It seems people in the Padres organization really like Buddy Reed, but he doesn't get any traction on your lists. Curious as to your thoughts on him.

Still not sure he hits enough. But there's raw power and speed/defense. And he's good a hockey!
(standing by for Peter Gammons tweet about Reed)

Do you see Josh Jung as a top 100 guy for next year?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:34
Looks like it. Sneaky good at 3B given his frame/long speed make you think he wouldn't be. Classic example of a possible pro swing change guy (like Alec Bohm) since there's hitability and raw, but very flat path

Early predictions for the ROY winners?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:36
Vlad and Senzel/Robles were the leaders for me here: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2019-impact-prospects/
I'll make prediciton with the staff before the season starts. I picked Andujar over Ohtani last year and was probably onto something, but also was wrong

There weren't any A's on the "Picks to Click" list. Even if you don't see them making the 2020 top 100, who do you think will be their biggest riser in the next year?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:37
Austin Beck is the one the watch but Lazaro Armenteros, Jeremy Eierman and Jameson Hannah are all on there too

Are you as surprised as most fans that the Braves haven't made a legit prospect trade yet? Always envisioned some of the stock pile of pitching prospects as trade currency.
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:38
I bet they make one during the season if they're anywhere near contention
HugoZ
1:38
If they're not going to do anything else, wouldn't it be useful for the Braves to sign Kimbrel on a short-term deal? It's not like the money will roll over into the following seasons.
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:38
Yeah it kinda does. Like it's money, not minutes on your boost mobile phone

% likelihood Julio Rodriguez (sea) has eventual 4-5WAR upside. Thanks!
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:39
hold on, gonna do this like the odds for the top 100 list
1:40
Over 50% of bust, call it 11% chance of 5+ WAR multiple times

If Vlad was exactly 4 years older at each level, would you still have him at #1? Is 70/70 just undeniable no matter what?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:41
Nope more like 50, maybe 55
I mean Nate Lowe kinda did that
Nathaniel Lowe for the linker

Kiley, do you get information on intangibles, attitude, personality from asking interview questions of players? Or are those documented in scouting reports that you would get from teams, coaches, other scouts?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:43
We talk to players but not that many. Usually easier to ask scouts we trust

Kiley wrapping up a call: who hangs up?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:44
I have been chastised by family members for saying bye and hanging up before they say bye but I'm working on that but also i think they're too sensitive I mean the call was over what do you want a hug get over it

Any highlights or unexpected players that popped for you from D1 opening weekend?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:44
Yes! some of them are covered right here: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/our-week-1-college-scouting-notes/

Any funny stories about confusion between your dog being named scout and your occupation as a scout?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:46
Girls especially roll their eyes until I mention that I also considered the character from To Kill a Mockingbird since my pupper is very tomboyish. Scout has already scouted a game and got universal good girl reviews from the scouts there and she's joined me for lunch with a few scouts so that was probably a confusing sentence

How does Antonio Cabello's polish compare to Juan Soto's or other prospects who developed. I heard someone say it was equal. Do you think he can move that quickly through the minors?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:47
Well Soto developed polish between his verbal deal and the GCL, so most scouts didn't see it and his body also changed a good bit, so the tools changed, too. Cabello wasn't a consensus top guy in his class because he was already maxed-out
1:48
Soto was a good hitter with tools and got $1.5 million, but nobody scouting him as an amatuer thought this was remotely on the table
1:49
in fact I saw him and Fernando Tatis at an amateur event and neither really stood out, same for 6'0 Oneil Cruz. Here's the video of Soto:

Assuming Rutschman is a slam dunk #1 in June, if you were drafting #2, who would you take right now out of Witt Jr, Vaughn,  Langeliers, Abrams, or other?
AvatarKiley McDaniel

More on this later this week! One of those guys looked much better than expected last week
