Ha. Yeah, sorta. Due to their spending habits, whether it's strategic, simply being frugal or the business of conspiring against them -- leave that for another day -- they do bet a lot on bounce-backs. I think they knew they had to overpay for Chapman. They really didn't for Tellez. A 1B two years removed from 35 homers is gonna make about $3 million. That's just fair market value. I agree they'll ultimately need more from Rowdy, but it's also April 26. I'd like to see more of a sample. Chapman has been really good this season, too, don't forget. But I agree that the perfomance of late hasn't been good enough.

Fill in the blank: Mitch Keller is the no. ___ starter on a contending team. Depending on your answer, worth the contract?
Jason Mackey
12:55
2 or 3. And yes, I think so. The cost of pitching is crazy high these days. Have no issue with them paying Mitch. If he's surrounded by Jared Jones and Paul Skenes, how do you hate anything about that? I can't.

The 6th tackle taken vs the top center, db, or 4th WR. Mistake?
Jason Mackey
12:56
I'm fine with it. Tackle is a premium position. Ton of value there. Hard to disagree with building through the big guys. They need to be able to run the ball and protect the quarterback. They might get the second or third center today. They can also address DB & WR needs.

Would you have preferred Mims?
Jason Mackey
12:57
No. I like the idea that they got someone seemingly a little more NFL-ready. I wasn't as high on Mims as some others.

Time to worry about Mitch?
Jason Mackey
12:58
On April 26 after 3 starts where he pitched to a 3.79 ERA and struck out nearly a batter per inning? Absolutely not.

In your eyes, where is Suwinski’s ceiling? Is their patience with him due to potential or nobody pushing him for playing time? Or both?
Jason Mackey

I see their patience with him as an over-correction. Ha. They platooned him early. I think it took him off-track. He's still not back on. I thought they screwed that up and created a problem that didn't exist. Jack should have been an every-day player all along, and now I think they're trying to help him get back to that. If you look under the hood, there is hard contact. There have been better decisions. He's just had crappy luck with balls falling. If he rides it out, I think he's gonna be fine.

Think the Steelers would have preferred Mims?
Jason Mackey

It sure didn't sound like it from hearing Tomlin & Khan last night. And, yeah, they could be feeding us a line of crap. But I was in the room. Pretty convincing genuine enthusiasm for the guy and him being there at 20.

Wouldn't Hines have been a good hire as the WR coach, he would have taken the diva out of the WR's and taught them how the position should be played.  Plus he's a Georgia icon and #14 would benefit since they are both Georgia alums.

This is like the baseball version of why can't the Pirates hire A.J. Burnett and have him teach all the pitchers how to tell hitters to STFD. Look, guy had a great playing career. With Burnett, he'd make a great spring training instructor. That's an opportunity wasted. With Hines, he's not influenza; you don't hire him and his way of being just seeps in everywhere. Maybe they felt a better fit with someone else. Maybe they didn't want the hire to be about his legacy. I have no idea. But if you could just hire great players and have their traits reach players via osmosis, I think you'd probably see those things more than you do.

Thanks for chatting Jason! Informative and entertaining!

I try my best. I like these. Seems we're trying to catch a new crowd and the Pirates folks want all Pirates, which is great. I get it. But for anyone new, general drill is that I will sit here and answer questions for as long as yinz wanna ask 'em, as long as they're not disrespectful or veering into stuff like politics and religion.

Trubisky, Fields, no Williams in 2028?
Jason Mackey

I don't know why you're so quick to replace 39- or 40-year-old Russell Wilson. Shame, shame.

Any chance the Pirates would move NGon to 1st or at least try him there in AAA?
Jason Mackey
1:06
No. He's waaaaay too short for that. If he came up -- which he might soon, it makes sense -- I think you could see Triolo playing more first or bouncing. But I don't think we're there yet. Triolo has also been very good at 2B. They'd likely be losing something there. Nick might just have to wait.

When might Skenes be called up?  Even for just a bit.  If he falters, just send him down.
Jason Mackey

Was just about to close up. Ha. Around the middle/second week of May. I don't think it's far off. Basically you want to see him clear 5 innings and 80 pitches with Triple-A Indy. Said earlier that I could see May 10 (when he theoretically lines up to pitch) against the Cubs.

Is it really a R&RHOF without Jethro Tull?

Yeah, that's insanity. Love me some JT. Absolutely belongs in the Hall.
