Back in the Monday chat "saddle" as Ray (hat tip) covered for me last week. Thanks for joining as always; lots to get through ... let's hit it

Hi Brent, NL,5x5 starter replacement: Ben brown, Schwellenbach,Peterson? Thx
Brent Hershey
12:03
All worthy in an NL-only. Would rank em Brown, Peterson, SpencerS -- though probably Peterson is the safest from a job-security standpoint (IE, remaining a starter). For me, BB bigger upside and DP still has that injury shadow.

I'm curious about Luis Rengifo. He's not a big EV guy but seems to have all the metrics HQ loves. In my league (AVG/OBP/SLG/R/RBI/SB), he ranks as a top 35-40 hitter the rest of the way (site projections). Is this a true breakout? Love his position versatility.

Thanks in advance!!
Brent Hershey
12:08
Yep, great summary. Contact gains have stabilized; huge beneficiary of LAA's commitment to SB. Ride it for now; biggest risk is probably his recent penchant for injury. Will be a fun one to re-assess late in the year/offseason. Position versatility like his is huge, too.

Are you ready for some pitching chatter, Brent? =)

How would you rank these pitchers the ROS?

Jack Flaherty
Reynaldo Lopez
Pablo Lopez
George Kirby
Max Scherzer

Bonus Q: Any chance Kopech gets traded and remains the closer??

Appreciate your work!!!!
Brent Hershey
12:11
I am.

I'd go Pablo / Kirby / Flaherty / ReyLo / Max, with a pretty significant gap after that first trio. ReyLo's innings are likely to become an issue later (love everything so far), and while Scherzer's an OK stash, the health/age issue is real.

Bonus: Little chance of that scenario IMO. If he gets moved, it's likely to a contender who is just trying to deepen its pen and the saves go away. If he stays, then more likely that he remains in the closer mix.

Thanks for the kind words!

Morning do you think Joyce becomes the Closer for the LA.Angels
Brent Hershey
12:15
Timeframe is key. IF he's able to maintain his walk-rate gains from the past month in AAA, and IF Estévez continues on this (shaky) path, then perhaps. But to know both, time is gonna need to pass. Barring injury, would be super surprised if this happened in the next month or two.

Good Morning Sir and Happy Monday! This season has been a challenging one between injuries and demotions in my 5x5 10 team dynasty league. Somehow in 4th despite losing Strider, Josh Jung, Triston Casas, Noelvi Marte, Jordan Walker, and Nolan Jones. I’m giving a lot of credit to you and this site. Love the products. I was going to originally ask about dropping Ben Brown to stash Cade Povich which I’m still interested in but more pressing is losing Tork to a demotion. I think I’m going to hold on and see if he can right the ship mostly because the options out there aren’t great and people in my league aren’t ready to trade yet. Could you help me by ranking or at least giving your preference to my waiver wire options: Mark Canha, Michael Busch, Brendan Donovan, Luke Raley, Alec Burleson, Elehuris Montero, Kris Bryant or Mark Vientos I’ve been thinking Raley but would love to hear your opinion.
Brent Hershey
12:19
Congrats on the perseverance! In a 10-teamer, I'm looking for  potential difference makers and current PT ... so that leads me toward Vientos first, then Raley/Burleson. Busch has the difference-making potential, but think PCA is going to steal his AB.

Also, I would hang onto Ben Brown right now instead of Povich. Good luck!

Thoughts on Justin Turner in OBP league? His production has fallen off a cliff recently after a decent start. Worth a hold or washed up?
Brent Hershey
12:20
Everyone goes through ups/downs, but I'm leaning the latter and probably would start looking for an upgrade.

Good morning Brent-Well the first few months of the season are in the books! I am in dire need of saves in the AL-with the upcoming trade deadline where do you see some opportunities? Example: Who would you expect the Red Sox closer in the second half to be assuming they trade Kenley Jansen? Much Appreciated as always-Greg
Brent Hershey
12:24
Semi-interested in Slaten, but hard to know for sure, and not 100% convinced Kenley is moving (though poor performance could always be option with him). TOR could look to add, might be an opening in KC, etc. In an AL-only, might also be prudent to save some FAAB $ for any potential crossovers -- though realize that's a risky game, too.

