They're probably just testing to see how desperate the OF market is. What we really learned is the White Sox are semi-serious about adding another bat

If Chi Chi+ can get Ozuna, shouldn't the Mariners step in with Paxton?
Jeff Sullivan
10:53
well, Chi Chi+ hasn't gotten Ozuna yet
but yes, Paxton would make sense
Pete
10:54
Is Votto and the next best player on his team represent the biggest gap in talent on any single team?
Jeff Sullivan
10:54
It's cheating, but it's probably Trout -- Simmons/Richards/Calhoun
Sam
10:55
How would you construct SFs current lineup? Span slot in at the top? Or would you push his contact skills maybe a bit lower in lineup?
Jeff Sullivan
10:55
I like him just fine at leadoff, presuming he's healthy and normal

Do teams with set positions (five or six starters, three good outfielders, etc.) but needs elsewhere ever sign a player to create a logam in order to trade from it soon after? Seems like a strategy that would make sense, and has probably happened, but can't think of any. For example, if the Mariners had signed Kazmir, then traded Paxton/Walker for a comparably valued position player. Or something.
Jeff Sullivan
10:56
Teams would probably only do that if they had a really strong feeling the next transaction was right around the corner. They won't get themselves deliberately into a potential problem if they don't have a plan for a way out
10:57
Right now the Dodgers probably have too many starters. It's hard to see how this is going to shake out
Alex
10:57
Who do you think wins a World Series first: Mets, Cubs, or Astros?
Jeff Sullivan
10:58
I guess Cubs, since right now I think they're the best team and they're built to be strong for a while

I don't remember where I saw it on Twitter (always a good sign), but I heard Justin Upton may be considering a 1 year contract. Isn't that kind of bonkers for what it says about the market?
Jeff Sullivan
10:59
Weird exactly how we got here, but next year's outfield market is bad, and Upton is young, so it would be basically just buying time
You do get the sense there was a run on pitchers that too many teams got swept up in

Dipoto has repeatedly said that the Mariners are done with significant moves. Seems like an odd thing to say. If something fell into his lap, as already happened with Iwakuma, he would obviously pull the trigger. I can't imagine that he's done exploring trades either.
Jeff Sullivan
11:00
Obviously you can't predict surprise offers or free-agent availabilities, but I doubt Dipoto is planning anything else.
Raindog
11:00
Jeff, would a trade of out of options Dylan Bundy for a Colorado outfielder be crazy for the O's, crazy for the Rockies, or just a fascinating bet?
Jeff Sullivan
11:00
Fascinating bet
Manny
11:01
Lets say that David Price chooses not to opt out. How good will that contract look in years 4-7?
Jeff Sullivan
11:01
Presumably not good, if he chose not to opt out
Are you asking as if he were great, but didn't opt out for some reason?
Then that's just a weird hypothetical!

Part of the D-Backs plan this offseason, specifically trading Inciarte, seems to hinge on Yasmany Tomas being good. What is your opinion on how likely that is to happen? ZIPS hates him, FWIW, but he's only had one year.
Jeff Sullivan
11:02
I don't like him. I don't like him at all
Really unimpressed me last season
Q-Ball
11:02
Will we ever see a major-league deal with a mid-season opt-out clause? Could it be tied to team record?
Jeff Sullivan
11:03
No, you'll never see that. And no one wants to be a midseason free-agent anyhow. But I feel like there have been contracts with mutual understandings that a player will be traded midseason

Pat Mitsch threw a championship Game 7 no-hitter in Taiwan in October. Baseball is baseball and that's awesome.

Seems like Cruz isn't going to be one of Dipoto's many moves. Do you think that's more because Dipoto values him as a player or doesn't want the backlash?
Jeff Sullivan
11:04
Dipoto wants to win in 2016. Cruz is good enough. The outfield market is flooded and the DH market is limited. Not really much of anything to do
BS
11:04
Is it possible that JUpton and YC are still on the market is because teams see some dog in them?
Jeff Sullivan
11:04
I do think there's some negative perception about Upton. Not as much Cespedes
Jesse
11:04
Which teams are having the most peculiar offseasons so far?
Jeff Sullivan
11:04
I never really know what the Rockies are up to
Sean P
11:05
Think it might make any sense for the Cubs to pursue Jonathan Lucroy?
Jeff Sullivan
11:05
They don't need him
Strotation
11:07
Not a Marcus Stroman question, but an Astros one: % chance Lance McCullers ends up being the best pitcher in Houston's rotation this season? Keuchel is great but seems like McCullers has the strikeout stuff to dominate, whereas Dallas' K/9 can reasonably be expected to drop a bit based on his SwStrk%, no?
Jeff Sullivan
11:07
I don't know, 20%? I'm not yet to the point where I really trust McCullers' command or stamina. Real exciting pitcher, but Keuchel is durable and polished
