Why can't the Pirates match the Brewers in payroll...or at least be within $10 million?  Will they get there in 2026?
Jason Mackey

I don't think they will match the Brewers in 2026. The answer is also longer than I can accurately tackle in a chat. But I agree with you. That if you can't spend as much as the Brewers or similar markets, there's a problem. The Pirates' issues also aren't exclusive to dollars spent.

Great to have you back on the Bucco Beat! Love your work!!! Do u think the Bucs will get "serious" and address the Outfield this off-season! There is  no legitimate CF nor LF...Cruz is not yet there in CF...Brey is gradually  looking like a DH ...Cutch best years are behind him...Jack can p lay defense consistently but has lost his swibg...Caninero is average...No one at Triple AAA putting up the numbers to earn a spot...there are some arbitration tender players that could be had...what do u think Bucs will do?

Thanks, Terry. I would be surprised if they moved off of Cruz in CF. No way they pick up Jack's contract if it's $1.7 M (it won't be). He shouldn't have a place to start. I do think they'll add some bats and make some changes, as I've been saying. Don't think Reynolds becomes a full-time DH yet. Triple-A is tough. Not a ton there. Griffin will be pushing soon. I think they'll sign a FA who's relatively notable and trade for a bat. Hopefully more on top of that.

Jason, welcome back to the best. I wanted to ask when do you think in the off-season the Pirates will start making moves, do you see think it could be early on in November or maybe after new years?
Jason Mackey
1:37
I would be surprised if they start signing guys in November -- after the World Series. Probably more December into the new year.

How does Conner Griffen not make this team out of Spring Training? He is already the best hitter on the team and best infielder and a pitch hasn't been thrown. What difference does it make to start his MLB clock when he won't play his entire 6 years in Pittsburgh without a Salary Cap anyway?

Konnor Griffin*

Because he hasn't played a game in Triple-A yet? I mean, I'm all for letting him try, believe me. But that's kind of an important level. What if he has a lousy spring? Would you keep him or let him earn his way up? I'd do the latter.

The more money nutting invests in the team, the higher the chances his ROI will be higher. When we made the playoffs and had sellouts, I’m sure he made a ton more money then than now. Why won’t he spend upwards of 100 million like every other small market team does?
Jason Mackey
1:39
If I had an answer that would sway Nutting, I would tell him, Chris. Believe me. I think they're going for a step by step build. Win, spend a little more. Win, spend a little more. That's what they did the last time. It's just tough when the "win" part doesn't happen. How about spending to beget winning?

I hit send too soon. .i meant to finish with, if the Pirates don't have a good offseason, is there ever going to be hope?
Jason Mackey

Like, for the team or humanity in general?

Can Horwitz play 2nd base well enough for him to move there permanently if a 1B bat is our most attainable option or Flores breaks out and takes over there? For me Nick hasn't done nearly well enough to earn a guarenteed starting job.
Jason Mackey

He can. But what do you do with Gonzales? I think there's flexibility to absorb that. If Flores pops, that could be a very good thing. Gonzales can play a couple places. I'll play him anywhere if he hits. Whoever hits needs to play. Worry about the rest later.
Alright, gang. Marathon chat today, but a great time. Loved this. Great to be back. Let's do this again real soon!
