I know you have a ton on your plate with work family, etc but would you be interested in doing segments on live air in the bucs booth? much rather listen to you then Fort or Young
Jason Mackey
12:51
Ha. I would love to have a role on the broadcasts. And I've made that known to AT&T SportsNet. Thus far, no movement. Which is fine, it's their station. Would be cool to swing by for an inning and talk some ball. The Reds do something similar. Don't hate on those guys, though. KY and Fort do a tremendous job.

What’s crazy about Oneil Cruz is that his defense has been excellent by advanced metrics, while his offense while occasionally spectacular has been hampered by an absurdly high chase rate. Can Cruz learn more patience in the majors?
Jason Mackey
12:54
Oh, absolutely. I have no doubt. What's bugging him right now is hugely coachable.

Why have we not seen Bae yet?  Stats and age say that he should have been given a shot ahead of some others.
Jason Mackey
12:54
Yep. It's an interesting question. My hunch is because he may just stick. So, figure out the other crap, then if he comes up and deserves to stay around ... there ya go. It's also his first time consistently in Triple-A, so I get wanting to see more consistent production.

How long do we have to keep watching VanMeter suck? I want to see what Bae can do.
Jason Mackey
12:55
I know. End of the month, early August it'll change.

My bad on Rodolfo!  He's is definitely not a reindeer LoL. Good points on him being blocked.
Jason Mackey

Merry Christmas, Terry.

In its mid-season review, ESPN made the valid point that the Pirates haven played an absurd number of position players: 29 in all, including nine at second base alone. Can we please, please have more of a set lineup in the second half with players whose roles are more predictable?
Jason Mackey
12:55
I wouldn't hold your breath. It's how Shelton roles. Now, the roster shuffling is the result of not being a very good team. But there's always gonna be movement with the Rays way of doing things. This ain't the Cardinals.

Do you think Nick Gonzales is still in the Pirates long term plans?
Jason Mackey
12:55
Absolutely. I have no doubt.

Any savings that come from under slot deals (I'd guess Barco, Brannigan, more of the college pitchers) are probably going to be used to sign Kennedy to an over slot deal?
Jason Mackey
12:56
I think you're on the right track there.

Your best defensive outfield from Reynolds, Madris, Suwinski, Swaggerty and Mitchell
Jason Mackey
12:56
Would probably go Reynolds, Swaggerty, Suwinski, Madris and Mitchell.

Your the new Pirates GM and you were told that your payroll will be $100 million next year.  What do change/maintain going forward and what are your priorities in the off-season?
Jason Mackey
12:57
One, I make sure nobody is messing with me. Two, I buy pitching. A lot of pitching. Then probably a first baseman who can hit for power and an actual catcher. I'll give young guys a chance in the outfield. Hayes, Cruz, Chavis, Bae ... some others, see what happens. But pitching and a little more pop would be my priorities.

First time I have been able to sit in on your chat and participate more than a question. Have thoroughly enjoyed it!
Jason Mackey

Terry, I always answer everything man. Come on!

Why haven't you written anything about Tyler Anderson and the paltry return we got for him last year, especially when he's pitching so well this year. That deal certainly doesn't bode well for the trade deadline this year!
Jason Mackey
12:59
The paltry return? Do you think they took the bad deal and left the good one on the table? I did write about Anderson, BTW. But I wasn't mad about the Pirates, so you'll probably hate it: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2022/06/01/tyler-anderson-...

Fair or foul? Age is often times overrated when determining draft stock bc in theory that only applies when players are given contracts to play a majority of their careers in the city that drafted them, and few times that actually happens especially when we talk in regards to baseball and the pirates specifically?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I would agree that I think age is overrated in draft-related analysis. There's no cap on a player's ability to learn and evolve.

How much does a team get to discuss financials with potential draftees and their agents prior to drafting them? I ask because I wonder how they have an idea who will sign under slot. Thank you

A pretty good deal, yeah. I can't give you a number, but the Pirates -- and other clubs -- take guys knowing what it will take to sign them, absolutely.
OK, folks. That's it for this week. Thanks so much, as always. Talk to you next Friday!