Are the Tigers giving Malloy a real shot at every day at bats or is this likely a short term or small platoon role kind of thing?
Brent Hershey
12:30
I'm unclear on this, too -- but the Tork demotion does open up some AB. Important to realize, though, that Malloy is a well-below-par defender (really a DH-level guy), so don't kid yourself into thinking DET is going to play him at 3B. He hasn't played an inning there in AAA this year; that should tell you what you need to know. But Greene and Wenceel are the only real fixtures they have in the OF right now, so he could see some decent time there. In 2023-24, has hit RHP better than LHP (he is a RHH), so no natural platoon split. Seems like they should give him a shot between OF/DH.

Do you think Jared Jones and/or Kikuchi will be good ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:31
Yes to both.

12-team NL-only keeper league.  Currently in 4th place due mostly to underperformers such as A. Riley, J. Musgrove, A. Alzolay, D. Bednar among others.  Last place in ERA and 11th in WHIP & K's.  Best case scenario I fear is 3rd place.  Could trade away players and improve keepers for next year.  When do you typically make the decision to go for it or push your chips all-in?
Brent Hershey
12:38
Around now is when I START to consider stuff like this in a keeper lg, and much of it depends on individual players on your current roster. For instance with those you mention above, I see Riley and Bednar as guys you could say have enough current skills and MLB track record to rebound in the final two-thirds of the season. Musgrove (ominous injury situation) and Alzolay (injured, plus little confidence he can regain CL if healthy given that situation) are two that ain't likely to come back — or get to the level you expected on Opening Day. I'd do that exercise with the rest of your roster -- and in light of the category situations you mention.

In some cases, I find it extremely rewarding to, say, 3d place is my ceiling, let's work like crazy to get there. But that also depends on ability to make moves (trades or pickups), and generally knowing your league. No one perfect answer, but hope this helps. Good luck!
Westburg
12:41
Feels like the hq projections for westburg are missing the consistent hard hit rates.   This looks like a 290/25/15 guy to me.  Interesting example of a guy who achieves consistent exit velo with below average swing speed…what are your thoughts?
Brent Hershey
12:41
I've been a big Westburg fan since watching him (live) a bunch in the minors. Now that we have more data, and the fact that one of his attributes was plus-instincts, he can be a guy where projections underrate a bit early on in his career. Not sure about .290, but that HR/SB projection is reachable in 2024 IMO.

Hou Abreu or Cle C. Smith, which one becomes closer first
Brent Hershey
12:44
Assuming neither is not a valid answer?

On their current teams, really depends which of Hader or Clase gets injured first. Even though Abreu has track record, there seem to be less options in CLE if Clase somehow cedes the job.

Any thoughts on why Det went with Malloy over Jung since Det has 3B needs?
Brent Hershey
12:47
Says to me they don't feel Jung is ready. Higher upside guy, learning a new position. While batting stats looks great, check out that "errors" column this year as a 3Bman. 9 so far seems like a lot. That's probably a big part of the answer.

Dropped Mize yesterday after the Boston start, in part for performance, in part for roster reasons. Surprised to see his *relatively* strong BPV and HQ indicators given his performance. Should I be watching closely to pick him back up if I can?
Brent Hershey
12:49
League context (other options) matters ... but yes, he's had a rougher May but pedigree says to monitor, especially as he gets further and further away from the injury. Young enough to still surprise in 2H -- not a given, but something to keep an eye on. Should get a legit shot in DET.

Howdy Brent!   In NL roto 4x4 12 team,    I have the Wicks and Bobby Miller on the IL hopefully back soon and Hurston Waldrep HOPEFULLY making roads to a 2024 debut.  I'm trying to be as strategic as possible when releasing pitchers to make room.     I have Bender, Wandy Peralta and Reed Garrett as my initial thoughts, but i need both wins/saves as well as the ERA and Whip to consider.  Is Wicks someone that i should just stash until i'm forced to activate him?  What i'm asking, essentially, is if you had those three SP on reserve, would you drop the 3 relievers for them?
Brent Hershey
12:52
If I'm understanding correctly, I'd drop Bender and Peralta for sure. Would hang onto Garrett for as long as I could just in case he grabs some saves in NY. Excited about Waldrep's AAA debut for sure.

Hi! 12-tm. H2H category … w IL returnees, need to drop two of Hunter Brown, Nestor Cortez, Reese Olson, Gavin Stone! Please rank and any comment! Thanks!

Rough ... Olson and Cortes, I guess?

Losing Casas and N. Jones has forced me to play the 1B streaming game, and it's been slim pickings out there. Do any of these options stand out over the medium term, or am I stuck in week to week mode (5x5 OBP): Bell, Candelario, France, Burger, E. Montero, Meneses?
Brent Hershey
12:55
I'd want Burger over the rest pretty easily; he could become keepable
