It depends. I think it would take a lot for the Pirates to trade away young pitching. Trading away young position players, yeah, I think they could consider that.

What do you think about moving Suwinski to 1B?
Jason Mackey
1:20
He was their best defensive outfielder last year. I know that's a low bar, but what are we accomplishing here?

Are there any stipulations on minor league rule 5 guys being returned to their org like the ML draft where I'd they don't stick on the 26 man they're offered back for 50k?
Jason Mackey
1:23
Minor league guys are not required to be added to the roster.

In terms of how you understand the inner workings of negotiating, how much risk do you think there is in the cautious approach to FA pitchers, in terms of them getting snatched up? I see the risk to their self-imposed austerity, but it seems like they could aggressively focus on someone like Flaherty or Lugo and go the guaranteed 3rd year right now to lock it in. Maybe too hopeful, but I worry once the big pitchers get signed, other teams will either pivot or be willing to pay more than us over 2 years. It would be refreshing to see us aggressively identify a target and then go get him, and then slow roll a potential trade / other moves such as 1B or another bat, RP etc.
Jason Mackey
1:25
That's one side. Remember the other one. Just because the Pirates aggressively pursue doesn't mean the player signs. If he's that good, wouldn't he have other options? The Pirates could massively overpay, but when was the last time they did that? I get what you're saying, but I'm not sure it's a realistic way of functioning ... until they have more of a recent track record of success.

Is Trevor Bauer dead to MLB and more specifically to the Buccos?
Jason Mackey
1:25
I think someone will give him a chance. But I don't think it'll be the Pirates.

really alarmed by the reframing of what was expected to be guaranteed for the TV revenue - are you super concerned that that will keep the Pirates payroll growth a lot lower than we might have anticipated (which was already fairly conservative)?
Jason Mackey
1:26
A lot lower? No. A bit lower? Maybe. I think it depends on how much they lose, and we don't know that yet. There are also different ways of making money. Attendance this past season certainly helped.

If they keep insisting that Davis is a C, you have Endy, and Delay as well (who should be Keller's personal catcher), why was Ali Sanchez signed to a ML deal?
Jason Mackey
1:26
Sanchez was signed to a split deal. He's depth in case something happens to one of the other three.

How is it good for the game that another team has to lower payroll by trading another star to the Yankees? Has there been a bigger cry for a salary camp than this salary dump trade?
Jason Mackey
1:27
There has, but I get your point. Baseball's financial system works against it, IMO. There should absolutely be as cap and floor.

1:27
Who would you like to see play 1B for the pirates next year? Internal options don’t look great
Jason Mackey
1:28
My preference would be Carlos Santana. But I don't think it's going to happen. If it's not Santana, maybe platoon Brandon Belt? I even threw out Eric Hosmer because he'd come dirt cheap. And I'd only play him against lefties.

Was the PTBNL for Gonzales a theoretical rule 5 guy that Atlanta would want or one if our actual prospects in the org. Is our end of the deal cash considerations now?
Jason Mackey
1:28
I think it's gonna end up being cash. Cherington said he thought that would be settled rather quickly. I think the goal was for the Pirates to select someone Atlanta wanted in the Rule 5, then that would complete the trade. But I think those plans got scuttled.

Yeah, Bednar looks like one of those guys who's mean hates kids, dogs and old people when he's not on camera...  joy
Jason Mackey

Yep. Very difficult. Prickly.

Hi Jason. Do you think Cruz will be ready by opening day and beyond. If not what position will he move to and who would replace him at short
Jason Mackey
1:29
I think he's going to be ready for opening day 2024, and I think he's going to play shortstop. I'm not moving him, no way.
Paul Skenes

Jason, what are the odds I'm pitching the home opener?
Jason Mackey
1:29
For ... Altoona? Indy? Sorry, don't think it's gonna be Pittsburgh.

Is Henry Davis another top pick bust, seems like we had a lot of them over the years
Jason Mackey
1:30
He's played 62 games. IMO, that's not nearly enough data. I also don't think he will be.
Rob
1:30
Do you think the moves made by other NL central teams will have any effect on how the pirates continue the offseason? The division looks to be up for grabs and every team except the pirates knows it.
Jason Mackey
1:31
No, I don't. If nothing else, I think the Pirates are extremely comfortable staying in their own lane, doing things their own way. Hell, they're world champions at that sorta thing.
Tim
1:31
Most likely player who debuted in 2023 to be traded and why in your opinion?
Jason Mackey
1:31
I would go with Peguero or Gonzales, just because they have a bunch of middle infielders, those guys have pedigree, and I could see another team being attracted to them as prospects.

Do the Pirates win a world series before the steelers win their next playoff game?
Jason Mackey
1:32
You mean in 2027, like Dr. Joe Starkey predicted? Certainly tough to see the Steelers winning a playoff game by then.
Paul
1:32
Let's be honest here. The Pirates are in the 5th year of a 5 year rebuild. They have 1 starter, no qualified 1st or 2nd baseman and are looking for outfield help. What have they got to show for any progress at this point.
Jason Mackey
1:33
They ... won 14 more games than last year. I don't know, man. Anything I say, it's just gonna get interpreted like I'm praising them, but I'm just trying to be objective.
1:35
One, the bulk of their moves came after 2020. Right or wrong, they argue the rebuild started then. So really year 4 of a rebuild, but whatever. They jumped to 76 wins and finished 37-35 with a bunch of kids who will be back. That doesn't suck. They did long-term deals with Hayes & Reynolds, and I think they will get one done with Keller. They drafted Skenes. They've acquired more international talent (Polanco, Shim, Cheng, Blanco Jr., Chen, Suero, etc.) and drafted better. ... Not my job to convince you, but I'm just presenting some of the progress I've seen.

When do the Pirates resign Cutch and when do you see the Pirates signing more free agents?
Jason Mackey
1:36
I think it happens later this month or real early next. I had heard after WM and before Pirates Fest. So, there's probably a window here to get confidence in his health and figure it out.
OK, everyone. That does it for this week. Thanks so much. Figured there would be a bunch of questions, and I was right. Nearly 100 minutes. We'll do this again real soon!
