I do see them doing something, probably a starting pitcher. Not sure I can give you a name, though. Sorry.

To your point about other small market teams being smarter (not making bad trades), should the Pirates lose 1 or more prospects in rule 5 draft, should that be considered a mistake/not being smarter?
Jason Mackey

It would depend on who they lose. If it's Tahnaj Thomas, I mean, that stuff happens all the time. Can't protect everyone. If it's Malcom Nunez, yeah, I think that's worse.

whoops, chat cut off. I agree lots is involved, including feasibility. Not going to happen in every case, but to me it seems like to some extent with the mid tier guys- Benintendi, Quintana, Stripling, a few others let’s say- there is a question of will, because they should be doable in that 10-15M per year range and they should have clear opportunity. Of course, the player may have lots of varying priorities, including winning a WS. Honestly, that’s what worries me about Q. He seems like a perfect option to further bolster the veteran presence, but he will have contenders willing to pay more. I wonder if 3 guaranteed years at his age might be what’s needed to fully sway him. I hope we can do it.

I wouldn't hold your breath on Q. I hope I'm wrong ...

There seems to be a ton of positivity from what ive read in the industry about Cherington's rebuild. Lots of prospect depth, player development seems to produce breakout players every year, lots of players that were low picks are producing past their pedigree, etc. Those on the team and around the team seem to be pretty hyped about the next few years as well. Its obviously nothing until they produce wins but it seems to me like the corner is being turned?

You sure, though, Cullen? We've had a couple people in here say it'll never work. I'm guessing they've put eyes on these players, have talked to others who have evaluated them, etc. ... Oh, wait.  ... But, no, to your point. I think this is all part of the process. It'll get better some in 2023, then more after that.

6 million dollars for a 37 year old washed up first baseman..really?
Jason Mackey
12:48
$6.725 million. And I have no issue whatsoever with the move.

Jason, I am a strong believer that GMBC is a very good GM, but he gets bashed by fans on other sites, Are his critics fair, and if he loses Nunez in the rule 5 draft will he deserves the bashing?
Jason Mackey
12:49
Can you criticize without bashing? I don't think it was smart to leave Nunez unprotected, but by and large, I have little issue big-picture with what the Pirates are doing, certainly not with Cherington's role in it. It's slower than I would like. But I see why they're doing it.

You totally lost me when you called Joey Gallo a “sensible add” in the same sentence that you noted he made $10 million and hit .160.  This is exactly the type of move that is non sensible.   Did you momentarily walk from your computer and a prankster take it over, as you are usually much more astute…or would you care to try to rationalize that?

Before trying to crap on me for something I wrote ... I would first urge you to stop evaluating players solely on batting average ... two, have at least a little couth ... and three, realize that he could actually produce again. Dude has hit 40-plus homers and is not yet 30. You're telling me he's gonna stink in perpetuity? I can't get down with that.

Should the Pirates take a chance on making a trade for a "fallen" prospect like Kelenic or Adell? Seems like both teams have somewhat moved on from the players and shouldnt cost *too* much.

I wouldn't have anything against it -- I think there are value in those deals -- but it depends on what you would have to give up. Not sure I would give up much.
OK, folks. Looks like that does it for this week. Bunch of great questions. Thanks so much and talk to ya next Friday after the Winter Meetings.
