Friday chatters, hello! I'm usually on Mondays, but was on vacation earlier this week, so Ray and I flipped spots. Let's get started on this busy summer weekend ...
Phillie Phanatic
12:07
Afternoon - In a 12tm h2h points and I have good pitching (thanks to BHQ) Crochet, H Brown, Schwellenbach, Woo, Gore, Pivetta, Gausman, D. Williams(NYY).  I am holding on to Bibee, Ben Brown, Eury Perez, Taillon.  Would you switch out those last 4 with either Baz, May, Kershaw, Mccullers or Keller who are FA?
Brent Hershey
12:07
Yeah, that's a great staff. Of the last quartet, Taillon would be the one I'd probably look to upgrade (Baz or May). But ... Gausman's inconsistencies are a bit worrisome, too. You can probably afford to keep him, but he's no longer in the auto-start world for me.

You could also just sit tight for now ... great mix of young/older, and a lot of high-skilled guys in that group.

Hi Brent! NL 10 team 5x5. Thoughts on Nick Martinez (he has me worried now) and will W Adames heat up at all?
Brent Hershey
12:13
Martinez - not over worried, but I may have had lower expectations. Skills say this is about who he is -- tricky part, of course, is that he was better in the couple most recent seasons. I just think it's someone you have to manage a bit, careful about employing at home, against good opponents, etc.

Adames - another expectations play. Hit rate, power is down a touch from 2023, which is what should be our baseline. 20ish HR with a questionable BA. I think yes, he could heat up some here as the weather gets warmer, but home park does him no favors. You're probably just holding in an NL-only league at this point.

Good day Brent. Standard 5x5 AL only keeper league. Need starting pitching help. Can you please rank these pitchers from best to worst for the remaining of this year and for 2026. All are salaried at $1. Hancock, Severino, Rocker, Ginn, Fitts and Jacob Lopez. Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:18
Rocker first for sure, but more of a 2026 play. Then
Hancock / Severino / Ginn / Fitts / Lopez

Good Friday, Brent. NL-only, 12-team, dynasty. Cautious Kerkering owner here. His K and BB rates not close to closer-worthy but he's really good at limiting hard contact. Phils need him to take next step, but my guess is that they address the back end through trade. Strahm and Romano are equally "meh". What's your instinct on this one?
Brent Hershey
12:22
More likely than not going to be mix and match for now and yes, they'll address bullpen at deadline. I think the thing to keep in mind that outside of for-sure closer trade, Kerkering is more likely than Strahm or Romano to seize that role over the next few weeks and run with it, given all the possibilities. Romano or Strahm could do that, but I get the sense that Thomson and FO would lean Kerkering if forced to make a choice. But remember ... they're not forced. But best combo of age / stuff / situation here is Kerkering.

What do you expect ROS for Will Warren?
Brent Hershey
12:23
A stretch where the inconsistent outings become less frequent. Don't think he's a full-fledged 'breakout' in the 2H, but takes another half-step. Good stuff from him already, given everything.

12:27
hi Brent, is Mcgreevey for real? Is he currently better than Pallente and Liberratore? Will he be a better fantasy contributor in the second half than currently 60 DL SP like javier, l garcia, j gray, bradish, cavalli, bradford, weathers, montas?
Brent Hershey
12:27
Right now for me, I'd want McGreevy more than Pallante, but he's not at Liberatore's level for the second half. His ceiling is not as high as some rookie starters due to a lower strikeout rate. But he can put the ball where he wants and has been durable so far. And I think we're almost at the point where StL just goes and plugs him into the rotation.

And yes, because all of the pitchers you list contain injury/setback risks, I'd actually prefer McGreevy especially if you are risk-averse.  Would say that Weathers and Montas, though, are the closest for who I might choose over McGreevy.

Is Brenton Doyle a good buy low? The skills look similar to last season.
Brent Hershey
12:31
I'd be a bit wary. While yes, walk and K rates are pretty much the same, several other things underneath do not (BABIP, expected power, HR/F, etc). You throw in the cruddy team context and the fact that I feel he was over his head some in 2024, I'm more likely to stay away unless the price is super cheap.

12 Team H2H (Standard 5x5)

What to do with Adley Rutschman? Metrics look ok -- they have looked ok all year. ABs are getting better - kinda. How much longer do I wait? I waited out Yanier Diaz and he seems to be figuring it out. Carlos Narvaez is on the wire.
Brent Hershey
12:36
In a 12, with Narvaez on the wire, I think you can consider that. In general I'm still an Adley believer ... yet this is working on 12 months where he's not lived up to expectations. I'm probably still holding, knowing that 1H 2024 is in there somewhere, plate skills still strong, expected power (xPX) is up, etc. But can see the case for moving on.

