Jason, speaking of underrated bands (OK, nobody actually was in this sports chat, but humor me), what about Spoon? Not a jam band, but many mighty fine tunes and some interesting musical diversity. Do I Have to Talk You Into It? If one can't get lucky with this song, one may not have a fighting chance.....
Jason Mackey
12:37
Have not listened to much Spoon, sorry.

I live near Boston. A common criticism of Ben Cherrington's time as Red Sox GM is that he was more interested in hoarding prospects than in winning games and that got him fired. Do you have any opinion about that and if so what it might mean for the Pirates? If this is the case with him he seems like Bob Nutting's dream GM.
Jason Mackey
12:38
I've read the same, specifically in Homegrown. I think it's silly to apply a label like that to someone. And, let's be honest here: He wouldn't be wrong for doing that here. How many trades are the Pirates going to make where they send a bunch of prospects out? Probably not a ton, right? They need to keep prospects and develop them? That said, nothing is cut and dried, black and white. Which is why I think it's a silly label to apply.

To use his word of the week, the Steelers have been "smashed" in their last three playoff games.  We know Tomlin hates someone questioning him or saying anything negative about him (a reason all of his assistant coaches are incompetent "yes" men).  Think about this...you can't get "smashed" in the playoffs if you can't make the playoffs.  Another brilliant strategy by Coach Cliché??
Jason Mackey
12:39
I don't understand your question. It just seems like a forum to complain about Mike Tomlin. I mean ... they got smashed. He's not wrong. And so Canada is a "yes man?" Huh? Have we been in meetings and know how those conversations have gone? I will agree he and they haven't been good. Fair to say. But, man. The negativity with this stuff and where it goes is really something.

Jason, I wonder if, the ever-magical word in the sports world is "if", the OL would be better had they kept Matt Feiler, Kelvin Beechum (both of whom still play) and drafted Creed Humphrey instead of Friermuth two years ago? I like Friermuth but think the OL was the greater need then...
Jason Mackey
12:40
Hindsight is always 20/20, but you're not wrong to question their recent drafts. They haven't been good enough, especially at the top.

Jason, Happy Friday!  Who is on first for the Bucs in 2023?
Jason Mackey
12:41
I don't think that player is currently in the organization. I think they'll sign someone.

Did you get your tics today for Dead and Co final tour show in June?
Jason Mackey
12:41
Did not. I might go, but I don't believe it's the last and am honestly not hugely into Dead & Co. Too slow for me.

Jason who do you think catches 1st steeler td? I say Zach Gentry week 13
Jason Mackey
12:41
Chase Claypool this week. Mark it down.

12:42
The glory days of Pittsburgh sports are dead and buried. No more championships or even winning seasons. Correct ?
Jason Mackey
12:42
No, I don't think so.

They say we can't fire Tomlin after one bad year, but the Eagles fired Andy Reid after he went 4-12. What's the difference?
Jason Mackey
12:42
The owners of the teams. Would you rather have the Rooneys or whomever owns the Eagles? (I honestly don't know.) I would take the Rooneys.

Do you think pens power play will right itself. Seemed odd it couldn't get going against the lowly desert dwellers
Jason Mackey
12:43
I thought the power play looked excellent. Two goals, snapping the puck around. Did we watch the same game? Now the penalty kill on the other hand ...

I dont understand why you think Roberto Perez should be signed to catch next year.   I understand he's a bridge to the young guys but he's failed to make it thru 3 of the last 4 years due to injuries.  Isn't there someone better out there?
Jason Mackey
12:44
There might be, but I think the Pirates are operating with limited resources, I think they could get him cheap, and I think he's a really smart catcher the pitching staff likes and trusts. He also would be a good mentor to younger guys like Endy, Henry and Blake Sabol, whomever emerges.
Why not ?
12:44
Interesting story about the "criminal" behavior that Art Rooney engaged in. Harmless fun seemingly and a different era certainly. When is the story about Bob Nutting's much more serious, much more criminal behavior (like the BILLIONS of dollars he's embezzled from MLB, taxpayers and fans) coming out ?
Jason Mackey
12:46
I'm not about to be accused of avoiding this question, but I pushed it through to emphasize that we have covered Nutting and the Pirates more critically than anyone. Revenue sharing money from MLB is not publicly available, nor would anyone share it ever, under any circumstances. Generally you don't write stories saying someone is a criminal without incontrovertible proof. Kind of a big thing.

