Jason Mackey's sports chat 04.12.24

Oops I was wrong
12:25
Was pleasantly surprised with the last Bailey Falter outing …is this soft-contact method reproducible ?
Jason Mackey
12:25
I don't see it, honestly. Wish I did. We've seen him occasionally look solid. Twice, I think. But there have been too many slipups or mistakes for me to magically think that, based on six innings, they're going to disappear.
TB 12
12:25
Jason, I'm just surmising here, but the avocado "nonsense" likely stems from the fact that your average, informed yinzer is not a fan of mine, to say the least. Just my guess.  Great start to your all sports chat, though. Take care. Tom
Jason Mackey
12:26
Thanks, Tom. The TB12 comments have undoubtedly given it the electric start you're referencing.
Rowdy
12:26
Jason, I've been one heck of an addition to date. Your concurrence is assumed. Thanks, and take care.
Jason Mackey
12:26
Yep, big fan of what you've brought. Love the personality, mmmkkk? (Rowdy calls me Mr. Mackey from South Park.)
Chuck
12:26
Isn’t a shame in a very winnable division that are owner is too cheap to spend at least Breweries money, yes we are doing great now , but you know it won’t last
Jason Mackey
12:27
I understand the sentiment. As I've said, wish they would have done more for the starting rotation. That said, would anybody be as down as Chuck here if they just brought up Skenes? If that happens by mid-May, I'm not sure everything would be ruined because of Bob Nutting.
Van Slyke
12:28
Jason, what's with our center fielders not knowing that every ball is theirs, until informed otherwise?  That is Baseball 101, no?
Jason Mackey
12:28
Yeah, that has become a problem. I get Taylor came in late, but Tarrik Brock and Shelton need to have a talk with the OF about ... well, talking. A lot of the defensive miscues with this team can't continue if they wanna win.
Tristan
12:28
Jason, am I trade bait this off season?  On a related corollary, why cannot I put it all together? The mentals?
Jason Mackey
12:30
This is a fascinating question, not only for me but Kyle Dubas this offseason. Matt Vensel wrote a piece about how he would run it back. I'm not sure I would. But it would depend on offers that I get for Jarry. If they stink, then, yeah, maybe they  do run it back. However, if I can unload that contract and get something back, then give Ned a larger role, I would absolutely consider it.
Not sure why it hasn't all come together. I think the mentals are part of it, sure. Health hasn't cooperated. Been a few different things.
Henry
12:30
I am a bust, waste of a pick
Jason Mackey
12:31
I wholeheartedly disagree with this one. Henry is gonna be just fine. He's in a slump. I promise you, they do happen.
Paul
12:31
Jason, soon I will be allowed to blow guys away in the 5th inning, yes?  And soon after that, yinzers will get to view this questionable stash live and in person, yes?
Jason Mackey
12:32
Soon, five. But not yet. Believe Paul will go four in his next one. Still think by mid-May we see the stache.
Prince Bob
12:32
Sorry it the non baseball question wasn't the Pens. I've never been big on hockey. The ACC has long been the dream at U Conn but Boston College has always blocked any ACC invites for U Conn because they want all of New England as their exclusive territory.
Jason Mackey
12:34
Yeah, well, times they are a changin'. Ha. The ACC should be looking to buttress itself in any way possible. Big Ten ain't going anywhere. SEC ain't going anywhere. Pac-12 is done. Life rafts are basically the Big 12 and ACC, right?

