Hello friends
Welcome to a somewhat abbreviated Friday baseball chat

Hello, friend!

I'm not the only one who like the Eaton trade for the Nationals, am I?
Jeff Sullivan
9:07
Not at all. It doesn't take a lot to get pushed over the edge. If you believe in WAR and also believe Giolito is kind of overrated, you like the deal. If you think Eaton is just an average hitter and Giolito is about to break out as an ace or a No. 2, you don't like the deal
9:08
I think they paid a big price but Eaton stands to give them more value in the present and future than McCutchen would've. If and assuming Eaton's defense plays in the middle, he's going to be really good for them

As a Mets fan, I feel relatively uninspired by this offseason and by this team. Cheer me up, please?
Jeff Sullivan
9:09
You have a super awesome young power pitching staff and one should think it'll collectively have more health in 2017 than in 2016
9:10
The healthy Mets might have baseball's best rotation. There wasn't a lot they needed to do this winter. They should still dump Bruce and get another reliever but that stuff is fairly uninteresting
Grant
9:10
Regarding young SPs, I often hear of guys having either ace, mid-rotation, or #5 potential. Are there young SPs that have true SP2 profiles out there? Or are they "aces" that don't get all the way there
Jeff Sullivan
9:11
Off the top of my head, maybe McCullers profiles as a No. 2. Great talent, tons of whiffs, but he's always going to be too inefficient to soak up 200+ innings

As a Cubs fan, how do I reconcile my happiness that Dexter Fowler finally got paid with my disappointment that it's with the Cardinals?
Jeff Sullivan
9:11
World Series!
woooooo!!
9:12
Fowler's best years will come at the start of the contract. During those years, the Cubs look the best, so they're likely to still win the division
Outta my way, Gyorkass
9:12
Nats-White Sox Eaton trade: On a gut level, that seemed like a wild overpay from WAS. Am I right about that, or am I severely undervaluing Adam Eaton?
Jeff Sullivan
9:12
Undervaluing Eaton, and probably overvaluing Giolito
9:13
And of course it's not just Eaton's performance. His contract is so absurdly team-friendly. He could be worth more than his remaining commitment in just 2017 alone
Barry from Boston
9:14
Can Pomerantz fetch a decent enough 3B so we don't have to look at Sandoval at all?
Jeff Sullivan
9:14
I wouldn't be shocked if they just made a bench move and gave Sandoval another 2 or 3 months to try to prove himself
Pomeranz does have trade value but not as much as he might if he stays healthy and effective for half of a season
Pearced
9:16
So what should the Jays do now?
Jeff Sullivan
9:16
I think you wait out Encarnacion and Bautista -- the way things have gone, it wouldn't be at all surprising to have one of them return
John
9:18
Any guesses at extensions this offseason?
Jeff Sullivan
9:18
Not my strong suit, I'm afraid. Good Cameron question!
Matt
9:18
Jeff! What do you think about Aaron Nola and his elbow? Tinking about targeting him in a fantasy trade.
Jeff Sullivan
9:19
From everything I've heard from the Phillies, they believe they successfully dodged a bullet. Now, even in the best interpretation, it's still not good to be shot at. But this wasn't PR stuff. Their belief is that Nola should be good to go

9:20
What does it take for the Dodgers to get Dozier? De Leon and what other pieces?
Jeff Sullivan
9:20
Verdugo
Aladdin Sane
9:21
You taking the Fowler or Heyward contract from here? Heyward younger and much better if he fixes, Fowler aging and probably won't repeat 2016 but no-doubt solid.
Jeff Sullivan
9:22
Basically off the top of my head, I still have a slight preference for Heyward. I think he bounces back in a big way and he still has prime years to deliver, whereas Fowler is now into his 30s
Noah
9:23
Any chance Dozier goes to a team other than the Dodgers?
Jeff Sullivan
9:23
I guess there's some slight chance he goes to the Yankees but the Dodgers are easily the best fit and they have a few options to sort through. The Angels have the biggest need but they don't have the resources
Brett W
9:24
Do you see good value for both teams in the Davis-Soler trade?
Jeff Sullivan
9:25
I do. I think I like it more for the Royals and I'm not convinced the Cubs needed to add a closer right now, but Soler was practically out of a job. He had to be moved because his value was going to continue to sink. Davis has the highest upside of any reliever they could acquire
Outta my way, Gyorkass
9:26
Dave liked Milwaukee's return from Boston more than Thornburg. Agree or disagree?
Jeff Sullivan
9:26
In Boston's situation I'd rather have Thornburg, but I really like what the Brewers got. Dubon intrigues the hell out of me after his midseason burst

9:26
With the Cardinals signing Fowler, what are the chances that they go after another FA with a draft pick attached? Someone like Turner or EE?
