Jason Mackey's Pirates chat: 11.13.25

They might, yes. Could minimize the return. That's also a fairly friendly contract. Could be better, I know. But it's not horrible. Could also be part of something else.

If MLB is locked out and loses a whole year, are player service times moved forward a year? Would hate to miss a year of skenes, jones, chandler, and griffin when we already barely get them for a cup of coffee
Jason Mackey
1:08
They do not earn service time during a lockout.
Josh
1:08
If there is a lockout within the next few years and let’s say a salary floor is implemented  (because i just don’t foresee a true salary cap happening) what, in your opinion, do you think the salary floor would be set at year 1?
Jason Mackey
1:08
I don't think you would see a floor without a cap. I'd go maybe $120 million for a floor? Need a wide range of error, though, as that isn't something folks seem to have a great feel for.

Do you think any of the Pirate brass ever read these chats?
Jason Mackey
1:08
Yes, I do.
John Rambo

Jason, the Pirates should trade for Mike Trout. Why is this a bad idea? What if the Angels retained ~15M per season of his remaining contract? Mike seems OK with never going to the playoffs, so nothing would change there.
Jason Mackey
1:09
There's a good one. Why would the Angels retain that money? Wouldn't it make more sense for them to trade Adell or Ward for pitching?
Prospects

How do you feel about termarr johnson heading into next season?
Jason Mackey
1:10
Encouraged by what Termarr did post-Aug. 1. But I'm not sure where he fits. I could also see him being included in a deal. They need sweeteners. He would qualify as that.
Mike
1:11
With Rule 5 decisions looming, who are some players that need to be added to the 40 man or risk being lost in your opinion?
Jason Mackey
1:12
Esmerlyn Valdez is the big one. Not sure there's anyone else I'd worry too much about losing, honestly.

Jason, you have mentioned Lowe a couple of times, what level of compensation do you think the Bucs would have to give up?
Jason Mackey
1:13
Would imagine a multi-player package involving at least one starting pitcher. Hope would be not Chandler or Ashcraft. Maybe Barco, Burrows, Harrington or guys in the lower minors. Pirates actually do have decent depth in that part of their farm system.
Mr Ed
1:13
On a percentage basis, what is your level of confidence the Pirates, for the first time in 10 years, will acquire two external significant impact free agents  that have multiple year contracts?
Jason Mackey
1:14
Zero with the you're phrasing that, Mr. Ed. You're asking whether they will sign multiple external free agents to multi-year free agent deals. I don't see that happens.

They might do that once. They might trade for someone. Or sign a multi- and a one-year. But I don't see two FA multi-year deals coming.
Jason
1:14
Reasonable moves. Moves you know Cherington would also have to try and maneuver through
Jason Mackey
1:16
Got it. Thank you.
Extend Konnor Griffin. It's a smart move, would help '26 and demonstrate something to fans.
I'd trade for a 3B/LF and sign a FA 3B/LF to a multi-year deal. Either position, either contract. Doesn't matter. If I have to trade Mitch but the return is very good, fine.
Could trade Mitch for someone cheap like Jordan Westburg, then spend the money elsewhere. Just fix the offense.
Lefty reliever who can pitch in leverage situations.

Teams paying lux tax should not be able to sign foreign players when posted.  (i.e. Japanese superstars).  They have enough $$ on hand to buy every other FA star to fill a need.  Do you agree?
Jason Mackey
1:17
They should be allowed to do whatever they want. Within the parameters of a salary cap. And floor.

But as it's currently constructed, yeah. It's a drop in the large bucket of baseball unfairness.
Intl market
1:17
I feel like something ben cherington does do well is his work in the international market especially compared to Hunnington before him. Whats been so different about his approach? seems to just be more quality over quantity and better development
Jason Mackey
1:18
Why do you feel that way? What international players have they had come through? I don't agree with your premise. They haven't been nearly good enough on the international market.
JuniataKid

Given Cherington’s track record, and assuming he has money to spend this off-season, what are the odds that he can actually identify a couple/few decent hitters to add to this team? I just don’t see it.
Jason Mackey
1:18
The precedent isn't there, I know. And I don't have a great counter-argument. It's also not my job to defend Cherington and the Pirates. It's a perfectly fair question & concern until they do a better job acquiring offensse.

The pirates were very aggressive on the base paths in the minors with alot of players swiping tons of bags griffin, de los Santos bros etc. Why is it seemingly a struggle in the majors? (Besides not being able to get on base to steal)
Jason Mackey
1:19
Because they don't get people on base nearly enough. Ha. Gotta preserve the few they have. Also tough to steal second when you're in the dugout.

Mr. Mackey, always a brighter Thursday with your insights and your time. You're on the mound in a blowout and Skenes (who isn't pitching that day) convinces DK to let him pinch-hit. What's your sequence and the outcome? Thanks as always.
Jason Mackey
1:21
Thanks, Phil. I'm sure Paul would hit me hard; everyone else did. I'd throw him a first-pitch split. He's looking for heat, trying to swing. Gonna try to take advantage. From there, I'm going heat inside. That's gonna set up heat outside, when he thinks -- 0-2 -- that I'm gonna try and drop something in. (My curveball stinks, and I'd rather avoid it.) Paul strikes out.

Reynolds for Trout. Angels retain 15mil per season of Trouts remaining salary.

Ain't gonna happen 2.0.

Hi Jason - Love following your work in whatever role you’re in!  Since the last time you were on the beat, the PG and other media outlets don’t send reporters to every away game.  For someone like you who immerses themselves in the beat and brings us readers along with you, how will this affect your approach to covering the team next year?
Jason Mackey
1:22
My goal is to work my tail off and do everything in my power to ensure the paper keeps me on the road. It's critically important to doing this job the right way. I have no desire to do this job regularly from my couch. Need to be there.
Thanks
1:22
Thanks for answer about charity stuff! Just noticed it hadn't been around and was a nice way to give money to good cause if was gonna spend it on a pricey autograph. Mlb.con has skenes autograph jersey for $800-1000. Would be nice if charity got it instead of fanatics
Jason Mackey
1:23
I agree with you. Sorry I don't have more/better info.
Pat

If/when Cherington is canned after this season, is it more likely his predecessor kickstarts his own rebuild like Cherington did, or tries to build around the existing pieces?
Jason Mackey
1:23
My hot take: Cherington will be here. I think they figure it out.
Brandon bidois
1:23
Id keep him in rule 5. Stellar season last year
Jason Mackey
1:25
That's a good call. Error on my part. Trying to go too fast. I would, as well. Thank you. Relievers are the easiest to stash, too. They would almost assuredly lose him.
