uh, what the heck are the Nationals doing?  Just sorta trying to middle through to....? I am perplexed.
Kevin Goldstein
12:14
You and me both.

Odds that Greene and Tork both break camp with Tigers? Is there a sense around the industry that the new compensation for bringing up prospects is going to work as intended?
Kevin Goldstein
12:15
There's isn't really a sense yet. I don't think we'll really know until opening day if teams are loosening up in this regard.

Hey Cardinals...you guys do not have a dh or a ss and Kyle Schwarber and Trevor story are sitting out so maybe ah f* it whatever...Drew VerHagen and Nick Wittgren are enough. This whole 12 team playoff opens up a world of possibilities for your strategy of low impact pick ups.
Kevin Goldstein
12:15
I don't see how signing a couple of cheaper relievers keeps them out of still doing something big. Nothing to be upset about on March 14.

Of the 4 AL East teams to win 90 plus games last season, which team is most likely to take a back.
Kevin Goldstein
12:16
Unpopular opinion: The Rays.

It had been reported that Derek Jeter had a 4% ownership stake in The Marlins. What happened to that when he resigned? Did he cash out? Or is he still a part owner? Or does he just lose that $$$?
Kevin Goldstein
12:17
He sold his stake.

Teams have to create more than just a binary "swing at pitches outside the zone" (e.g. O-Swing%) metric when evaluating hitters, right? I would think accounting for pitch type (fastball, slider, changeup, etc.) and location of pitch they chase would be more predictive of future value and better for development. Right? Growing up I remember Shawon Dunston striking out on a slider in the dirt 1,235 times, so I can't help but think this metric would have helped back then.
Kevin Goldstein
12:17
Teams don't have to create this. They already have.

Any guess as to who starts the most games at catcher for the Yankees this year?
Kevin Goldstein
12:18
I might take the field.

The baseball IQ and simple defensive fundamentals in D1 baseball seem a bit rough for the corner players. Are we at the point where we're optimizing for power bats and arms at the expense of in-game play-making/knowledge at the high amateur levels?
Kevin Goldstein
12:19
I don't think so. D1 baseball is incredibly far from the majors, so you need to adjust your bar.
Jacob
12:19
Woohoo! We have a new CBA!
Kevin Goldstein
12:19
No kidding. I was very happy to see baseball back, and I hope everyone else is as well.
Jacob
12:19
Do you stay in contact with people in front offices regarding free agents/trades or just prospect stuff?
Kevin Goldstein
12:20
All of that stuff, but I am not in the news-breaking business. I like that to others.
Beignet and the Jets

It's the time of the season for backfield "buzz" on teams' youngest prospects. I saw the Bleis writeup last week on the Red Sox list. Any other prospects immediately spring to mind as impressing evaluators enough to shoot up boards?
Kevin Goldstein
12:20
Peter Crow-Armstrong making some buzz in Cubs camp.
Jacob
12:22
Did anything surprise you about the CBA?
Kevin Goldstein
12:22
Not really.
I expected some clawbacks by the union, and mission accomplished. I certainly didn't expect some kind of structural sea change.

How many words is a typical scouting report?
Kevin Goldstein
12:23
Team to team. Some are just very score based. I really like well written reports. Tell a story. Paint a picture. Use your words.

Follow on team shirts for FO: What sort of mementos (ring aside) from your Houston stint did you keep?
Kevin Goldstein
12:23
Most of it's in a box. I have an altoids tin with mound dirt from Dodgers stadium after game 7.
Andrew
12:24
When you see a guy (like Kikuchi you mentioned earlier) and think some pitch usage changes would help him, do you consider what team he's on and whether their staff would've tried that?
Kevin Goldstein
12:24
Oh absolutely. You do your work and you definitely learn that some players are more open to changing than others.
Teddy
12:24
During your time in Houston, did you ever push hard to acquire a player that eventually went somewhere else and performed really well? Performed badly? Does that affect your reputation / trust within the org?
Kevin Goldstein
12:25
Yes; yes; not really. Everybody gets players right and wrong, it's more about total score.
Beignet and the Jets
12:25
I know Donaldson arrived clean-shaven, but what's your best guess of what would happen if a player with facial hair gets traded to the Yankees and just says "no thank you" to their antiquated personal appearance code? The Yanks couldn't seriously take any action against a player who had no say in going to play for them, right?
Kevin Goldstein
12:26
Oh my good friend, you've entered one of my most favorite things to speculate. Super hairy long-beard guy with a 7-10 WAR tells the Yankees he'll take their offer, but he's not shaving. What happens? I'd love to know myself.
John
12:26
Another Tatis Injury.  Yikes!
Kevin Goldstein
12:27
Yeah, this really stinks. One of the most exciting players in the game and the game is better when he's playing.

Pizza pie or dessert pie?  Cooked fruit pie or cream pie?  Pie or pi?
Kevin Goldstein
12:27
Pizza; cream; pi. I'm more of a cookie/cake guy when it comes to dessert.

I'd like to see Greinke in DET, do you think there is much of a connection with Hinch and him for that to mean anything?
