Hey everyone. Thanks for finding my weekly sports chat. We'll get started shortly!
Luis
12:04
Hey Jason, not sports but curious if you are a fan of the Cause? I’ve seen them several times and really enjoy them.
Jason Mackey
12:04
And away we go ... Absolutely, Luis. And thanks for the non-sports question. But I'm a huge Cause fan. Believe some of the band members read this chat. Haven't seen them in a bit, which is something I really need to rectify. They're incredible. If you haven't, definitely go.

Jason, with all humility aside, I am truly deserving of all the accolades heading my way recently.
Jason Mackey
12:05
You've been great, Geno. Keep it up.
The Other TJ
12:05
Jason, I could not have presented a better case that I am the proverbial "washed" than my first two game tapes, correct?
Jason Mackey
12:06
Jarry was OK in Montreal. But, yeah. The two home games have stunk. Also don't know if I'm ready to proclaim him washed, but it hasn't been good.
The Dude

Did the Steelers make a run at Amari Cooper? Looks like he was available for about a 3rd round pick.
Jason Mackey
12:06
They've checked on basically every other receiver, so it wouldn't surprise me. I would've happily given up a third for Cooper.

Can the Sports and Exhibition Authority leverage Bob Nutting to spend more on MLB payroll when the new lease comes due in 2030?
Jason Mackey
12:08
Potentially. Remains an interesting point of debate. They could theoretically try to craft a competition clause or something in the lease forcing them to be more competitive. But what are the grounds for that? How do you determine competitive? There are details to work out, but I obviously would have no issue with it. What worries me is this: What if the Pirates say screw it? The SEA/Pittsburgh doesn't want us. We wanna go. I have a hard time believing MLB would be mad about something like the Pirates moving to Nashville or the Pacific Northwest or any other market the sport has been looking to serve. So, it's a tricky question.
Kyle
12:08
Jason, if offered a warm sixer for TJ, I should pull the trigger, no?  And yes, I know all about the sell high concept, but I'm not sure this sh&t is going on an upward trajectory anytime soon. Your thoughts, if any?
Jason Mackey
12:09
Why would anyone offer anything for Tristan Jarry right now? I guess if they think they can fix him, but you watched last night, I watched last night, we both saw last season. Are you making that gamble for close to $6 million? Can't say I would.
Benson DuBois
12:09
Does MLB really care if the Pirates are competitive?
Jason Mackey
12:10
I think they care if there's money left on the table. Which would be the result of them stinking and thus doing nothing with them. Nobody would want the Pirates to leave. The best solution is simply to stay here, in a great baseball market. I also think that's attainable. The Pirates have a lot going right for them. But they need to make better decisions and spend more.

Hi Jason, any idea what Justin Fields’ attitude will be if/when Russell Wilson starts on Sunday?
Jason Mackey
12:11
Probably not thrilled, but everything I've seen out of Justin Fields tells me he'll at least understand. It's a business. They all get that. I don't expect Fields to like it, but I expect him to respect it and be a good team player. He'll almost assuredly keep working and waiting for his next opportunity. Fields is a good kid.

No question for you Jason.  After watching the historic Penguins game last night, I hope people realize how fortunate we have been to watch two of the greatest to ever play the game.   Congrats to Evgeni and Sid!
Jason Mackey
12:11
I hope, too. And I think they do. Incredible stuff.

In honor of October, who are some of the biggest horror movie buffs in the big 3 Pittsburgh clubhouses?
Jason Mackey
12:12
Ha. I'll be honest you with you: I can't think of a single one. Maybe that's because I'm just not that into horror movies and don't know the right questions to ask.

Hey Jason.  Do you think the Steelers may trade for Tyler Boyd?  From what I understand, things haven’t been working for him as well as he thought they would.  Thanks.
Jason Mackey
12:13
I can't say I have any intel that they're going to do it. But it would make a ton of sense. That's the type of player they need. Veteran voice. Should be able to fit the cap hit. Great suggestion. Guess we just need to know if he's available.

Jason, What's up with the Steelers playing Minkah 30-40 yards down the field pre snap. Imagine Derrick Henry with a 20 yard head start run over him like Josh Allen did in last years playoff game. Wagner, Shell, and Troy were never positioned that way. No wonder he hasn't had turnovers for 2 years. It's just like taking your other impact player TJ and just let him cover, not rush. This is high school defense.
Jason Mackey
12:14
It's been this way for a bit (not excusing it). Think it's more of a trend around the NFL, but it has obviously -- and sizably -- cut into his playmaking. I'm with you. I wish they were doing more stuff with him near the line of scrimmage.

Hi Jason, have you heard how Cameron Johnston’s knee rehab  is progressing?
Jason Mackey
12:15
About as expected. Nothing crazy either way. We see him around the facility from time to time. In good spirits. Just such a shame it happened.

12:15
Do you think the steelers have any interest in trading a lower round pick to get Diontae Johnson back or did he burn down the bridge on his out???
Jason Mackey
12:15
I can't imagine they have any interest in that. Maybe didn't burn the entire bridge, but there wasn't a lot left.
Gene
12:15
Any word on Patterson’s injury and when he might return?
Jason Mackey
12:16
Believe it's an ankle, and he was limited yesterday.

Hi Jason…As we’ve seen in the playoffs, even if a lower level salary team makes it there, they are ousted pretty quickly. How can Bob Nutting even begin to justify what he puts on the field with a literal joke of money behind it?
Jason Mackey
12:17
I'm not defending the Pirates. But the Guardians haven't exactly been ousted quickly. I also have no issue with what the Rays, Brewers, Royals or others have done. The Pirates are never going to be the Mets, Yankees or Dodgers. That's an MLB problem. But the fact that the Pirates can't be more like Cleveland, Tampa or Milwaukee, that's a Nutting problem. And I don't have a good answer for why the mediocrity is being allowed to continue.

Is Drew Allar better than Justin Fields right now?
Jason Mackey
12:18
No, he is not. But I like what I've seen out of Allar this season, especially against USC. Kid battled his tail off.

Mr Mackey, loved the kicker's article. Way too early, but is last nights Pen's game typical of what to expect going forward? Some interesting/exciting hockey interspersed with some very disappointing/embarrassing play, all within the same game? With the Steelers playing similarly should I stock up on aspirin for the next several months? As a sports fan(atic) I have to follow. Thanks for your time.
Jason Mackey
12:19
Thanks, Phil. Very much so. They're gonna entertain. They're also gonna make you crazy. Suppose I should be glad I no longer have to write running game stories. Ha. But if they get good goaltending, I maintain that I think the Penguins can  get to the playoffs and advance.

Enjoy your chats…a lot! My question is when did the draft philosophy of taking the best player available stop. It seems they more look at position of need first. For example, two tackles taken first in the last 2 years, when “better” athletes were available.
Jason Mackey
12:21
Thanks, John. I'm not sure it's ever been binary, if that makes sense. Like solely the best player. There's always context. Also, it's tough for everyone to reach a consensus on the BPA. Steelers had Fautanu very high on their board. They also had a need at OT. Why not marry the two? In other words, if there's a edge rusher there, they're probably not gonna take that guy because of Watt & Highsmith; they're going to allocate their resources differently. I think a version of that has always been true, no?

I apologize for asking you a poorly worded question two weeks ago. What I meant to ask was this: after Pirates management lied to our faces about Rowdy and IKF, how can fans, journalists, or anyone else believe anything that they say ever again?
