been really good in the minors, and I expect him to be back up at some point.

As a prospect Rodriguez was floated as a possible 1B candidate but he's looking more likely to stick at catcher.  Do Pirates still see 1B as a secondary position for Rodriguez?  Could we see more of Davis there in future?  Could Santana be a potential return candidate for 24 to stabilize 1B, since no one else looks like a lock. Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:34
Let's try this again: I don't see Henry Davis playing first base. He has yet to take a grounder there. As far as 1B for Endy, maybe, sure. He's capable there. Could give him a breather, keep his bat in the lineup. But I agree with you, he has been solid at catcher. Best option for the Pirates is likely to add someone from the outside to fill 1B in '24.

12:34
Jason, just keeping it light, man. Groove on, brother.
Jason Mackey
12:35
Awesome. Just make sure I don't tweet a picture of food. Otherwise I'll be told I need a reality check. For crying out loud.
Tim
12:35
At what point do you believe the threshold of small sample size has been surpassed (ABs or innings) and we get a reliable picture of what a player is likely to be? And is that size larger for a very young player (say 22) than for an older player (say 26)?
Jason Mackey
12:36
Those are some magic numbers, Tim. I don't have those answers. I don't think anyone does. Yeah, I would agree they're different for 26 vs. 22. I'm OK accepting more variance for 22. But I can't give you a clear-cut number for either one.

12:36
Jason, am I capable of bringing more to the table, as the old timers say?
Jason Mackey
12:37
Lol. Bring more to the table. Pound the table. Set the table. Table that thought. Why the obsession with tables in nomenclature? ... More than you did in August? Yes, likely. The power is nice. Need to get on base more & up the average.

Any chance the Pirates spend on a player for more than 1 year this offseason? I’d love for them to sign a starter for more than 1 year
Jason Mackey
12:38
Yeah, I think there's a chance of that happening. And I agree with you. I think it will come in time. I think the Pirates first need to prove to outside FA that Pittsburgh is a place worth committing to for multiple years. That comes with wins & progress. It could happen this winter.
Noah
12:38
Hey Jason. Do you think the Pirates are going to spend some money this winter. There are some significant upgrades they need to make and I think GMBC is starting to feel the pressure a little bit.
Jason Mackey
12:39
Yeah, I do. I think they can see needs -- SP, 1B chief among them -- that will be best addressed externally. They've said all along they'll supplement when necessary. I sure hope those weren't just words that sounded good at the time.

Hearing a lot of negativity regarding the Pirates TV contract and broadcasts for next season, including streaming for $30/month, turning over the broadcast rights to MLB and taking a 20% loss in TV revenue which would give Nutting a reason to cut payroll.  Experts agree more of the same and widening the gap of the have and have nots.
Jason Mackey
12:41
Yeah, I've read the same stuff you have. Couple things: 1. The 20% drop is not firm. There's wiggle room. The Pirates were surprised where that number even came from. 2. Nothing has been finalized. 3. There are other ways to make up that money. 4. Loss in revenue doesn't have to correlate to a lower major league payroll. There are many, many buckets, as they like to say when looking at payroll in the inverse. Not sure why the first to go would have to be MLB payroll.
Jason
12:41
Hey Jason. Are there going to be any major trades for the pirates this off-season you think? We have a glut of middle infielders but none of them have exactly proven themselves.
Jason Mackey
12:42
I don't know what constitutes a major trade for you, but I would err on the side of saying no. Who would they even trade there? Marcano? Bae? There's no market for those guys. I'm sure there will be a trade or some trades ... but I don't expect anything terribly big.
Jonathan
12:43
The last few years, the Pirates concept with FA has been to sign re-treads, reclamation projects, older veterans, etc. A lot of the team next year will be on low contracts (except for Reynolds/Hayes). With the excess money they should have to just get back up to the 2023 payroll and maybe boost it by 15-20 million, shouldn't the Pirates look to spend $15-20 per season on a good SP and a similar amount for a 1B? I honestly think they can be a solid team next season with the pieces they will bring back while adding a solid SP, 1B, and maybe a veteran SP as well.
Jason Mackey
12:43
Yeah, I mostly agree with you. I think they'll be willing to spend some on those positions. Maybe not $15-$20 million per season on one guy, but I expect them to address those spots via free agency in some way, especially pitching.

12:43
Is it true that the people that attended the Pirates KC series are considering a lawsuit for pain and suffering ?
Jason Mackey
12:44
Good one. Here all week?
Austin
12:44
chances we trade bednar this off-season?
Jason Mackey
12:44
Not very high.
JT
12:44
Jason, thanks, that was sarcasm, apparently not well deployed. Take care.
Jason Mackey
12:44
You're good, Tri. See you soon.
Give up
12:44
Didn't take as long for them to screw up Paul Skenes as I thought. Well done Pirates. Well done
Jason Mackey
12:44
We're basing this decision off of two-thirds of an inning?
Hero
12:44
Jason you are a courageous man. Anyone willing to sit through Pirates KC and Pirates St Louis has my utmost respect. God bless you Sir
