Johnny McGonigal's Pitt football chat: 12.02.21

Exiled in Atlanta

Actually a non-game related question, sir: In looking through the "records" section of the Pitt media guide, I can't find any mention of the record for most games played. But I'm thinking it's got to be my Central Catholic Vikings brother Cal Admits, right? He's appeared in 62 ages so far, with two more to go. Can't imagine, given the history of eligibility rules, anyone is even close to that. Not bad for a young man who entered as a walk-on.

I tried looking for that when I wrote a feature on Cal earlier this season and couldn't find it. But can't imagine someone playing more. https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/Pitt/2021/08/04/Pitt-football-Cal-...

Win or not won’t Pitt have to address PN’s contract status given the Monopoly Money being thrown around for top college coaches?
Johnny McGonigal
11:53
He’ll be trying to nail down a contract extension. On the flip side, if you’re Heather Lyke, this is why you extended him in 2017: to win an ACC title. Not saying that Pitt *shouldn’t* extend Narduzzi, because I think it should. But he still has three years left on his deal. Not sure if there should be that much urgency.

This is really a stretch for info that probably doesn't currently exist, but have you heard of any rumors of Spencer Rattler transferring to Pitt?
Who is the QB in 2022

If Pitt picks up a transfer qb in the portal, how do you see things playing out in the QB room?
Johnny McGonigal
11:56
I haven’t heard anything but Pitt would be foolish not to look in the portal, at the very least to do its due diligence

pitt will score in bunches, get to QB enough to make difference, and win game.  2 concerns-  1) Syracuse played 3 deep and what looked like 4 deep coverage at times—will Pitt be patient and take what’s available and 2)  dubious penalty calls at critical times against Pitt. — only takes a couple to change an ACC game—not a conspiracy theory but just saying…

If Wake adopts that 3-deep / 4-deep coverage, it’ll be on Pickett to be patient. Maybe they’ll throw a bunch of bubbles to Addison again and move the ball that way. As for the penalties … I just think ACC refs are bad across the board.

Other than Kenny, who's getting drafted this Spring? Mathis, Warren?
Johnny McGonigal
11:59
Mathis and Warren for sure. Off the top of my head (might miss someone) but Lucas Krull is a possibility. He’s got the frame, maybe he tests well. Taysir Mack could also test well. A couple guys who I think should come back and improve their stock are Calijah Kancey and Haba Baldonado. But they’d get drafted if they left.

Is Wake the best offense we will face this year?  What are some keys for success for the Pitt defense side from stopping the RPO?

Do you think Pitt has to score 50 to win this weekend?

I think Wake is the best offense Pitt will face this year, but I don’t think the Panthers have to score 50. I’m predicting Pitt 45, Wake Forest 42. Pickett and Hartman trade shots, but the Panthers’ defense gets a crucial stop or two like it has all season.

All the time we have for today. Thanks as always for all your questions. Should be an entertaining game. Enjoy the weekend, folks.
