You'd need to have spent several years around ballplayers, as some sort of coach, first. If you just inserted a guy with zero experience, he'd never, ever command clubhouse respect

Why can't the Red Sox hit baseballs anymore? Is Ortiz not being in the lineup really that detrimental?
Jeff Sullivan
9:45
It's really just been one bad week. I don't care about one bad week
It's a very good lineup, and the end-of-season numbers are going to reflect that
Pearced

Any idea what happened to the Jays?
Jeff Sullivan
9:47
Lost Encarnacion to another team, lost Donaldson to injury, lost Bautista to age. They're better than this, but there've been some brutal blows to the very core of the roster

Count me among those totally baffled about what to make of Hernan Perez - suddenly last season he's contributing in power and SBs, and now he's walking too?
Jeff Sullivan
9:49
His chase rate is still as bad as ever. I think he's mostly just been facing bad pitching

Are the Mets worse than the Yankees are good?
Jeff Sullivan
9:49
I don't understand a good way to approach this question

It's April. But still, is there something to this Red Sox slump? Pedroia, Bogaerts, Ramirez and Bradley are all slugging .150 (!) less than last year on average. Can that offense survive without power?
Jeff Sullivan
9:50
No, but thankfully, it will hit for power

would you enjoy the game more if molten lava was in foul territory?
Jeff Sullivan
9:50
People would die
No
No I would not enjoy the game more
Just because I like baseball and volcanoes does not mean I would like having the two blended together

What do you think of Harvey so far? His very low K rate is pretty concerning...
Jeff Sullivan
9:51
I'm willing to forgive what he did yesterday since I don't think he was expecting to start in that game, but even before then, he was hittable. I think he's becoming a strike-thrower as opposed to a bat-misser

Will I be sucking up the saves in Arizona after Fernando Rodney finds his quiver empty?
Jeff Sullivan
9:52
Feels like Archie Bradley's thing

Sorry if this has already been discussed but has the new CBA rules regarding draft pick compensation negatively affected trade values? For instance someone like Josh Donaldson could be traded in July and play 1.5 years for his new team and then sign elsewhere for minimal compensation whereas previously they would essentially be trading for Josh Donaldson and a 1st round pick. Seems like it would seriously impact values...
Jeff Sullivan
Donaldson would've meant a pick at the end of the first round. Now he probably means a pick at the end of the first or the second round
9:56
There's an effect, but it's not an enormous one. The end-of-first-round picks are already worth so much less than the top 5

Wow I knew Kahnle looked good but your article opened my eyes. Big trade piece? He throws 100...
Jeff Sullivan
9:56
You naturally have to think about any of these guys as trade pieces but I think it's less fun to focus on that aspect
If Kahnle is still throwing strikes and dealing in July, boom, you have a right-handed Chapman to move
9:57
Incidentally, I know it's an embarrassingly small sample of data, but Kahnle's stuff is obvious and I like the mechanical correction he made. I'm speculating that he's gotten much better

Hey I think the Nationals like hitting at Coors.
Jeff Sullivan
9:57
Surely a trait that is unique to them

9:58
If the Mariners find themselves out of contention before the deadline, which of their veterans could they trade and get positive value from? How much of Cano's contract would they have to eat to find a taker?
Jeff Sullivan
9:58
Pretty much no way Cano would be a midseason deal
I know there's the Tulowitzki counter-example but it's almost impossible to execute
It's...not a good ballclub to try to sell from

Do you think Haniger's unfortunate injury guarantees that Motter continues to play pretty much everyday for the time being?
Jeff Sullivan
9:59
Yeah, he's not getting benched any time soon. Haniger leaves one void, and the other corner is occupied by Guillermo Heredia

How quick does IFFB% stabilize? Specifically worried about Manny Machado, who has an elevated one and decimated batting line to match. Thanks!
Jeff Sullivan
10:00
It takes a while because the denominator is fly balls, which is a fraction of a fraction of all plate appearances. The difference between current Machado and normal Machado to this point has been two pop-ups. Not enough to worry about

can you imagine being a Mets fan?
