Happy All Star Break to you all! I'm fortunate enough to be in Seattle this weekend for the festivities for this traditional first half/second half split. Bunch of questions as per usual, so let's get to it!

H2H Points League: Picked up Gimenez after Jazz and Drury went to IL. How would you prioritize them when healthy? Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:03
Those last two words of your question, right? Jazz / Giménez / Drury.
Beano
12:05
As always, thanks for these chats! NL 10 team 5x5. Do I want to trade Darvish away? Is T O’Neill going to be worth anything? Is Matz going to turn it around? Who do the Rockies trade - and which Rockies will end up with a job? And which AZ OF guys need to be rostered?  I only ask the toughies!
Brent Hershey
12:05
Thanks, Beano; in order:
  • probably not (crazy unlucky strand rate), but his age and the slip makes him worth monitoring
  • Yes, but injury risk isn't going away and he needs a change of scenery
  • Had hopes pre-season; now I'm doubtful
  • It's the Rockies. I have no idea.
  • Carroll and Thomas (for playing time; team obv prefers him in CF)

Hi Brent…..in a 5x5 NL only roto league.I am currently in 5th place in BA ….258 first place is 266….I have an offer of Arraez for CJ Abrams……do I make this trade…..I am in first place in all other hitting categories…..thanks
Brent Hershey
12:06
Yep; sounds right.

Thoughts on Esteury Ruiz as a dynasty player? I know Oakland blows, but I worry he won't hit great and will be another 9th hitter who can't hit
Brent Hershey
12:09
Think he's been better than expected, but I still view him with much more one-year value than a dynasty value. Could have a couple years in this range, but don't think he's an "untouchable" foundation piece or anything.
Bo Knows
12:10
Any snap judgments on Bo Naylor so far?
Brent Hershey
12:10
That 360 CS was a thing of beauty. Not surprised he hasn't hit right away; think it will come but CAs have so much on their plate. More future value than this-year.
Julksy
12:12
At first it seemed Corey Julks was playing way over his head, but last month his skills took a big jump, especially his bb%. Could he be something of a Adolis Garcia where it looks bad under the hood but eventually the skills come to match the output?
Brent Hershey
12:12
I'm coming around on Julks, but not sure there's Adolis upside here. Feel like he is underrated a bit. Big thing for me is that Dusty seems to like him, which goes a long way as far as giving him opportunities. Roto skills are present if he gets a chance.

HQ radio discussed the HOU OF and teased discussing Julks twice, but never actually did.  What can we make of Julks ROS in an AL-only 4x4 Roto format (12 team)?   D. Baker seems to be a wild card in assessing anything.  Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:15
Tag-teaming this from above. Like the skills (power + speed we crave); think he's adjusted well; seems to be getting more lineup opportunities. Downside is still position - he's a COR OF, Tucker obv has one of those locked up. The test will be if he continues to get PT when Alvarez comes back. We'll see. I'd roll w/ him for now.

Where is Manzardo in the updated 50? Any concerns about him long term?
Brent Hershey
12:17
You'll find out <checks schedule> on Wednesday. Yes, I think there's some mild concern.
Baby Face
12:18
Better second half - Joe Ryan or Lucas Giolito
Brent Hershey
12:18
Ryan, as it's tough to know exactly how guys traded mid-season (as I expect with LG) will respond. I believe more in first-quarter Ryan than second-quarter.

AL only 4x4 keeper league.brandish or skubal? thank you!
Brent Hershey
12:20
Skubal ... though if you're also in the mix for anything this year, Bradish is defensible. They're close for me at this point.

When does Soderstrom make his debut in Oakland?
Brent Hershey
12:21
Post trade-deadline would be my guess. All-fields pop (good Futures Game BP session) and is likely to be a plug-and-play guy as the A's play out the string.
Jerry
12:24
Do you think Ledoy Taveras could have a legit breakout season, or is this ride about to end?
Brent Hershey
12:24
Legit. Improved contact rate, and a clear step up in contact quality (Statcast data). Super surrounding cast, great hitters park, and still just 24 years old. Took a while but it's here.
Dill Pickles
12:28
Are you a believer in Reese Olson? Seems like he might get the 5th spot in the nd half.
Brent Hershey
12:28
Really like what I've seen from Olson so far. Throws strikes, ball moves, gets whiffs. No workload concerns the rest of the way. Certainly should be among DET's top 5 SP. Sneaky play for me.
Spahn and Sain, redux
12:35
Brent, do you have any under the radar impact SPs for the second half? Or middle reliever with big innings, great ratios and some vulture wins (think circa 2015 Betances)?
Brent Hershey
12:35
"Impact" makes it really tough. I've got some Olson, Allard, Sears and Lynch that I'm interested in. Maybe even Randy Vasquez? Vulture wins make the reliever picks just about impossible. Start with good teams, scour for skills. Phil Maton, Robert Stephenson, Caleb Ferguson?
Ron
12:37
Hi Brent, thanks for getting us to the break.  (1) Will Matz rejoin and thrive the STL rotation, (2) Will Ottavino close in second half?  (3) Do N. Gonzales and A. Ibanez remain viable in 15-team leagues?
Brent Hershey
12:37
1) Rejoin, yes; I'm dubious of thrive
2) No
3) yes, as useful bench/occasional starter pieces with some upside. Watch lineup trends.

Hi Brent!! I have a quick question for you today.

James Paxton. I'm in "go for it" mode in my h2h dynasty league and have a chance to acquire him at a reasonable price. Should I pull the trigger?

I guess it comes down to whether or not he can last the entire season ..
Brent Hershey
12:38
He's been much better (and more healthy) than I gave him credit for. It's a health risk for sure, but results have been there. I might go for it.

Trying to decide among 3 catchers for dynasty 2-C OBP league: Mitch Garver, Danny Jansen, Tyler Stephenson. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Brent Hershey
12:40
Despite the 1H, Stephenson definitely the call here. Young, emerging team, etc. Other 2 have very limited dynasty value, both due to health. Would probably choose Garver > Jansen right now.

12:43
What backup closers would you try to get now, that could become closers after the trade deadline? Thank You
Brent Hershey
12:43
Seems like there's always a surprise traded CL each deadline, so it's tough. Carlos Hernandez (KC) has been pitching well; Holderman in PIT has better skills than results so far.
John Olerud's Helmet
12:45
What's up with this Lourdes Gurriel this year? Is he good now?
Brent Hershey
12:45
Think it's more in the fact that he played hurt (wrist) last year. Lots of metrics similar to 2021. That said, contact quality has been better, and he's always hit the ball hard. Solid player who many gave up on after 2022.
Drew
12:48
What's a Crow-Armstrong ceiling look like? Seems he's flying below the radar despite big leap in ISO and FB% (and 106 mph liner to start Futures Game). Could he be 30/30?
