Hi everybody. World Series starts tomorrow, the off-season approaches, all that good stuff. Let's chat.

Oliver Marmol was a teammate with Brett Gardner on the 2005 College of Charleston Cougars baseball team. How about that?
Kevin Goldstein
12:01
He's younger than Waiwright and Molina. He was selected in the same round, same year of the MLB Draft as Anthony Rizzo and Ryan Brasier. Good for him, hope he does well.

Do agents ever initiate or get involved in trade discussions for their clients?
Kevin Goldstein
12:03
Not without permission. They sometimes request trades, but the team is under no obligation  to honor such requests. The only time they do that is for minor league FAs who have outs in their deal and they look for an opportunity with another club ...

What was wrong with me in game 5?
Kevin Goldstein
12:04
The playoffs are hard. The Dodgers lineup is really good.

Kevin: Aaron Boone gets a lot of hate from Yankees fans (I think he's solid).  Question: how do teams evaluate managers?  Obviously they watch the games and have a sense of how the in-game stuff works/doesn't, but are there other elements (interviews with players, ability to work with analytics department, etc.) that are used?
Kevin Goldstein
12:05
Yeah, I think it's nearly impossible to evaluate a manager from the outside. The most important part of a manager's job is getting the best possible performance from his players. Any number of factors go into that equation that we can't see from our vantage point.

Could Josh Donaldson bring anything of value back to the Twins (assuming they pick up some of his contract)?
Kevin Goldstein
12:06
He's owed $50 million for the next two years, so they'd have to pick up a lot of the contract. It's feasible, but won't be easy.

Given that Arizona is 2-3 years out from being competitive would it make sense for them to shop Marte to restock their farm and given his very reasonable contract what sort of package would it take to get him?
Kevin Goldstein
12:07
I think it's certainly something they should be listening on.
Reginald
12:07
Is there any worry about the level of competition Colton Cowser faced or is he legit?
Kevin Goldstein
12:07
Legit.

12:08
What types of pitchers do you think the Cubs attempt to bring in to stabilize the rotation for 2022?
Kevin Goldstein
12:08
I doubt they'll play at the top of the market. Likely just solid guys to give them innings and maybe be trade targets come July.
Krontz
12:08
Robo-ump strike zone 2023 .... likely or too soon?
Kevin Goldstein
12:09
I think it will take longer than that. The tech just isn't ready for prime time.
A big dumb idiot
12:09
There is Succession level drama going on at the top of the telecom that owns the Blue Jays. It's salacious but theyre in no danger of going under or anything, but their failson chairman is at the centre of it. Do you think any free agents would care about this as long as the $$ is there?
Kevin Goldstein
12:09
Not a bit.
Bob
12:09
What, if anything, does it tell you that Jed Hoyer went outside the Theo/Boston/Chicago tree for the front office additions of Carter Hawkins and Ehsan Bokhari last week?
Kevin Goldstein
12:10
I think it tells you that he's interested in bringing on some different perspectives, and that's a good thing. I don't know Hawkins, but have heard really good things about his PD chops. I know Ehsan and he's great, and also a wonderful human being. I couldn't be happier for him.

Posnanski's new tome is on hold for me at the STL City Library. How excited should I be?
Kevin Goldstein
12:10
I don't know. Like what you like, so get excited.

Given the recent comments by Dipoto what do you think the chances are of Julio Rodriguez breaking camp with Seattle next spring?
Kevin Goldstein
12:11
I'd bet against it.

Is there any benefit to altering how traditional starters are aligned (1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3 . . .)? Say maybe have your 3 vs their 1, 4 vs their 2, 5 vs their 3, 1 vs their 4, and 2 vs their 5?
Kevin Goldstein
12:12
Not really. You can try that stuff, but it gets out of whack real quick. Somebody misses a start or gets pushed back a day. It's impossible to do.

12:12
What will be the biggest hurdle in the CBA talks?
Kevin Goldstein
12:12
Money, right? More specifically arbitration and free agency timing.
Fred whitfield
12:14
Do you expect a lot of trades before the rule 5 draft as teams  like Tampa /Cleveland try  to get  a return for those players who might have to be exposed. Any other teams you expect to be active?
Kevin Goldstein
12:14
I do expect those teams to be busy heading into roster freezes. Yankees as well, but they did a lot at the deadline to handle their crunch.

I know every situation is going to depend on who the pitcher is, but do you have any broad framework for when you think it's a good idea to use a starter in relief on a throw day? I'm not trying to center this on the Dodgers, but as an example/barometer, if you have someone the caliber of a rested Joe Kelly available, is it ever a good idea to throw the starter instead, outside of maybe an extremely leveraged World Series inning?
Kevin Goldstein
12:15
I'm not a fan of doing it, except in exceptional circumstances, and I personally think that many of the Dodgers uses of their starters in the playoffs this year we're not exceptional circumstances.

12:16
What do you make of the velo uptick for Luis Garcia in his last start?  Not expecting 97+ to stick, but could we see a velo uptick next year that helps the FB play up a bit more?  Or was this just a playoff adrenaline thing?
Kevin Goldstein
12:16
It's one of those things where we will find out together. I think he knew (or was told) that he was not going deep so he just went all out from pitch one.
J.L.
12:16
Do you see the Cubs trying to re-sign any of the trio Báez, Bryant and Rizzo? Should they?
Kevin Goldstein
12:17
No; probably not.

How do you think the Astros will handle the outfield at Atlanta? They can't possibly keep Yordan out of the lineup can they?
