Run 'em out!

Do you think a team will sign Pujols to a 1 year deal and give him a chance to reach 700 HRs?
Kevin Goldstein
11:14
If he wants to play, he'll get a chance to, but hard to see him getting 21 home runs just hitting against lefties.
Luis
11:14
Would teams take a guy who could throw a complete game every time with a 5.50 ERA?
Kevin Goldstein
11:14
Nah.
11:15
I wonder what the line is . . . . 4.50? Can you guarantee the 5.50 is done by 5 or 6 every time?
Dave
11:15
What are your impressions of Baz's first week in the big leagues?
Kevin Goldstein
11:15
He looks like a future impact starter to me.

What do you think of the plan to split the Rays between Montreal and Tampa Bay? Do you think the recent experience of the Blue Jays served as a proof-of-concept for the plan (though not intentionally so)?
Kevin Goldstein
11:17
Either play in Tampa or play in Montreal. I don't care which to be honest, but play in one. It's not a hot take, and I don't have a strong opinion here. It's my preference, but I'm kind of whatever about the whole thing. More interested in if the FO has to go live and work in Montreal for three months a year and what a pain that would be.

Can Adam Duvall play center field? Joc Peterson?
Kevin Goldstein
11:17
Not in any way you would want to see....

Do you think the Red Sox are able to take the division next year with some good offseason transactions? None of the four AL East contenders seem like they're going to lie down and rebuild, so do you think Chaim continues retooling with low key pickups or tries to build a championship team now?
Kevin Goldstein
11:18
I mean . . . they're not operating in a vacuum. The Yankees and Blue Jays will make big moves too, and the Rays will keep . . . doing whatever the hell they do.

Hi Kevin - thanks for chatting! You were an early believer that the Mariners were "sneaky good" - it seems next year they could take a step back due to their run differential, but also potentially some of their young players and prospects could improve - how do you see their 2022 going?
Kevin Goldstein
11:18
I think the baseline is sneaky good again, with some upside if they have a good offseason.

Austin Martin going to figure the power out? something like .300/.400/.400 slash?
Kevin Goldstein
11:19
The EVs suggest that he's not a big power source.

The Brewers are locked into their playoff position (NL #2 seed) with a week to go. Is it a meaningful advantage to be able to rest guys at the end of the season, or is it overblown?
Kevin Goldstein
11:20
It's a VERY meaningful advantage, especially this year. Guys are way more gassed than ever due to 2020's weirdness.

11:20
is Bailey ober a starting pitcher? #5, or swingman?
Kevin Goldstein
11:20
I think he could be a back-end guy.
DJ
11:20
Do you think the A's are likely to begin a rebuild this off-season?
Kevin Goldstein
11:20
I have no idea. A lot is going to depend on the location situation.

Re: Evaluating catchers. To what extent do teams rely on input from their pitchers for this?
Kevin Goldstein
11:21
Quite a bit. Pitching coaches too.
Oren
11:21
When a player like Eugenio Suarez badly struggles, does a team send him into the offseason with specific things to work on? Do coaches keep in touch during those months? Or are players responsible for their own changes?
Kevin Goldstein
11:21
Yes and yes. Players who have good years get things to work on as well.

Simple question: why is nobody talking about Luis Robert? He missed a huge chunk of the year, but he has been OPS-ing 1.021 in the 37 games since he came back and .946 overall. He just turned 24 at the beginning of August and he is already a beast. Hopefully, they can play long enough in the postseason for people to see what an exciting talented player he is.
Kevin Goldstein
11:22
I don't really know about the not talking about part, but yeah, dude is a superstar.
Cole
11:22
If you ran a young team targeting 2023 for realistic contention, would you be interested in a trade for Glasnow? Or does trading for a 1-year guy who just got TJ seem a bit risky
Kevin Goldstein
11:22
I'd be interested.

How does one become an evalutaion analyst
Kevin Goldstein

Understand baseball, have a good feel. Have eyes the work. Understand underlying data.

How much information can and do clubs disclose on player injuries?is this mandated by mlb or is every club free to disclose what they want?
Kevin Goldstein
11:23
You can't hide ANYTHING when exchanging medicals.

Who do you think the Mets will hire as PoBO?  And hypothetically, if you were the GM what would be your strategy for fixing the team?
Kevin Goldstein
11:25
I think they'll definitely go after Theo with an ownership stake. We will see if it works. I think they need a total restructure and tighten things up internally in order to operate like a big market team.

I recall you mentioning that it’s not uncommon for unconventional ideas to be thrown out in FO meetings - on a scale “from let’s work him out there for a couple months and see how it goes” to getting laughed out of the room, what would you have said if someone recommended trying Ke Hayes at SS last off-season? Pirates having a pretty blank rebuild slate, and they knew what they had in Newman at that point.
Kevin Goldstein
11:26
I would be skeptical, but I wouldn't laugh it out of the room. That's one of those things when in February, during spring training, you find a quiet backfield, hit some grounders to him there and see what it looks like.
