I didn't have a problem with Donny pulling Skenes there. If he would have been at 76 pitches, different story.

Andrew Hiles recently reported the Pirates are behind other major league teams in coaching analytics, ect. How is this possible when we have been told by the Pirates brass for years that instead of the revenue sharing money going into the payroll, the money was being allocated to other places such as these?
Jason Mackey
12:27
You bring up a fine point. And I'm not sure I have a great answer for you. I know they spent a lot this offseason, and it obviously hasn't worked out great. Spend less on analytics, more on players.

Ha! That was the early talk - when he came up the topic of extending him was broached, only to find out they are far apart on the money and it was dropped. Do you think they will try to extend him when the time comes, or does he need to be more consistent?
Jason Mackey
12:28
I don't see an extension here, as I said. If he's a star -- and he might be -- he isn't going to settle for Pirates money. He's going to keep doing this for a couple years and cash in. More accurately, force the Pirates to trade him before he leaves.

Nice to see Henry Davis picking things up. Of course, it's only been a short sprint. Do you think he needs to prove his worth this year to stick or is the leash longer than that?
Jason Mackey
12:29
I don't think he's in danger of getting designated for assignment, if that's what you're asking. I have the same opinion on Henry that I've had. They like him. He has potential. But he has to put it all together, starting with his bat. Right now he's doing that. They're going to give him a chance to keep doing that, too.

My point is that people have this romantic notion that Chuck Noll and or Bill Cowher "didn't put up with the stuff Tomlin puts up with" from players. They did have players that created problems or who were disgruntled players. And Noll and Cowher did put up with them because they were good players. People forget Terry Bradshaw asked to be traded.
Jason Mackey

I don't disagree with you. It's been happening for years.
Agreed
12:36
If David Bednar was from Iowa he'd have been DFA'd long ago. Agreed ?
Jason Mackey
12:37
No, I don't. They paid him a guaranteed amount of money to play for them. The Pirates are cheap. They're going to try and get something out of that contract.

Realistic lineup for the Pirates than can compete? And how quickly can they get there?
Jason Mackey
12:40
They still need pieces. Right now, since you said realistic, it's probably: 1. Cruz, CF; 2. Reynolds, RF; 3. McCutchen, DH; 4. Horwitz, 1B; 5. Canario, LF; 6. Davis, C; 7. Frazier, 2B; 8. Kiner-Falefa, SS; 9. Hayes, 3B.

Now, in the future, you might need to give Bart more ABs at 1B. Don't know what happens with Cutch/Bart, that dynamic. Does Canario stay hot? Nick Gonzales will be back soon. What does that do to 2B?

Then there's (hopefully) adding over the offseason. I just don't know where yet because there's a long time until then.

Who will be the Pirates' rep in the All-Star game? Starting pitcher with a losing record?
Jason Mackey
12:40
Skenes, for sure. I think there's a chance for Cruz. I wouldn't evaluate pitchers based on wins and losses.

How do you rate the play of Tommy Pham? He seems like a good outfielder and he has improved at the plate of late.
Jason Mackey
12:41
It's better. Still not good. He shouldn't be playing every day and hasn't been. Overall the signing was a poor one by Ben Cherington.

I doubt it's just you with the home run derby rather than extra innings thing. I was glad to see it as a novelty but no way would I want it in place of baseball. I'd guess the "advantage" is that you get the game finished much sooner than you do playing the normal way.
Jason Mackey
12:41
That's OK. With the pitch clock, I have zero issue with the average length of game.

What is the relationship between O'Neil Cruz and English? He always has an interpreter for interviews but I see him in the dugout evidently exchanging a few words with US players.
Jason Mackey
12:42
He speaks enough. Like a lot of Latin players, he's not comfortable enough with it on camera, likely thinking he'll just get made fun of. So, he can converse with teammates. He would just rather use an interpreter.
12:43
OK, folks. Looks like that'll do it for this week. Thanks so much for participating. Have an awesome weekend!