Good afternoon I watched Rogers from Baltimore pitch the other night. He didn’t look that bad. Look like they were kind of squeezing him a little bit. Do you think he stays in the rotation thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:40
Seems like their 6th starter at this point. As long as the rest are healthy and Morton continues at this pace or close to it, likely that Rogers continues to toil at AAA. At some point, BAL will give him that shot, if only b/c he was a target last year in the Norby/Stowers trade. So yes, could see him getting some time in the 2H with BAL.

Hi Brent. In a 5x5 redraft H2H league, I’ve been offered Shane Baz for Mick Abel and Parker Meadows. My outfield is stacked and I don’t really need Meadows, so it’s essentially Abel for Baz. Should I make this deal? Abel has never pitched more than 113 innings in a season, and he’s already at 77 this year, so a late-season shutdown, or at least some skipped starts, seems likely, and Nola’s return looms as a threat to Abel’s  rotation spot.
Brent Hershey
12:46
Hmmm. Careful in framing it with Meadows as a non-factor -- though you don't really need him, it's not like his value goes away. Just don't undersell that piece; he's certainly worth something if one of your other OFers goes down tonight, for instance.

However, remember that Baz has ever pitched more than 92 innings in a season and they've babied his comeback the past several years. More MLB experience, yes, but a longer injury history for sure. I'd prefer either another piece with Baz or a more stable arm.

Carroll has 2 stolen base attempts in last 30 days (1-1) and his SBO is pretty good. He is no longer being deployed as a base thief. Wonder why? Sliding issue, jarring shoulder? What do you think?
Brent Hershey
12:50
Think it's just maturation of the player; he's now hitting rockets and ARI is letting him do that. Maybe it's a body-preservation thing, as you suggest. Feel like that speed game should still be in there, but is a bit odd how much (and how quickly) he's moved to hitting for much more power. Getting to the point where we might be able to curb SB projections down, and if he gets back to that, it's just gravy. Definitely interesting development.

12:54
Shaw and Mayo look terrible to me although I know they are just starting out and trying to adjust to major league pitching. I don't see Shaw as more than a 10-15 homerun type. Mayo looks overmatched. I'm guessing next year he will have a full time opportunity at 1B though.  What do you see long-term for these two? Thanks
Brent Hershey
12:54
Like em both long-term, still. Shaw's first week or so back in MLB, looked like he had figured it out, but obviously still work to do there. Think he still could get to 20 HR, and will have some like-minded SB numbers to add. Mayo is trending towards an all-or-nothing corner slugger. Is it too early to pin a Toglia comp on him? I hope BAL just lets him play the rest of the season to see what they have -- but they've not handled most prospects like that. But yes, no matter what the 2025 outcome, sure seems like that in 2026, he'll get that 1B run.

12:55
brent, in a 12 team H2H points redraft league. Was thinking about cutting bait with Taj Bradley and picking up Charlie Morton. He’s looked better over the last month. ROS thoughts?
Brent Hershey
12:55
I still think Bradley is more likely to have impact fantasy value in 2025 than Morton. But in a 12-team, maybe you run with this. Just be ready to cut bait on Morton quickly.
Porcho Villa
12:56
Better bet for SB only ROS—Stott or X Edwards? Thinking Edwards may be slowed down by his back injury. Sprint speed way down and CS way up.
Brent Hershey
12:56
Would still go X in this case. Having leadoff role helps.
Derrick
12:58
What do you expect from Misioroski and Eury Perez ROS? Are they worth holding in a 12 team mixed with QS instead of W? I have R Olson and Weaver potentially coming off IL soon.
Brent Hershey
12:58
Would probably lean Eury in this case. Miz is likely to have lots of walks, which will limit QS. For this year, Olson > Miz. Weaver tough to eval with the others since he depends on his (and NYY's) save situation.

I am hopeful that kikuchi and berrios have very positive reversion to a strong mean— how about you? And since Estrada blew up for 5 runs in a relief appearance, perhaps got that out of his system and chances are stellar the rest of the way?
Brent Hershey
1:01
Kikuchi/Berrios - both track records should give you hopes of improvement. Kikuchi's walks, though, put WHIP at risk. Estrada -- wish we could think that way. Reality is, we don't really know. Skills remain solid; that's the best we can go on for now. Seems like he'd be the one to step in if Suarez isn't there.
Brent Hershey

Got to all the fantasy questions today; enjoy the weekend! I'll be back chatting at noon again on Monday .... see ya then!
