In light of the Horowitz injury, signing Paul Goldschmidt is looking real good now.  I think Cherington regrets his decision not to sign him.

Ahh, this makes more sense now. ... Probably not, honestly. They were bought in, right or wrong, on Horwitz. They'd probably worry about playing time when Horwitz got healthy.

How can the Steelers effectively evaluate their own QBs when they do not allow them to chgange plays or throw the dang ball over the middle?
Jason Mackey

Not to be too sarcastic, but ... incorrectly?

Jason  Why are baseball players so fragile these days?  I don't remember so many nagging injuries, DL stints, etc from my early days watching the Pirates, the 1970s.  I remember Rennie Stennet's injury, but that was something of an anomoly.  Are the players goldbricking it for time off?
Jason Mackey

I don't think it's that. I think MLB has made it too easy with the 10- and 15-day ILs. Need a breather? Here. Also, salaries are different now. A short stint on the IL is much easier for teams to stomach than a mega-million investment developing a huge problem, especially when contracts are guaranteed.

Supposedly, Omar Kahn has contacted the Jaguars about obtaining Trevor Lawrence.  What do you think it would take to get him and would you make that trade?  Thanks.
Jason Mackey
12:49
Sounds like -- at least based on what I've seen on social -- that the Jags aren't interested in trading Lawrence. So, it may end up being a moot point.

Jason, For someone that seemed to be pretty well thought of didn'tLyke really out Pitt in a tough spot with the Capel and Narduzzi contracts plus Victory Heights?
Jason Mackey
12:49
Yes, she did. Heather did a lot of good things at Pitt. There's also some bad. And your pointing to it.

Hi Jason, I think the Steelers blew a great opportunity to improve their offense by not hiring Bobby Slowik.  Your thoughts please?
Jason Mackey
12:50
I agree with you. I wish they would grow their coaching staff and add additional offensive perspectives, specifically as they relate to the passing game.

Jason, I think you just touched on it, but doesn't it get lost a little that if the Bucs would have been a major league average team as it relates to fundamentals that they would have been at .500?  Have you heard anything about real efforts to improve in that area?  Thanks.
Jason Mackey
12:51
I've made that point a bunch. Generally I get labeled a shill or something for pointing out that it's not a money-issue relatively to making routine plays or doing things differently within a losing streak. I can't speak on efforts to improve, as it's only the second day of pitchers and catchers workouts. Too early.

Hi Jason, I love how people think just because some one is a free agent they all want to come to Pittsburgh.  I believe if they are above average the last place they would want to come to is Pittsburgh unless they have no other options. If you were a free agent please state your case for wanting to come here.
Jason Mackey

Right. If the Pirates would overpay. Which, ahem, they kinda don't do. Heard from someone on the Fan last night who said they should get Alex Bregman. Before he signed. Why in the world would Bregman do that?

Hi Jason, love your chats.  Would the Steelers prefer Samuel or Kupp in your opinion?  Is it possible they have an interest in getting both of them?  Thank you.
Jason Mackey
1:01
Hi Margie, thank you very much. I think it depends on the price for Kupp. How much money is L.A. willing to eat? As I wrote, I can't imagine they would have any interest at the current price point. But if they price came down, I think he could make sense. I think Samuel fits them better schematically. However, if he wants a long-term extension, I'm not sure that makes a ton of sense for them.

During the Superbowl, the commentators mentioned how hard it was for Siriani to not get into micromanagement and his allowance for his coordinators to coach.  Couldn't Tomlin learn a thing or two from that?
Jason Mackey
1:01
Yes, he could. Tomlin should not be micromanaging the defense.

Jason, was Mike McCarthy hired for this season?
Jason Mackey
1:02
No, I believe he's still available. I also don't know what role he could play with the Steelers.
1:03
OK, everyone. That does it for this week. Thanks so much for the chat. I had a lot of fun. Mailbag next week. Feel free to send questions to jmackey@post-gazette.com. Have a good one!
