I saw an old interview that Bob Costas did with Billy Beane, Brad Pitt, et al, about the movie Moneyball.  One of the points Beane made was that the concept is about finding value where others don't see it yet. I guess spin rate is a recent example of something that has become more valued because baseball people understand it better.  Any ideas on what might be something we might be hearing about more in the next couple seasons?

I wouldn't term spin rate a "Moneyball" concept. Spin rate is something that has mattered since the dawn of pitching. We're only calling it spin rate now because we have to give everything a fancy name. A guy with a good spin rate back in the day also had a tight curve or tight break on his curve. Maybe he commanded the pitch well. Now we're able to dissect every revolution of the baseball and quantify that. All teams do it. ... One area where I'm intrigued about Moneyball-style stuff is this, Cherington basically trying to exploit options for pitchers. Wrote about this a few weeks back: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2020/12/04/Pirates-pitcher...

I was going to ask you that right before you answered that Oviedo question. So we’d have to return him to the Mets who would have to keep him rostered even though they drafted him from the Indians? I was curious how that would work with the trade

Yes, I'm almost positive he would go back to the Mets, although I will check on that.

The players who were taken off the 40 man roster and assigned to AAA. Do you know if they got invited to spring training?

Not as of yet, although I would expect that they will be.
