How overrated is Kris Bryant?

Worse: the strikeout run to first rule, or the off the base you are out after replay? Both are both are understood rules.
Jeff Sullivan
10:21
The uncaught-third-strike rule makes zero sense to begin with
The slide-off-the-base rule is just an unintended consequence of replay review. Penalizing overslides makes sense when they're egregious

10:22
Do you see the Red Sox trading JBJ? Seems like Mookie could be fine in CF and they can then take advantage of the cratered market for corner guys while picking up something of value for Bradley.
Jeff Sullivan
10:22
I don't expect it, but I could certainly see it
I'm sure Dombrowski will want to find some more power
Sharp
10:22
Should the Nats be content with Wieters/Severino or should they try to deal for Flowers/Realmuto/literally anyone who can swing a bat and catch a ball better than Wieters.
Jeff Sullivan
10:22
They need a catcher
Gnats
10:22
Welcome back. Did you record an EW pod in between these chats? Do you think last night was Harper's last in a Nats uniform?
Jeff Sullivan
10:23
Recorded a pod just this morning. Harper will stick around for 2018
TJ
10:23
Whoever actually winds up winning the AL MVP will be the one who performs worse this series because baseball, right?
Jeff Sullivan
10:23
MVP ballots were due before the start of the playoffs
Oh, but upon a second reading I think I see what you mean
Yes! Baseball!

Puns are the best form of comedy don’t fight me on this
Jeff Sullivan
10:23
Well that's just too far in the other direction

10:25
What do you think the cardinals should do this offseason?
Jeff Sullivan
10:25
Build a bullpen

Doesn't seem like people have been complaining about the length of these playoffs games. They have been long, but entertaining and dramatic, so I guess people don't care that it take four hours?
Jeff Sullivan
10:25
Yes, MLB has gotten lucky that so many of these games have been close, because they've all also taken forever to finish
10:26
The per-9 game duration right now is the longest in playoff history by a decent margin
Andrew
10:26
What can the Nats do this offseason to meaningfully improve other than getting healthy and running it back?
Jeff Sullivan
10:26
Find a catcher. Add another reliever or two. Win the division and try it again
Marc
10:28
If you were given the choice, would you run Gray or Sabathia in Game Three?
Jeff Sullivan
10:28
Probably Gray by a hair but it's very close

I saw that the specific sequence in the 5th - IBB, dropped 3rd strike, catcher interference, and HBP - had literally never happened before in any game.  In fact, only 5 times ever had all 4 events occurred in a game, and even then never in a single half-inning.

MLB's official take seems to think the backswing interference call was wrong: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/umpires/feature.jsp?feature=call5 (backswing interference rule is same as backswing contact with ball rule)

I am not a Nationals fan.  I love baseball.  I've experienced heartbreak in life and sports.  I sincerely feel terrible for their team.

Presumably Quintana's 12 pitches won't stop him from starting game one. Would you start either of Lester or Arrieta on 3 days rest in g2, or give Lackey a turn or two through the Dodgers order?
Jeff Sullivan
10:31
Lester threw 55 pitches on Wednesday. I'd be inclined to let him start Game 2, with Lackey prepared to piggyback if it seems like Lester is wearing down early

Do you think there's a certain player skill profile that performs worse in the playoffs not because of choking but because their performance is disproportionately good against bad pitching and poor against good pitching (the "mistake hitter", or just poor vs elite velocity, for example), that might make a player's outcomes decline more than typical in the postseason?
Jeff Sullivan
10:32
The industry, at least, seems to be of the belief that having power pitches is better in October than being a command/control guy
10:33
As far as hitting goes, I don't see a real edge for contact hitters *or* for power hitters. I'm not convinced there's an actual skillset that makes a guy better against good pitchers than somebody else
Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe

My coworker just asked me what pitcher do I think of when I think of a guy who just throws meatballs that are hammered for dingers. We both wrote down our answers and they were both Ubaldo Jimenez. Perception is reality, right?
Jeff Sullivan
10:33
Ubaldo Jimenez shout-out
Marc
10:35
Why is Gray the least likely starter to succeed against the Astro's lineup? Hitter vs. Pitcher tendencies?
Jeff Sullivan
10:35
I think it's just flipping a coin, with a slight preference for recent results
Jerry Layne's Terrible Zone
10:36
Can we talk about how bad Jerry Layne's zone was last night? Especially on Kintzler?
