I embrace the idea of the Yankees once again looking like a totally hateable superteam
10:25
Baseball has been missing that
JD Martinez
10:25
Who are potential "mystery teams" for me?
Jeff Sullivan
10:25
If anything, I think you're already being connected to more teams than is reasonable
Sleepy
10:25
In terms of 2018 WAR, the best player traded this offseason will be...
Jeff Sullivan
10:25
I guess Manny Machado
10:26
with a 40% chance of Chris Archer
Scott
10:26
Is trading for Machado enough to put the Giants in wild card contention?
Jeff Sullivan
10:26
Not on its own, no

The Twins tried earnestly to deal Dozier last offseason. Does it make sense for them to try again this winter?
Jeff Sullivan
10:26
I don't think it does anymore. You don't do that after a playoff season
Rob
10:27
Astros stock piling relievers and now seem to have a glut.  You think they have a trade coming (Hand/Britton?)
Jeff Sullivan
10:27
I don't think Britton is their guy, but a consolidation trade wouldn't shock me in the least
Brendan
10:27
If Machado is traded to the White Sox, what are their chances at extending him?
Jeff Sullivan

1%

Where’s Wednesday and Friday’s EW pods?
Jeff Sullivan
10:28
Just recorded one pre-chat and will record another post-chat. Couldn't feasibly record any podcasts from the winter meetings
James
10:28
Is the Padres' system deep enough to acquire Yelich without dealing Tatis or Gore?
Jeff Sullivan
10:28
Yep
Vincent Vega
10:29
Best/worst signing of the winter meetings?
Jeff Sullivan
10:30
It kind of feels like every single signing was a 7th or 8th inning righty reliever
And just about every single one of them signed for like $8 million a year
Fairly homogeneous
Manny Machado
10:30
Where do I end up? What's the return like?
Jeff Sullivan
10:31
I've had trouble thinking of the last time a super good player was traded with one remaining year of control. Not a long record of precedent, and I think the return would/will surprise some people for not being as showy as you'd think

If you were the Cubs, would you rather...

...sign Cobb (even at $16-17mm per), keep BP as is now.

...sign Wade Davis, give Montgomery his desire to start, maybe sign another swingman (ie. Liriano)
Jeff Sullivan
10:31
Ehh, just sign Cobb

White sox offer Giolito, Rutherford and Cease for Yelich.  Does that at least get the fish to the table if not complete the deal?
Jeff Sullivan
10:34
I wouldn't want that if I were the Marlins. Giolito is down into the low 90s. He doesn't interest me very much anymore
Billy Beane

So obviously the Angels made this more unlikely, but how close to a wild card team are the A's looking now? Their offense was already quite good last year and is likely to be even better this year, their defense looks much improved... And their pitching has some upside (although with a lot of downside, too).
Jeff Sullivan
10:34
The pitching is a real weakness. With two surprising starters, the A's can work their way to 85 wins or so, but this isn't going to be their season
Billy Eppler
10:35
What should I do at third base?
Jeff Sullivan
10:35
That Josh Harrison rumor is appealing
And/or you could probably get Chase Headley for almost nothing
David
10:35
What do you think of the Fernando Rodney signing?  Is he still a decent closer?  Or do the Twins continue to look for more late inning relief help?
Jeff Sullivan
10:36
He's okay. He has a worse reputation than he deserves, but he's clearly in the lower tier of closers. Twins still need more help on the pitching side

10:36
What is the most you see the Mariners spending on a pitcher?
Jeff Sullivan
10:36
They're practically out of money to spend. So, that much
Watson
10:37
Will Mike Trout return to the playoffs this year?
Jeff Sullivan
10:37
I imagine that, come opening day, the Angels will be my favorite for ALWC2
