I think Cutch will be back in 2024, as I've been saying. Don't know what you're hearing, where or what the whole sensing thing is about.
Henry
12:43
Jason, is the brass insisting despite all previous and available evidence that I’m a catcher in the hopes of maximizing my trade value?
Jason Mackey
12:44
I'm not sure why the brass is insisting that. Maybe they're just recalibrating everything, and they realized they should at least give it a shot. Maybe they want to open you or Endy up to a trade. Maybe they're picking C over RF in terms of a position you can grow. Don't totally know.

12:44
Gonzales will be the most expensive pitcher Nutting allows Cherington to sign, isn’t he?
Jason Mackey
12:44
I don't think so, no.
Gary
12:44
Hey Jason enjoy your work. I’m going to be the bad guy here . With closers shelve life short & sometimes they fall of cliff with out warning I definitely look to trade Bednar for a starter or 2
Jason Mackey
12:45
I wouldn't. Think about this: If a team wants a close -- meaning it probably doesn't suck -- why would it give up two MLB-ready starting pitchers to do so? I don't understand that.
Gary
12:45
then groom mlodzinski .do you agree
Jason Mackey
12:45
I don't, Gary. I would keep Bednar.

In Your opinion, are the Pirates talking with any free agents or are they waiting until the best available free agents are signed before they make a move?  Seems like they are again alienating the fan base by their lack of movement and the “Scrooge” mentality!  Enjoy your work!
Jason Mackey
12:47
Talking, yes. Negotiating, no. There's a lot of talking that happens. But I think the Pirates -- if you wanna call it a "Scrooge" mentality, I get it -- are trying to spend their dollars as far as possible. I think the FA market on SP right now is very high. The Pirates are likely waiting for that to change or pursue options another way (trade).
Q
12:47
Hey Jason. What do you think a trade headlined by Endy could yield? Considering the catcher logjam
Jason Mackey
12:47
Tough to say. Depends on the other team. But I think it could get them a major league-caliber starter, for sure.
Ryan
12:48
Good afternoon Jason with The Pirates getting a starting pitcher in The Trade what do they do next sign a free agent Pitcher and first Baseman
Jason Mackey
12:49
Hey Ryan. I think it's one or the other, which I realize is non-helpful. I guess I would go with pitcher, because the need is greater.
Randy
12:49
Do you think the pirates see Jack Suwinski as a long term solution in centerfield? Could a trade for a solid defensive center fielder be a better fit? The Astros currently have a log jam at centerfield with Jake meyers and Chas McCormick and a trade with them could make sense.
Jason Mackey
12:50
I see Jack as better suited in right field, honestly. I don't know if I would trade anyone, though. I think I might try to cover this internally -- again, prioritizing pitching and being realistic about how they conduct business. I'd like to see Bae get some run out there. He's a fun player. Brings an element they don't have. And I think he's a much better CF than 2B, although his routes to balls are sometimes wild.

Hi Jason, thanks for the chat. I am not real excited about the aquisition of Marco Gonzalez even though it cost the Pirates $3 million and not a great prospect, but the fact that Gonzalez had surgery for a nerve issue in his left forearm in August, I know your not a doctor, but these type of injuries can be career ending is that correct?
Jason Mackey
12:51
They can. But it's my understanding that the Pirates did a deep dive on this. I find it hard to believe they would press forward if there were a bunch of red flags. There's never a guarantee with pitching, but I don't think I have the same concern that you do.
12:52
I also don't think the deal should be celebrated like they just got Randy Johnson. He's rotation depth for $3 million and, like, giving up nothing. That's fine for a 4/5.

The Marlins need a C and SS. How about Davis and Peguero for 2-3 pitchers (out of Cabrera, Rogers, Puk, Meyer, Weathers, Fox Chapel's Patrick Monteverde) and 1B Troy Johnston (AAA/AA 26 HR/116 RBI)? I'm thinking Hank doesn't have a good fit with us and we have a lot of middle infield depth.
Jason Mackey
12:54
I like the Marlins as a potential trade partner considering their needs and assets. However, I think your proposal is lopsided. Young pitching is a commodity. I think the Pirates would have to give up way more to get what you're seeking. Which may be fine. They need pitching. But your deal isn't equal, IMO.
Endy
12:54
Jason, why is the brass giving such weird and nonsensical ideas about the catching situation? Me and Hank are premature trade bait at this point, no?
Jason Mackey
12:54
Yeah, it's odd. But it's not like they're gonna say, "Hey, we're looking to trade Endy or Henry!"
David
12:55
Have you heard any rumblings about the Pirates having interest in Lugo? More generally, I know Cherington keeps repeating his fishing metaphor about hooks in the water, but is there a list of 4-5-6 names you have heard any more often than others, provided that we issue a disclaimer that these are only volatile rumblings, not you saying that the Pirates will do X or Y? Or is it really that they are interested in the field and waiting for other dominoes to start falling more?
Jason Mackey
12:55
Have not. Again, given how this group operates, I'd have an easier time getting social security numbers. I know they legitimately have interest in, and check on, a lot of guys. Which should not be surprising considering they have two starting pitchers.
Mike
12:55
Is it more likely Pirates add via FA or via Trade at this point, especially concerning the SP holes?
Jason Mackey
12:56
I think via trade, Mike. Could change. But for now, trade.
Steve I
12:56
Hey Jason, with what he has shown so far, any concerns with Davis becoming a good mlb player? He showed flashes but also a lot
Jason Mackey
12:57
No, I think Davis is gonna be solid. I just don't know where he's gonna play defensively. I worry they're jerking him around positionally too much. I would have been fine with him in RF. Give him a whole offseason to work it out and be adequate. But that's obviously not what they're doing.
Sauerkraut Saul
12:57
Thanks for doing this Jason. Can we assume that Marco Gonzales won’t be the best pitcher the Bucs bring in this offseason? Also I know you mentioned they were mainly geared toward trade before, do you think that’s still the case and perhaps a bigger name such as Bieber or Edward Cabrera could be a realistic option?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I don't think Gonzales will be their biggest move, no. ... I have a tough time seeing Bieber based on dollars and control. Maybe Cabrera given the Marlins' needs, but I still think the price would have to be quite high. 4.01 ERA, > 1 K/9, .206 BA against ... that's really good for the cost.

Jason, what would you think about acquiring Ryan Noda to play 1b? He had a 770 OBS, a left handed hitter and I believe the Pirates could get him at a good price.
Jason Mackey
1:01
What makes you believe the Pirates could get him at a good price? He's a rookie with that OPS. What would compel the Athletics to do that? I don't hate Noda, but I don't see how the Pirates would be landing some sort of bargain here.
Kevin

For a non-Pirates pause: do you have a prediction on where Ohtani lands? Do you have a place you'd like to see him go? Personally I'd be glad to see Toronto get him.
Jason Mackey
1:02
I'm sticking with the Dodgers. I know they confirmed they met with him. It's also his best chance to win a World Series, which I would imagine is what he wants more than anything. I, too, think Toronto would be fascinating.
Ryan
1:03
What are your thoughts on Marco Gonzales as a starter in the rotation this year? The trade seems really underrated given the pirates only need to pay a small part of his salary.
Jason Mackey
1:03
Yeah, been saying & writing a lot of this ... I'm good with it. Comp to Anderson & Quintana. Fits at PNC. I think the elbow is fine. They're paying nothing. Proven track record of performance. Gives them innings. Totally good with it.
Justin
1:03
Do you think it's more likely that they bring in more of a corner bopper outfielder or a speedy CF type?
Jason Mackey
1:04
Yeah, I think any outfield add at this point would be more offense-based than defense.
