I don't know enough, honestly. It sounds like I should be. People are excited about Cruz, Chen and Maguire. I'm also probably leaving somebody out. But it is tough because they're new and we've seen so little.

With the contraction of Minor League affiliates, will the Pirates be hurt by not having as many spots for developing players?
Jason Mackey

Personally I don't think so. If you can't develop guys with four affiliated teams, plus the Dominican, plus a whole bunch more outside of MLB or MiLB, you need to look at your process more than anything. I think they'll be fine.

How did NH have a farm system without any catching prospects for years? I understand he drafted Baldness Stallings and he has developed into a respectable catcher, but Martin was FA, Cervelli trade, Fort trade, stewart, robi trade, Doumit, paulino, jaramillo, david lee ross all DL guys.

That's a good point -- other than picking on poor Jacob's bald head. You can't pick on Jacob Stallings. He literally might be the nicest person on the planet. It is weird how they didn't really develop anyone. That said, I'm not sure I would count on always getting Martin and even Cervelli when it comes to FA signings.

Do the Bucs still pay Vasquez? Did they pay for his attorney?
Jason Mackey

They do not pay for his attorney. He's on the restricted list, which means he doesn't get paid. Basically hits pause on everything, and I think he can be on it forever.

Favorite rendition of Cold, Rain and Snow?

Thank God. A non-baseball question. Even better that it's the Dead: I like the early stuff, but my favorite is probably 7/4/89, Truckin' Up To Buffalo. That whole show is magic. Has my favorite Bertha, too. Peak Brent.

Stallings is a good guy. Was only joking. Happy with his production and he has been impressive. Whats your outlook on him staying at starting catcher this year?
Jason Mackey

Oh, he's 100% their starter. He'll catch as many games as he's able. No question there. He's above-average defensively, helps the pitching staff, well-liked. You live with the offense. I think Perez will play when he should play -- day game after a night game, the odd additional start here and there. But Stallings is the clear No. 1.

Ever thought a story explaining all the new stats? Having trouble following the game now when batting average and earned run average have been trumped by WAR, OPs+, etc.
Jason Mackey

I have. I think maybe later in the offseason? I've also gotten comments about explaining pitchers -- grips, usage, terminology. I agree that maybe a dictionary-based story might be of use. Thank you for suggesting that.

Can the Pirates set up a go fund me page to pay for a catching prospect?
Jason Mackey

Sure. It's called season-ticket sales.
And with that, I'm out, folks. Gotta do a couple things before the football team (maaaaybe) plays the Ravens. Thanks so much for participating. Can't wait to do this again next week!
