Closing Time

A couple of late auction draft grabs - Uceta & Tinoco.  Do you find any value in both as potential closer candidates?  Thanks!
Justin Mason
12:01
I think Tinoco is the better grab late. I do think Uceta could be next man up but I don't know how long we will be able to wait on him for that and you will likely have to drop him before you can cash in on that.

What, in your opinion, is the best projection system for playing time?
Justin Mason
12:03
FanGraphs depth charts, but personally I think doing your own playing time within whatever projection system you prefer is the way to go. There are just too many things that most projections miss with playing time and growth

Hi Justin, In 5x5 h2h, do I want Varsho or Nootbar and Soroka or D. Peterson? Thank you!
Justin Mason
12:03
Nootbaar and Soroka
Honkus Wagner
12:03
Do you think Spencer Torkelson carves out a role with the Tigers for the season? or do they look to trade him to Arizona or Seattle at some point
Justin Mason
12:04
I think that with the early injuries in Detroit, Torkelson has a role and if he can hit, then he should keep it.
Adenolith
12:04
Not a question but our slow draft has started and I'm pumped about my start. $300 budget, 8 teams, got Vlad Jr. -34, J-Ram - 51, Gunnar - 36, and Carroll - 41.
Justin Mason
12:04
Love that start in a league that shallow
Detroit Rock City
12:04
I wasn’t leaving the draft without Jackson Jobe which is sometimes a costly predicament.  Tell me he’ll prove worth the money spent on draft day???
Justin Mason
12:04
I think he will but you will have to hold until he is up.
Catcher
12:05
13 team auction draft, NL only. How would you value Jacob Stallings? Think he gets moved mid-year?
cool 1
Justin Mason
12:05
The Rockies haven't been an active team at the deadline the last few years so I could see them holding him for the whole season. He should have a decent amount of value in an NL only because he will volume
TB Teddy
12:05
Thoughts on D.Rasmussen?  Added him late due to his dual eligibility (SP/RP).  Will his prove valuable from the get go??
Justin Mason
12:06
I think he will. He may not start much early on as the schedule could be a bit more spread out, but I think he is a very affordable SP and in leagues with that RP eligibility, he is a sneaky good add.

5x5 Roto is dropping down from 10 to 9 teams this year. Should my auction strategy shift be to pay up for more stars and accept more high-potential injury risk guys?
Justin Mason
12:07
Absolutely. When you have a shallower league, I tend to go more stars and scrubs because of the replacement value on the wire. Take more gambles and shoot for upside. Volume guys still have their value, but a lot of them can be grabbed off of the wire.

12:08
Middle relief value - drafted both Justin Slaten & Cade Smith.  I feel both could be sneaky save options possibly???  If not, ratios are good enough to prove rosterable in 10-team league?
Justin Mason
12:09
With Hendriks' struggles in spring, I think Slaten is a really good option if they don't want to go with Chapman. Smith has a lot of talent, but I just don't see how he supplants Clase.

12:09
Any 'best shape of his life' or 'added a new pitch' stories that you're buying this year?
Justin Mason
12:10
I never really buy into the best shape of his life BS. Love to see guys adding new pitches as long as their are actually using them in spring. Buying into Cristopher Sanchez and Max Meyer for sure. A bit into Pfaadt, but all three of those guys are pitchers I liked before so it may just be confirmation bias.

Keep 2(5 OF spots): Carroll, Henderson, Alvarez?  Henderson's injury worrying me
Justin Mason
12:12
Carroll and Henderson. I dropped Gunnar a little bit but this doesn't sound serious

Hola Justin, keeper Q for you (10T roto 5x5 with OBP and an auction draft with a $260 budget): I'm keeping Ohtani (hitter) for $49 but have three more slots to fill. Would you keep any of Cal Raleigh ($6), Triston Casas ($14), Jared Jones ($6), Carlos Rodon ($8), Bailey Ober ($11), Ryan Walker ($6) or Emmanuel Clase ($14)? Thanks!
Justin Mason
12:13
Ober, Raleigh, Clase

My NL only roto league currently utilizes Wins, Saves, ERA, WHIP, Total K's, and Innings Pitched as the pitching categories.  The league replaced K/9 and K/BB with Total K's and IP two years ago.  We like total K's as a category but IP is a cheap category that heavily favors starters and pretty much made middle relievers useless.  Do you have any recommendations to replace IP while keeping the other five?
Justin Mason
12:14
I honestly don't because I no longer play in a lot of leagues like this.

12:15
Am I crazy going in with Caminaro as my starting 3B in a 10-man points league? Or do I need a pretty decent backup.
Justin Mason
12:15
I don't think so because he should be great and there is plenty on the wire in a 10-team league

League rule question...

In my keeper league a players eligibility for this season is based on games played there the previous year.  Under those rules Othani isn't pitcher eligible.   The Othani owner is obviously complaining that he should be eligible immediately because he didn't pitch last year due to injury and having to wait the 8 games for him to get eligibility is harsh.  I see both side on this.   Where do you stand?
Justin Mason
12:16
Rules are rules. He didn't pitch last season so he needs to gain the eligibility in season. This is the same for a hitter like that misses time and loses an eligibility at a different position too.
Mochi
12:16
is Simpson going to be blocked by DeLuca for a bit until he basically proves he's not good enough?
Justin Mason
12:17
pretty much. I think Deluca will hold him off until there is an injury

Collective amnesia about Jackson Holliday's super prospectdom? How else was I able to snag him - unkept - at $6 in my keeper league?
Justin Mason
12:17
No idea but that is an amazing price to gamble on
12:18
the fantasy community hates prospects that struggle in their first go around. I remember getting Trout off of waivers after his demotion in his first year and loving that I had him for three years at a cheap price in an AL Only

10 team mixed H2H pts league. Lineup's are 3 OF, 1 DH, No CI/MI, 3 SP, 2RP. Keep up 5 forever. Options: Skubal, Burnes, Kirby, JRod, Churio, Altuve, Devers, Yainer Diaz, Merrill. Skubal/Burnes/Devers/Altuve and . . .? Usually I'll punt C and OF, and go heavy SP, but with Kirby injury now thinking JRod or Churio with those other 4. A little help?
Justin Mason
12:19
Skubal, Chourio, JRod, Merrill, Burnes for me.
