While Narduzzi promised Pitt would be a “threat” running the ball in August — which hasn’t been the case — he also wants to win. And if throwing it 40+ times per game gets Pitt to 9 wins by January, I’m sure he’ll be alright with it.

I think the Narduzzi hire has been a home run for Pitt. His enthusiasm and energy were a welcome breath of fresh air intially and now we're seeing the fruits of is recruiting/coaching. Looking at the depth on defense and the evolution of the offense with Whipple it sure seems like Pitt is nicely set up for continued success over the next few years. Do you agree? Is it reasonable to start expecting regular ACC championship game appearances (even if we're just cannon fodder for Clemson)?

“Regular” and “ACC Coastal” are like oil and water. Pitt plays in the the most sporadic division in Power 5 football. But Pitt’s offense has shown flashes, and the other side of the ball is looking like Narduzzi’s ideal defense. At 4-2, things are looking good right now — but a few losses in divisional play can quickly change the tenor of a season.

John - who do you think are the toughest match-ups for Pitt the rest if the way from scheme/strengths/weaknesses.  Miami and NC seem to give Pitt trouble no matter what - thoughts?

Think you’re right in that it’s UNC and Miami. The Hurricanes, even though they don’t have their QB situation settled, throw the ball nearly as much as Pitt, and their defense is solid (despite surrendering 42 to Va Tech). And UNC is always a weird game.

Does Pitt have a realistic chance to win the Coastal this year?

Sure it does. But so does Virginia and Miami.

How good can this team be next year?   I'm excited already.

Too early to tell who Pitt might have to replace on the defensive side of ball (will Ford/Twyman leave early?). But at the very least, it’s fair to get excited about Kenny Pickett in Year 2 with Mark Whipple.
