Johnny McGonigal’s Pitt football chat: 09.23.21

Some commentator (reader) on the PG wrote about how Pitt football went downhill 20 years ago.  Has Pitt football devolved so much that fans ache for the "Glory" years when Walt Harris was coach?  To me, the program hasn't been relevant at all after Jackie Sherrill left in the early 80s.

I was born in ’93, so I can’t tell you what the vibes were like when Jackie Sherrill was running the program in the 80s. But consistent success was there for sure and despite a bright season here and there under Harris and Wannstedt, they never had that consistency. And to be fair, it’s really, really hard to do.

Can you tell me why some of Pitt’s defensive backs have a mouthpiece flapping around their face mask while they clearly have another one in their mouth? Is it part of some Keystone Cops or Benny Hill soundtrack-like  (nod to Ted Lasso) routine??

Honestly, I don’t know. But I appreciate the Ted Lasso-Benny Hill reference. What an episode last week was.

Where's Deslin Alexandre been the last 3 games? Is he hurt or not as good because Pat Jones & Rashad Weaver aren't there to leave him unblocked this year?

Alexandre didn’t play in the opener because he was injured. And he had five tackles and 1.5 TFLs at Tennessee. But he didn’t contribute much in the Western Michigan loss. No one on the defensive line really did.

Why should anyone go to Heinz Field to see a mediocre team playing and losing to other mediocre teams?  Yes, the student section was filled the last two games and I, as a twenty year season ticket holder who actually goes to every home game, was there as well, but who can blame the average fan from staying at home?

I don’t blame anyone for not going. The question was about an on-campus stadium. And as I said, if the product on the field continues to be mediocre, I wouldn’t think an on-campus stadium is the end-all, be-all answer.

I was under the assumption that the Pitt defense was in the top 25.  I understand that PN runs a specific Man defense that does get burnt from time to time and I am okay with that if the offense can match a few big plays.  This past week showed that the offense is capable of moving the ball and putting points on the board and PN fails at making any half time adjustments...ever

Did I think Pitt would get torched by Western Michigan? Absolutely not. But I also didn’t think this defense would be a top 25 unit. They’ve got talented pieces. But it hurts when you have to replace two All-Americans up front and three NFL-caliber players in the secondary. And obviously, it’s still early. Plenty of time to right the ship.

Who do you think will be Pitt's toughest Coastal opponent?  Seems like the Coastal is still wide open with Miami, UNC, and VT (and Pitt) each looking a little shaky.

I’ve been high on Sam Howell for a while — and subsequently I’ve ranked North Carolina a little higher than most of my fellow AP voters — so I’d lean UNC. Miami has been bad, and Virginia Tech (despite beating UNC) isn’t a scary offense. Playing at Lane Stadium, though, will be a tough test for Pitt in a few weeks.

Alright, that was as eventful as I expected. I really appreciate everyone hopping in and dropping their questions. If I didn’t get to yours, DM me on Twitter @jmcgonigal9. Otherwise, have a great weekend and enjoy the sweatshirt weather.
