They need pitching something terrible. You can kind of squint and see some potential building on the position-player side. The pitching side needs some Kluberization
10:48
A pitcher might suddenly emerge seemingly overnight, and the Royals could badly use that kind of story. A few of that kind of story
pelkey
10:50
Is inciarte, newcomb, and the pitching prospect of Cleveland's choice close for Kluber? How much more do you think? Also, genuinely sad Carson is leaving.
Jeff Sullivan
10:51
I could actually see something here, given a quality pitching prospect. Improves the Indians' team-control situation without causing the team to take too large of a step backward
10:52
But then from the Braves' side, you're adding and subtracting at the same time. Which isn't the best thing to do for a team looking to stay in the hunt. This is why the Indians make for a tricky trade partner
5 Run Homer
10:52
What kind of return could Marcus Stroman fetch in a trade?
Jeff Sullivan
10:53
He's intriguing enough to bring the Blue Jays a reasonable haul, but I think his is a case you reevaluate in July. Lots, lots more upside potential there
Stroman's trade value goes through the roof if he starts to convert some of his stuff into more strikeouts

Soooo... when will Mike Elias be calling you about rebuilding the Baltimore Orioles?

I find the Yankees search for a starting pitcher interesting.  On one hand, they need an ace and, it seems, Kluber, Grienke and Paxton may be in play.  On the other hand, they may not be able to get an ace w/o giving up more than they want out of their farm...and go the FA route (Corbin, Keuchel, etc.)  What do you think happens?
Jeff Sullivan
10:54
One of both

what's the best fit for Kuechel? i'm a bit surprised i haven't heard any chatter about him going to philly
Jeff Sullivan
10:55
The offseason is early yet
10:57
Based on nothing, I could see him ending up in DC

I seem to remember you being on the Jordan Luplow hype train as well. Is it wrong to be irrationally excited he got traded to Cleveland?
Jeff Sullivan
10:59
I think he was a good get, for sure. Still have to make sure he doesn't get buried, but he deserves at least 450 plate appearances. Pretty good eye, runs well. Better environment for him to convert his modest power into more dingers
11:00
Could turn into one of those quiet across-the-board positive contributors

When do you suspect trades/FA signings will heat up?
Jeff Sullivan
11:00
Could see a trade of significance or two before the holiday, but for the most part, after next week

Where do I end up?

Do you think that the Orioles are able to conduct a bad contract swap to move Davis' 92 million remaining.  What contracts come to mind?
Jeff Sullivan
11:02
Woof
11:03
If you pay Davis down, then, I guess, there's about $60 million left for the Rockies on Desmond/Shaw
Wouldn't be the worst thing to try Davis in a better hitting environment, where the ball doesn't break as much

Dombrowski is going to shell out for Kimbrel despite his inability to go multiple innings and his likelihood of total combustion in high leverage playoffs spots, right?
Jeff Sullivan
11:04
the Red Sox won the World Series

Serious question time, we've watched these rebuilders (Cin, SD, ect) accumulate talent for awhile now and do you know if waiting for rivals in their division to show weakness, like the Cubs have, has any influence on the timing of their first big FA/trade moves?
Jeff Sullivan
11:05
I don't think it has direct influence, but in reality, rebuilders know they're accumulating for the future, while teams who are good in the present often have to invest more long-term resources into the short-term to stay competitive
11:06
So the Cubs were always going to decline from their peak. Same with the Dodgers. Rebuilding teams bank on that
KD
11:06
Thoughts on Today's Game ballot?  Who do you think should be in and what do you think will actually happen)?
Jeff Sullivan
11:06
That's one of the reasons we hired Jay Jaffe. I have zero opinions on this
Mandy is 92% Fresh
11:06
What would Sal Perez fetch in a trade?   For reference, he has 4 years and about $48 million left on his contract.
Jeff Sullivan
11:07
I know you're just asking as a hypothetical, but I can't even entertain it. The Royals aren't trading Salvador Perez. The Royals aren't even trading Whit Merrifield. It just doesn't seem to be how they operate

11:07
Do you think that Russell Martin to the Astros makes sense if Toronto eats some salary? It seems like Martin fits the mold of an Astros catcher.
Jeff Sullivan
11:07
I think he could be a backup option for them, for sure
11:08
All right, I need to get rolling. Post-chat podcast to record
So thank you everybody for hanging out, and I'm sorry for what I didn't or couldn't address. We won't do it next week because of the holiday break, but until whenever we chat again, be well and have great days