Jason, as a former high school baseball star, what do you think my chances are of making it big at the next level? My freshman year starts next fall and I throw 75 off the mound.
Jason Mackey
12:35
If you're referring to me as a former high school baseball star, I'm afraid I've got some bad news. Ha. ... Also, I'm not worried about your velocity. Can you pitch? Can you throw strikes? This feeds into a larger discussion/pet peeve of mine with pitching.
M. Bunting
12:35
Jason, admit it, you are blown away by all that I've brought to the proverbial table?
Jason Mackey
12:36
Hey, you've been really good. Was talking about that with someone last night. What you've done for Malkin, Rakell, etc. Love the way you play, the energy, the disruptiveness, all of it. Sorely needed around here. Keep it up.
Livvy Dunne
12:36
Hi Jason, when are you going to do a story about me?
Jason Mackey
12:38
Ha. Maybe in the summer? I do think it's a fascinating dynamic. Talked to Paul about it some -- challenges of a relationship like theirs. It's also an athlete's private life. If he or she is willing, great. I think there's a certain part of Paul that doesn't wanna go there, and I respect that. Not gonna stalk Livvy and be weird about anything, hence why I would prefer to go through the athlete I'm covering -- out of respect. But again, I do think it would be interesting to chat about supporting Paul, learning the baseball world, what she thinks about baseball, etc.
Caitlyn
12:38
Jason, which side of the argument do you reside: Long distance bombers like me and Steph have revolutionized B ball, or absolutely ruined it?
Jason Mackey
12:40
Very much the revolutionized part. I ... have a tough time seeing the other side. What's my other option, watching George Mikan? If you can shoot it, do it. Love seeing what Caitlin Clark has done for Iowa and women's hoops. It's never been more popular, as it should be. I just hope it keeps going.

12:42
Jason, I am not sure if you get much time to watch college baseball but what is your take on where JJ Wetherholt ends up going in the draft?  He has just returned from injury but is a terrific pure hitter.
Jason Mackey
12:43
Have not been able to watch a ton. Just know what I read on BA. Have been impressed the little I've seen of Wetherholt. I also think it's very early. Shoot, at this time a couple years ago, pretty sure the Pirates were taking Kumar Rocker or Jack Leiter. Anything can happen.
Brad13____
12:45
Jason, Godzilla or King Kong?
Jason Mackey
12:46
I'm going King Kong -- likely smarter, primate brain more adaptable, better reach. I like my chances.
Prince Bob
12:46
I don't know how blackballing a school from a conference works but with the ACC on somewhat shaky ground being in the New York City market seems a good idea and U Conn kind of puts them there. I don't know if there's a way around BC's block or mot.
Jason Mackey
12:47
I don't know either. I can't see how, in this day and age of college athletics, that something like that would even be allowed.
Jonathan
12:47
Hey Jason, at what point do we start praising Oscar Marin a little bit? Not even just yourself, but as a collective. Seems like he has done a great job honestly. Haines I understand the frustration over the last while, but Marin seems solid.
Jason Mackey
12:49
I think it's a fair discussion to have with both guys. ... Like, can we say they're not total morons? They're not perfect. They'd be the first to tell you that. But I think way too often, we all incorrectly correlate poor performance with coaching. ... That being said, some of the performance has been bad, in part because of bad players, and it's really hard to suss out fact from fiction.

Cutch CANNOT be your Number Three hitter!   No, I get the respect, but he just cannot.  He is a sixth or seventh hitter in the lineup.  Why is he still batting third?
Jason Mackey
12:50
Cutch has yet to hit third this year. Are you watching old Pirates games on SNP?
Sully
12:50
Jason, will my burst of redemption continue if we just miss the playoffs?  Or has this little run given me more time in the eyes of your average yinzer, regardless?
Jason Mackey
12:51
It should. I can't see how Sullivan is going anywhere. I think they need to make some tweaks. Have to fix the power play. Some third-period restrain while protecting a lead wouldn't hurt. But Sullivan has a roster that isn't deep enough and some stars who tend to play high-event hockey. There's often only so much he can do.

Michael A. Taylor was hitting .429 when Derek Shelton decided to rest him for 3 days less than 2 weeks into the season. Since returning to the lineup, Taylor is 1 for 8 with 4 strikeouts and 3 groundouts. Is Shelton so obsessed with resting players that he's willing to douse water on a hot bat?