Look to supplement….. does that mean low cost dumpsters like VanMeter, Chang, Alford, Godoy, Allen, etc…. Or will we see a better quality of free agent in the Russell Martin and Francisco Liriano range?
Jason Mackey
12:47
It won't be the latter, at least in the important cases (1B, SP, RP). Not sure I would go Martin or Liriano either. Probably look somewhere in the middle.

hi Jason, I think we can all agree that the Steelers have started off poorly. For me it’s not the worst thing, though frustrating, I think there are clear benefits to it. One of which is obviously draft position. With that being said what are positions of need for the Steelers. Looking at their roster, I feel like it’s not an awful roster overall when healthy. Obviously there are certain areas of need but it’s possible some players have just been playing below their level this year as well. Thanks as always, and hope you’re doing well, and enjoying the new role.
Jason Mackey
12:48
Thanks, Zack. Don't know how new it is as opposed to the folding in of an old one, but ... I would say offensive line, for sure. Probably defensive line and linebacker, too. Of course, geez, thinking through this more, I guess you don't get to 1-4 without serious needs. Would not complain about DB help either. But I still would start with the offensive line.

Wow. Yinzers are FREAKING out on 5 weeks in to the season and wanting anything not tied down fired or traded. I think if TJ returns and guys get healthy they have a chance to be much more competitive. This doom and gloom stuff is over the top. Maybe we need to relax. Agreed ?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Yeah, I wouldn't blow everything up at this point. It's a lot. Do I think they're a playoff team with T.J. back? No, I don't. And i question whether Canada is the answer. But I had this discussion with Chris Carter this week, and I think it's tricky to figure out what to do. Fire him in-season and potentially stunt Pickett's growth? Or let him work through? Bottom line, I think there needs to be some measure of patience here, which seems to be the moon to Steelers fans right now.

12:50
Hey Jason, do you know if Suwinski or Endy are learning how to play first base?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Endy has, Jack has not. Jack is too good of an outfielder. You could see Endy over there. He has also worked at C, 2B and in the OF. Still kinda TBD on a position.
MjB
12:51
There is no way Cruz remains at shortstop.  While it was a small sample, it was obvious that he is not consistent enough at the position.  He has a rocket for an arm, so do not waste him at first.  Based on that, which OF position would you place him?  Cobra 2?
Jason Mackey
12:52
I would have him in RF. Take advantage of his arm. Bigger fan of Reynolds or Bae in LF. ... That said, I'm OK giving him another shot. I don't know if he can or can't, honestly. Physically, he has all the tools. Also agree that 17 errors is far too many. But what's the harm in letting him try? Especially right now, I'm OK with it.

12:52
Coach Tomlin should of done something / replaced Mitch at the by-week instead of half-ass halfway thru the Jets game. Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
12:52
Would that really have changed much? I don't think so, personally.
Marc from Germany
12:52
Hi J! After suffering thru the steelers first 5 games, it was soulsoothing to watch the Pens opener and a bunch of guys looking really good at what they're doing. Do you think there is one specific thing the steelers org could and should learn from the pens org? (Please don't let it be Playoffs)
Jason Mackey
12:54
Hi Marc, it's so hard to compare sports, honestly. I've thought about this and don't have much. Maybe being OK with taking risks? I don't know. I'd like to see the Steelers open it up more. Or maybe admitting mistakes. GMJR made plenty. Give him credit, he usually did something to try and fix it, sometimes too much.

Steelers fans complaining about their team make me laugh. Imagine being a Jets fan for a minute. People here are extremely spoiled
Jason Mackey
12:54
Or ... fans of the baseball team. Different standards, for sure.
